The Jets haven’t given up on the idea of holding onto both defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson and defensive tackle Damon Harrison, but they only have one franchise tag to use to ensure that a player can’t leave without compensation in the form of two first-round picks or a package agreed on in a trade.
Wilkerson has been the expected recipient of that tag for some time and nothing has changed about the Jets’ plans with the deadline to use the tag a little more than 24 hours away. Kim Jones of NFL Media and Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News are both reporting Monday that the Jets will use the tag on Wilkerson.
The tag for defensive ends this year comes in at a little over $15.7 million, all of which would be guaranteed if and when Wilkerson signs the tag. The two sides would still have until July 15 to talk about a longer contract and, as mentioned, the Jets could also trade Wilkerson to another club although Mehta reports that’s an unlikely outcome.
With Wilkerson getting the tag and the team working to re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, the chances that Harrison hits the open market look likelier with a little more than a week to go before the new league year starts.
