Milliner/McDougle Status?

The Jets on Friday open up their three-day rookie minicamp — for their six drafted players, plus a collection of undrafted free agents who they signed, and some tryout players.

Two years ago, offensive guard Brian Winters was an arriving rookie, as a third-round draft pick. Last year, cornerback Dexter McDougle was in the same position, having being picked by the Jets in Round 3.

Now, both players are recovering from season-ending knee injuries. During last week's three-day voluntary veteran minicamp, Winters and McDougle both offered updates on their rehabilitation processes.

It is unclear when they will return to 100 percent participation in practice, but they are targeting training camp, which begins in late July.

Before then, the Jets have organized team activities (spread out from May 19 to June 5) and a mandatory minicamp, from June 9-11. Winters and McDougle aren't sure if they will be ready to participate in any of those practice sessions.

Winters became the Jets' starting left guard as a rookie. He struggled mightily. Last season, in the Jets' sixth game, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, ending his season. (McDougle sustained the same injury, in the same knee, during training camp, ending his rookie season before it could even begin.)

Winters said last week that he is feeling "real good." He did his usual offseason training in Arizona. Lately, he has been working with the Jets' trainer, John Mellody, at the team's facility. Winters was able to do some drills during the voluntary veteran minicamp, but sat out during offense-versus-defense team periods.

So what percentage of health is his knee at?

"I couldn't really put a number on it," Winters said. "But it's starting to feel really good. They just want me to be healthy come [training] camp."

Winters said he will "most likely not" do anything during the mandatory minicamp in June, "but [the trainers] said they'll play it by ear, and play it safe." Winters said he has experienced "no setbacks" in his recovery and that he is "ahead of schedule."

Once training camp rolls around, Winters will compete with Willie Colon and Oday Aboushi for one of the Jets' starting guard spots. Free agent acquisition James Carpenter will occupy the other starting spot.

McDougle said he thinks he is "getting pretty close" to 100 percent. He has also been doing individual/positional drills "without any restrictions," though no team period work.

Like Winters, McDougle said he is right on schedule, "if not ahead," with his rehab. McDougle said he "definitely" will be ready for training camp, but isn't sure about his potential participation level in the June minicamp.

"I feel great, though," he said. "If [the trainers] told me I could go out now, I definitely wouldn't hold back. But it's up to them right now."

McDougle has to be itching to play again. During his senior season at Maryland, in 2013, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in just the third game — after picking off two passes in that game, at Connecticut.

After cornerback Dimitri Patterson went AWOL for a preseason game last year and was cut, the Jets could have used McDougle. But he was already done for the season by that point. Now that the Jets have signed corners Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, McDougle and third-year pro Dee Milliner (coming off a season-ending torn Achilles tendon) likely will occupy backup roles this season.

NFL Draft 2015: Darryl Slater's grades for all of the Jets' picks
McDougle is excited about the chance to learn from Revis and Cromartie. McDougle is also looking forward to seeing the impact those corners have on the Jets' secondary, which sputtered last season while comprising far less talented players.

"You can definitely learn a lot from those guys," McDougle said of Revis and Cromartie. "It's real good for me, personally. I can only learn from them and get better. You look at those guys, their résumés speak for themselves. They bring that leadership into that [defensive backs meeting] room. You want to play with guys like that. You want to learn from guys like that. You want to be sitting in the room with some of the best to ever play the game. We can only get better from that."

Two injured bums in a pod. Sorry, but I can't resist. Milliner has been a huge disappointment that is constantly injured. He has literally had ONE good game and then he's injured for the foreseeable future. It's happened again and again.

McDougle? Who even knows what to expect from him? The guy has never played even one professional game.

Your statement about Milliner is incorrect... he played well the last moth of his rookie season and got named NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Month for December 2013. he covered the #1 reciever for the four teams they played but don't let facts get in the way of you opinion.

The most important ability for NFL players is availability, and these guys don't have it. China dolls are pretty on a shelf but useless in a NFL game...

Milliner played 13 games as a rookie and blew an Achilles year. He also was AFC player of the month as a rookie.

