Need a fourth QB

not sure if it makes too much sense having Darnold playing behind o linemen who won’t be in the league in a few weeks. Risking injury is not worth it.

going to be interesting to see how this unfolds - and who gets the first half minutes in the next 2 preseason games where starters generally play at least the first half of both. I suspect against Washington, the team will go with the same QB rotation as the first preseason game. It would seem though - if Darnold plays well again against Washington, and truly emerges as the potential opening day starter - he would seemingly have to start with the first stringers against the Giants and play into the 3rd quarter.

I could then also also see Darnold(if deemed to be opening day starter) even the playing the first quarter against the eagles in the preseason final(which is usually reserved for backups - with Bridgewater being further showcased by playing the final 3 quarters of that game). The good thing is McCowen doesn't need much to be ready.

In any event - at some point soon when other teams start making cuts - the Jet brass will probably pickup a rookie QB with a eye toward eventually putting him on the practice squad or the roster depending on what happens with Bridgewater

a couple of other points - another factor which also has to be considered in this QB equation is Bridgewater's medical condition(the Vikes did not think((as Zimmer said)) he could withstand the rigors) and McCowen who for the most part(particularly whenever he has played significantly) has almost always ended up injured

another point, playing Washington next week is off a short week, on national TV, and on the road - if the team wants to nurture Darnold(maybe they do not) - it doesn't seem like they'd foist him into a starting situation there. However, as stated if he were to do well again off the bench - he'd seemingly would have to start against the Giants to be the starter against Detroit opening night. This leads me to the final preseason which is on the road(like opening night) and in a nasty place(albeit preseason), and it would seem Darnold would might be best served to get a taste & experience of starting an NFL game on the road - off a somewhat quick turn around game against the Giants.

in any event - as Parcells used to say -"we'll see"

They will need a QB at the very least for game four preseason. Usually starters don't play that game and I don't want to get Darnold hurt in mop up time.

as said, the team will probably add another QB at some point who may indeed see some action in the 4th preseason game, BUT there can be no denying both Bridewater(rust) and Darnold(inexperience) need as much preseason game play experience as possible which renders" normal" preseason playing protocol somewhat inapplicable to this situation.

I can see any one of the 3 QB’s starting week one at this point. Darnold and Bridgewater became 1B and 1C in my mind. There’s still 3 preseason games left for the young guys to pull ahead.

The problem with adding a QB is it takes reps away from both Teddy and Darnold. If Darnold has any chance to start week 1, he needs as many reps as possible. Last night was a nice showing but very vanilla. Predetermined reads, short passes.
McCown still needs camp reps, can't just have him coach the other 2 for a month and expect him to be ready to play week 1.
Might be better to go very run heavy in game 4 with guys like Rawls and Atkinson who are not likely to make the roster.
