HC Robert Saleh, defensive coordinator with the 49ers, picked Jeff Ulbrich as his DC and early on Saleh announced his intention to switch the Jets defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4. That has altered the approach of the team's scouts, to a degree.

"All of us over next few weeks ahead of [staff] meetings [in mid-February] have to go back and tweak some of our evaluations from the fall because of a 4-3 from a 3-4 team on the defensive side and try to talk about a players fitting either or system," Savage, the senior adviser said. "There are enough coaching changes around the league that happen on a regular basis that we have to scout defensive players for both schemes. Everyone ends up with four in the front, two linebackers and five in the back.

"What Robert and Jeff Ulbrich will bring to the defense will help our scouting staff. In the 3-4 you have to project every single player, and it can get more complicated. But it gives us a more clear vision."

I thought it was interesting to hear Phil Savage's (I think) comments on evaluating college players for a 4-3 vs a 3-4 defense. He said that with a 3-4, you have to project college players for every position because the schemes that are run in college are more more similar to the 4-3. So using the 4-3 allows scouts to have a clearer picture as to how a particular player is suited for the next level. Takes some of the guesswork out of the process.

In the past the jets were looking for guys that would fit the 4-F.....we have been good at that for years

I would have thought that a wise GM looks for players who could fit in either approach - especially since one will operate in a variety of looks and personnel combos in the course of a season.

players who fit a narrow niche constrain tactics - now that doesnt mean that one avoids narrow niche players in the 7th round or as an UDFA - but high picks need to have flexibility

The goal is to keep your quarterback's uniform clean and the other team's guy dirty.
It comes down to block and tackle.
All the rest is just ways to make those things happen, given the strengths of each of your players.
There are no new systems that haven't been tried before. The good coaches put their players in a system in which the players can excel, and they can't try to fit players into a preconceived scheme that doesn't fit them.
