Mo signed by Jets

I never thought this would happen and the numbers as I am looking at the posts seems rather reasonable. I am completely shocked. I never believed this would get done, not at this point. I think it is fairly obvious that Mo lowered his demands. Either way this is excellent news. Mo is a great player and he really makes that DL. I don't this changes the teams bleek outlook this season, but for the future, if they can build an offense, the Jets could soon be a contender.

What I love about this deal is that it was such a surprise. This really is the epitome of a front office that keeps its business internal. I don't recall seeing any leaks about this.

Not everyone believes this is a bleak season. You may be right or you may be wrong. This is what makes the NFL great because things change weekly. They have a tough schedule and those things change with injuries. BTW, they have a very good offense if Fitz signs. I don't know if Fitz can come close to last years numbers. If not, I agree the season is pretty bleak.

And what do you think of Mac now??

I think it's great he was able to resign Mo, but then again that was a mandate since the day he walked through the door. But the roster is still lacking. He still ignored the OL and it will still cost this team. He still selected a player that is a bad fit for this defense. This team will still suffer through a losing season even with Mo at DE. But of course you knew whether Mo signed the franchise tender or signed a long term deal he'd still be playing for NYJ, right? It's not like the Jets suddenly became a much better team.

Don't mean to start a major debate here, but I really don't see this season as "bleek".

This deal opens up the door for a 1 year deal with Fitz. Definitely a major upgrade from the alternative. The D, which was very good last year, barring injuries, will be better this year. The LB'ers, who were a liability last season has been upgraded.

With Fitz back the O should be improved also. I liked Ivory as a RB, but he was a liability as a blocker, and receiver. Forte should improve that. Clady, if he can stay healthy, will be an upgrade over Brick. The Jets have several young, unknown , but with promise, OL. The starters will at worst be adequate.

Jets still have Marshall, and Decker. The young guys behind them are still unknown, but I have to admit I'm excited to see how the young guys turn out. Guys like Smith, Anderson, Enunwa, Thompkins and Peake may not have proven anything yet, but ya have to love the potential there. Some of these guys have some great size speed ratio.

The TE position was abysmal last year. I'm hoping Amaro, and or Sudfeld could/should bring a major upgrade there.

IMO if the chips fall right the Jets should be in the mix this year.

Heard an interview with Westoff who said he didn't think Sheldon looked in shape coming off a year where he was somewhat mediocre and admittedly out of shape. Perhaps the Jets have changed their priorities thinking Mo was the safer bet. This will be a nice wake up call to Sheldon knowing he's gonna have to step it up if he wants his money.

Here's exactly how Muhammad Wilkerson's Jets contract came together

Ever since Mike Maccagnan became the Jets' general manager last offseason, contract discussions had been virtually non-existent with defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson's camp. The two sides spoke, sure. But meaningful dialogue rarely happened.

Wilkerson, a Linden native who is perhaps the Jets' best player, desperately wanted a lucrative, long-term contract from his hometown team, which drafted him in the first round in 2011. But as Friday's 4 p.m. franchise tag deadline neared, Wilkerson figured there was no chance he'd sign a deal.

Analyzing Jets' Muhammad Wilkerson contract
He was prepared to play 2016 on a one-year tag contract. He also was not going to report when training camp began July 27. He was serious about this. After all, as long as he didn't sign his tag, he couldn't be fined for no-showing. He was that fed up with this whole stalemate.

Last week, Jets executives and Wilkerson's agent, Chad Wiestling, engaged in brief conversations that again went nowhere — just like how Wilkerson's contract situation had stalled over the past year and a half.

So how, then, did Wilkerson end up getting a five-year, $86 million contract (including $54 million guaranteed) from the Jets just before Friday's deadline? How did he pocket $37 million fully guaranteed in the first two years, including a $15 million signing bonus and $22 million in total base salaries for 2016 and 2017?

(Wilkerson's 2016 salary cap figure will be about half of the $15.701 million he was due to make on the franchise tag — a cap savings of about $7.85 million for the Jets.)

It started Wednesday night, around 8:30, when the Jets sent a contract offer that finally intrigued Wilkerson's camp. All of the sporadic previous offers over the past 18 months had failed to even approach what Wilkerson wanted. Before Wednesday, the sides were nowhere close. But this? This was a much richer offer.