Let's just write him off. He sucks.

I guess Dante Fowler should now be called injury-prone because he's going to miss the entire year.

I feel like in this situation, both you guys are wrong because you guys are taking your case too far. Milliner has talent, sure. But he had numerous surgeries in college, tor his achilles and constantly was hurt in training camp the last few years. I thnk Rex even said that he wasn't in good enough shape. McDougle now hasn't played a game in almost two full years. How can you get better if you aren't playing football? I am hoping they succeed, but I think both are really far from a sure thing.

If Milliner comes back healthy, I wonder if they will play him over Skrine? Skrine has the big contract, but he can't be nearly as good a corner as a healthy Milliner. Will be interesting to see

And what about the injury where he missed time prior to the Achilles that shelved him last season? What about when he was drafted he was injured and needed to rehab that injury? And what about all the time he missed getting benched during his rookie season because he was such a liability?

Most of you dingbats have every excuse under the sun to avoid having to take your green glasses off.

In two seasons, this guy has rarely if ever seen the field and that is a FACT.

Stroke the retard all you would like but as of this moment, this turd is a colossal BUST.

Please spare the "Dingbats" of this board your insulting diatribe and make football points. No one wants to listen to the rest of the drivel.

Actually, Milliner had a reputation for playing through a few injuries at Alabama. And he sprained an ankle that cost him a few preseason games. He was benched for a few games in his rookie year after getting thrown into the fire as a rookie, hardly cause for such vitriol from the likes of a scathing critic like yourself. His injury last season was a torn Achilles, a tough luck injury more than any "injury-prone" label. These aren't excuses. They're facts.

By the way, thanks for the name-calling response. Glad we could keep it grown up around here.

I started this thread and I did it to legitimately get some info. Not sure why I'm taking a hit.
Don't see anybody hitting you. The only one getting hit is our resident SOJF from New England who determined, based on nothing that both are bums and busts and that anyone who doesn't agree is a "dingbat"

And after only two seasons in the league having been drafted 9th overall. You admittedly say he has played in approximately 16 games in two seasons. He became a Jet while injured and his injury situation cost him time in TC to learn the professional game. So once he gets back, he's terrible and hardly sees any action because he's such a liability.

At the end of his rookie season he had ONE good game IMO against a hapless Miami Dolphins team. So everyone has high hopes for him going into his 2nd season (including myself), and what does he do?

He quickly gets injured in TC and misses time. When he finally gets back in the season he very quickly ruptures his Achilles tendon and is shelved yet again to injury.

THIS all the while he was NINTH overall in the 2013 draft.

Now you still tap on the computer stroking his bravery, willingness to play through injuries, his great play, etc.

Is there anything else that I am missing? Does that completely cover this man love you have for him?

I have officially reached the twilight zone!?

Dee Milliner playing in only HALF of the games he should have played in, being injured frequently, being benched for poor or ineffective play while you are the NINTH overall pick constitutes a BUM.

It constitutes a BUST of colossal proportions. Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, if you are asking ANY NFL fan that isn't a Jets fan obviously:rolleyes: if the Jets selection of Dee Milliner was worth it?

They would ALL tell you given he has played in only 16 games? That would be considered a BUST and super miss in the top 10.

I believe that was directed to mr doom and gloom himself, Mainejet

Isn't this predictable. Just because I prefer to see results on the field and NO excuses before I give praise to a player and the FO that selected the player, I am now Mr. Doom and Gloom. Go figure.

Just so you know, I am not depressed in the least, I just want results from my favorite team once and for all before I die.

Maybe if our former stubborn HC didn't put Milliner out there last year against the Packers without even going through a walk through(and putting him on Jordy Nelson no less), playing him after that without being able to practice a full week, his high ankle sprain could've healed properly and his body would've been in football shape. That might have prevented that achilles tendon tear. Now, we'll never know, but Ryan has a history of putting players on the field who aren't physically able to perform(like playing Cro on one hip in 2013). Let's see Milliner fully healthy with a competent coaching staff before we write him off.
