Namath Says He Wants Hackenberg to Win Jets Starting QB Job

Hackenberg will likely start training camp as the Jets' third-string quarterback, behind McCown and Petty. He will have to do a lot of work to impress head coach Todd Bowles to be in the conversation for a starting job, but at least he has one big show of support from a Jets legend.

"I know what Josh can do. He's solid. Never had a real good team to play with. Hopefully the team can step up and give him support. But I'd like to see Hackenberg get a shot, and I'd like to see him win the job if possible. That would give us, 'Maybe we don't do it this year, but boy we'll get ready next year.' I'm not wishing Josh any bad luck. But I certainly would like to see Hackenberg blossom."

I personally like Petty because he is a Dallas local kid. I feel like Hack has the most arm talent. I would keep my eye on Evans though. I don't want McCown to take a single snap.

that said, petty & hackenberg need to play well enough (training camp/preseason) that even bowles feels he has no other choice but to start one or the other.. because bowles ain't starting anybody but mccown a nanosecond before he feels he has no other choice/mandated..

Every analyst expects McCown to win the job. In my opinion if he's not 100% better than the young guys, he should sit.

Hoping McCown is just window dressing just to say they brought in a veteran. However, I almost guarantee McCown will start unless Hackenberg shines like a super nova in preseason. Bowles will be in job preservation mode this year (as will Mac) and in their mind the veteran will probably give them the best chance to win (and BTW possibly destroy our chance to be in the top three picks next year). Not a great situation that's being played out, unless Woody is guaranteeing jobs regardless.

If McCown wins the job no one is getting fired for that. It appears the Jets plan is Hack and Petty battle it out for the starting job if they can't win it; they ride with McCown into next years draft where they take one of the top prospects. And move forward from there. If Bowles doesn't improve as a HC, if the young guys aren't making any progress then we will probably see everyone fired.


On a side not if McCown wins the job and the Jets go 8-8, 7-9, 6-10 or whatever record that puts them out of consideration for whichever QB they see as the future franchise they will trade a grip load to get their guy...No matter who the GM and Coach are.

You're looking at it wrong... McCown is insurance if Hack or Petty get us an opening day win and we need a 1-14 run...