The Jets were ready to play ball. But they held firm on offering a five-year deal. Wilkerson wanted a six-year contract. Wilkerson's camp spent Thursday pondering the Jets' offer from Wednesday. Five years was fine, as long as the money approached what defensive tackle Fletcher Cox got from the Eagles — $63 million guaranteed, with $36 million fully guaranteed at signing.

The negotiation wheels began to turn. The two sides talked sporadically Thursday. Then, around 3:15 a.m. Friday, the Jets sent a new, better offer. Now, the Wilkerson camp was really intrigued. From Friday morning right up until the 4 p.m. deadline, the two sides went back and forth over the telephone.

Wilkerson's camp liked that the Jets' offer had improved to about $17 million per year — almost exactly what Cox got. But Friday's sticking point was the contract's injury guarantee money in Year 3. Wilkerson's camp wanted money moved from the back end of the contract, in order to improve the Year 3 value.

The deal didn't officially get done until just before 4 p.m. And like that, contract negotiations that were dormant until Wednesday night had transformed into, well, a contract.

How essentially non-existent were talks before Wednesday? The Jets made an offer at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. The two sides talked in early June, and again briefly last week. But other than that? Silence.

This deal coming together at the last minute stunned not only outside observers, but also those intimately involved in the process, including Wilkerson. He had come to accept that it surely would not happen. He never imagined it would. Not until everything changed Wednesday, and the Jets increased their offer.

Wilkerson, who never wanted to leave the Jets and his home state, is excited to have this over. Relieved, really. It is a weight off his shoulders. No more questions, from others or even in his own mind, about what the future holds.

BTW Slater says in the above article that the Jets save 7.85 M, Cimini is reporting it's 5.7M.

The Mo Wilkerson deal creates $5.7 million in cap room for the Jets. His new cap charge is $10 million, per... http://espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0545944007197331562-4

if Richardson hasn't learned his lesson by starting 2 seasons in a row suspended, and IMO he lucked out this time. and still came to camp out of shape, he is just to stupid to hear a wake up call.

If true, this may have had a dramatic impact on the Jets upping their offer at the 11th hour. If Richardson really showed up out of shape I am very grateful the Jets signed Mo

He probably hasn't. I'm surprised we haven't heard anything from his mouth about the police issues recently. I'm glad we have Mo signed because he is a better human. Sheldon is just a good football player and probably a better one than Mo, but character has to count for something.

Well, I do see this season as "bleak". And don't take it personal, this is a message board and we post opinions/thoughts on the team. Actually your optimism is to be admired.
But I look at the schedule and I say what are the Jets known for?
1) They beat ONE winning team per season and that hasn't changed since 2013.

2)They were the recipient of winning season as a result of aa legendary easy schedule in 2015. Honestly, the 10-6 season I feel is a mirage. I definitely believe they are better than they were in 2014, but equally not as good as their 10-6 season would indicate. It's somewhere in the middle.
3) I see Todd Bowles as a very HO HUM HC that pretty much reminds me of Herm Edwards a lot. He coaches not to lose. In my book, that basically guarantees you will lose.
4) I see Mac as another disappointment that honestly did NOT do enough to make this team better. In fact, besides the teams schedule, I see Mac as being the very biggest reason why we will have a losing season in 2016.

He added some nice players to backfill some of the players leaving, but he did NOTHING to make the team better. The team NEEDED OL and he didn't do a thing for it. I don't believe Matt Forte will be anything special behind that OL. In fact, I think he'll have worse stats than Chrsis Ivory last season.

The defense will be better but how much better are they going to be? They were already 4th in the league. The defense does not constitute enough of a difference between rosters to see the Jets overcoming their schedule. In fact, I don't believe they'll win a game until week 8.

I think Bowles is a lot more like Rex than like Herm, in terms of scheme. But I know it has been decided that Bowles is not a good coach, regardless of what he does - for whatever reason.

if richardson had the balls to show up to OTAs out of shape, he is the undisputed biggest dope on the team..

the competition was steep, well done..

Ability to stay on the field matters too.
