My 2017 Season: Darron Lee

If you told me to grade myself at the end of my rookie year on an A-D scale, I’d give a D-minus.

I hold myself to very high standards, which is what made it difficult when my position coach, Mike Caldwell, gave me an offseason checklist. It was hard not because I couldn’t do it, but because I already knew what was on it — study, master my footwork, improve my coverage skills. Simply put, I knew I had to step up in my second year.

Once Dave [Harris] left, I took it as a signal that I needed to speed up my learning curve regardless of who takes over the Mike. I was brought here to make splash plays. I know I’m a young guy at 23 years old, but you have to act older than your age in this league and I feel like my maturity is one of the reasons I’m here.

I felt good going into training camp as I knew what to expect. Playbook — check. Calls — check. This year it was time to just go out and compete. Deep breath. 3…2…1…

I didn’t exhale until we lost in Oakland. I kept inhaling and I didn’t relax. We just allowed 370 rushing yards in two games and that was going to be the end of that story. It was a huge reality check. I was trying to control everything instead of focusing on my assignments and that’s not how this game goes. You can only control your job. Now it’s nice and smooth on the field. I inhale and exhale.

When I settled in, that’s when the fun began. I was comfortable, hungry. I diagnosed plays quicker, I was bringing down the ball carrier behind the line and covering a lot better. Demario [Davis] and I played off each other, making sure we had each other’s backs. He set us up, I honed in on offensive checks and alerted the guys what’s coming. My personal favorite is when you call their play out and you’re right. When everybody on offense looks at you after you call the play, that’s how you know you hit the nail on the head. It’s so much fun. That’s why we were able to play fast. We started doing that in Week 3.

Even though I’m better than my rookie season, don’t get me wrong, there’s still a lot of splash plays I can make to help change the outcome of the game. We’re right there. Look at all the close games we played in. That’s the best part.

Moving forward, my main focus is turning our hard work into wins. I want to better myself, but I always want to do so in a position where our team is expected to win games instead of everybody counting us out. That’s the next step and that’s a huge hill to climb, but it’s possible.

Let me tell you this, Jets Nation — greatness is forming inside these walls. Everybody is confident and no one is worried. We’re all sticking together and going out to get better every single day. That’s the beauty of this. We know we’re a young team, we know we’re a hungry team. If you quit, you’re never going to know how good you could be, so that’s why we’re going to keep pushing each other. I’m really looking forward to the growth. We know if we keep chipping away, we’re eventually going to get to the pot of gold.

I like his honesty, particularly his rookie season. He also knows that he hasn't arrived yet either, so whats wrong with that?

nothing..

unfortunately, this is an absolute non story for me.. who being intellectually honest will tell you lee is ever going to live up to his draft position?? more specifically, if there was more to get out of this kid, what points to this regime being the guys to do so??

Excellent post 13. Is there anyone at this point that can spin this and make it sound like Lee was actually worth investing a 1st rounder in? That whole draft was a sham. Between Lee and Hack that draft is legendary BAD. It's also managed to severely limit this teams growth speed/potential. What's worse is he actually improved in the middle part of the season. But the last 5 games of the season he was worse than ever before.

You may like his honesty, but that doesn't translate to the field. If he was a late Rd pick, fine. He was a #1 pick who stinks! Hackenberg shows honesty. Maybe we should anoint him as our Franchise QB!

Will you feel the same way, if you find out this off season that he tried to smack the piss out of his girlfriend again? You're not taking into account all of his baggage. It's not just bad play with no excuse. It's also off the field behavior issues.

Maine - I know you are not a fan, but didn't he get much better this year or at least improve considerably from rookie season? He played in two more games his sophomore than his rookie season so the comparison is a bit skewed, but he had a 28% increase in total tackles (94 vs 73), 49% increase in solo tackles (67 vs 45), tripled his sacks (3 vs 1), 2 FF vs 0, almost tripled his TFL or STF (8 vs 3). He definitely needs to improve, particularly in pass defense and consistency, but I think he clearly is on the upswing. He has the athleticism and smarts to get better, lets hope we see continued improvement.
My concerns are not necessarily on the field, the incident at the concert last summer and his game suspension for missing/being late to meeting are troublesome. From what I see he comes from a decent family and appears to be pretty smart, I'm hoping that the off field stuff is due to immaturity.

great post that I agree with. just because you get into trouble once does not mean everyone will end up as a bad apple. As far as Lee i see him as improved & if he is what he says he is & will do what he says will....well he could be a good player for us for a few years. Plus, the experts on the Jets like him:global (37):

I have no qualms about his off field incidents, but your comparing Lee the same way others were comparing Miliner.

What am I missing with your comment? How am I comparing Lee to Milliner? Other than both being #1 picks of the Jets, Lee has nothing in common with Milliner. But for a three game stretch Milliner was not very productive, and he couldn't stay on the field. Also to my knowledge he had no off-field issues.

You heard me say in my original post that he got better as a run defender, didn't you? Yes, he improved. But honestly, not much. he still cannot cover passing routes even if his life depended on it. Please tell me when you see him get his head turned to look for the football in pass coverage. I haven't seen it once. It doesn't exist and trust me something as baseline as that I have searched high and low to find in the tape. It just isn't there. He's NOT a natural pass defender. He doesn't have the first clue how to cover. the only thing he's done is relied on his speed to keep up with pass receivers, however, the receivers still catch that's thrown their way unless the QB somehow throws an errant pass.

Meanwhile, this improvement you are trying to point is a few games in the middle part of the season. He played well in the Buffalo Thursday night game. He was downright wretched in the Oakland game and later on against the Saints. Who was the RB from the Saints I think that stiff armed him right on his a$$ as he tore off a big run at the very beginning of the game?

What more do you want me to say? Through his first 2 seasons in the NFL he is very clearly NOT worth even close to a 1st rounder. At very best you're talking about a 4th or 5th rounder. That's objective.

There's also no reason to think he'll improve beyond what he already is. At some point players level out and I think Lee is probably already there........

You are truly missing with my comment. I will leave it as is. In your mind Lee is going to be an explosive player for us in years to come. In my mind, he has Bust written all over him.
