I have no problem letting Macc pick his own guys, but it does seem kinda weird to praise the Jets draft then fire the guys who helped make it happen . . .

And scouts Rick Courtright, David Hinson, Cole Hufnagel, Chris Prescott and Seth Turner are also gone, according to Costello.

These must have been the scouts who agreed with me in not taking Leonard Williams with the 6th pick.

we don't how much of this they did though?

yes they may have gathered info on players but we don't know what players they promoted for and anyway mac being in scouting before i am sure he had his own notes and relied on what he has been doing the last 20 years.

MACCG kept the Jets scouts, brought his own scouts in and had twice the input for drafting. Now the Draft is over and he releases the old scouting system. He sure did come prepared for the Draft.

I am pretty sure the decisions on these guys were made long before any picks were made.

Although I can see why scouts who would not go with the top-rated player in the draft in the #6 slot would find themselves out of a job.

Not if the draft was a result of OVERRIDING the choices those scouts put forward.
In fact, their picks vs Bowles'/Mac's decisions, may be the very reason that prompted them being fired.
If past history is any indication of where the talent assessment skill in NJ now lies, this can ONLY be seen as both a long-needed change and a step forward for the future prospects of drafts down the road.

do scouts really have any input in making "on the clock" draft picks?

i would assume the scouts prepare the various scouting reports on the players/areas they cover, and the GM and personnel people use these reports to put together a draft board. and as the draft is unwinding, the GM and his top assistants will make decisions on who to pick. so i'm not so sure those that were just laid off were all that instrumental in the decisions made during the actual draft.

now this is based on no actual knowledge of how a draft war room is organized, but just an educated guess.

It varies by organization.
Some GMs rely very heavily on scout input in making their board, and on going through it in real rime during the draft to make changes.
Indy, under Dungy/Caldwell & Polian, shared a LOT of the draft duties as a triumvirate, with scouts having almost an equal voice as the GM & HC - and that worked quite well for them, getting to 2 Super Bowls in 4 years & 3 AFCC games in 8 seasons.
They never had less than 10 wins and had 9 consecutive playoff berths (9-8) from '02-'10.

Other GMs are a bit more autocratic, and they make every decision without much regard for the feelings of their scouts.
(King Jerry up until a couple years ago, when he gave his son Steven a lot more control - which seems to be working out better for DAL - and there has been a vast improvement in AZ since Bill Bidwell's kids [Michael & Bill Jr.] took the reigns in 2007 and started using their scouts' advice more.)
Does anyone honestly believe either Carroll or Hoodie listen to anyone except their own demons?
Yet they have been extremely successful lately.

It doesn't really seems to matter, as long as it works for that team, though HYATT™ suspects scouts have some limited effect on the final product, in most cases.
In the end, the buck stops on the GM's desk however, & they will do what they have to do to keep their job.

I would think Macc relied heavily on himself and information he took with him from Houston and not just information gathered by Jet scouts.

Yep, and it was reported about a week before the draft that Mac was like a man possessed, totally obsessed with the draft, essentially locking himself in his office and he didn't want to talk to ANYBODY unless it was draft related.

I posted that quip in this forum and it supposedly came from a source inside the building.

That said, Mac is a scout himself by trade and I'm sure he had his own value board ... and used it.

What else is he going to say.... even if he and his new team did a lot of work he said the politically correct thing. I say its about ****ing time. Get some dam pros in here so we can kick ass every year not every 15 or 20 or...you get my drift.

True, if you think about it, the Jets had information from several different teams scouts this year.
Rex Hogan came from the Bears, Brian Heimerdinger the Rams. Maccagnan himself the Texans. Bowles the Cardinals and the Jets staff that was here.

Guess he thought they didn't contirbute much to this draft. Wonder who he relied on for this year's picks.

Beside himself, Brian Heimerdinger(who made Prophett obsolete as he heads both pro/college personnel) and Rex Hogan. He's clearing out the rest of Bradway's people.
