Overall, I'm happy with this draft. If Hackenberg eventually becomes the starter, this will go down as a great draft. It should be noted that Mac, TB, the head scout, Gailey, and the QB coach all attended a private workout with Hackenberg, and presumably had a long talk with him. If we are say that we, as laymen and outsiders know better than all of the above men, then we are quite frankly nuts. I did a great deal of reading yesterday, and one of the articles listed all of the QBs that Gailey has worked with. Almost all of them had their best years under Gailey. As our prime example, look at what Chan did with Fitz, whom we all want to return! My main concern with Hack is that he has become gun-shy, as happened with David Carr in Houston. We shall see. In any case, we did NOT give up the farm to draft Hackenberg. It's not as if we traded up and gave up half of our draft, as the first two teams in the draft did this year.
A few other general points: I was the person who first posted the negative evaluations of Pro Football Focus, and I did this *before* the draft started. I do have a great deal of respect for their views, *but*, after my additional reading of other sources, I have realized something about PFF. Their analyses, although extremely sophisticated in most respects, lack context in some instances. For example, with regard to Darron Lee, who was #1 on their "Buyer Beware" list, the analysis mentioned him missing tackles, taking poor angles, etc. However, the PFF write-up did *not* reference the fact that Lee had only been playing linebacker for a short time. Also, an analysis written before the draft would not know that Lee will be playing behind perhaps the best defensive line in the league, thereby providing protection for a light LB. Context is important. It's like a handicapper noting that a horse only finished 6th in his last race, without mentioning that he was trapped along the rail.
Last point for this post: I know that we're all fans, but the knee-jerk negativity of some on this board (and it's worse, I know, on other boards) is monotonous and frustrating. If the Jets don't draft exactly whom *you* want, then everyone involved with the pick is an idiot. There's a phrase for this in psychology: "confirmation bias." There's another word that fits:"childish." Some of the same posters who complained when we *didn't* draft a QB in the 1st round complained when we *did* draft a QB in the 2nd round!! Do you *ever* check yourselves out? If you want to bring up Hackenberg's negatives, go ahead, but...do you realize that the top pick in the draft had a losing record? Most likely, this paragraph will have no effect on those to whom it is directed; it's like trying to argue with a bigot. End of rant.
It goes both ways the people that say everything is great have the same odds of being wrong as the people that say everything is wrong. It works both ways...Bottom line is we should all want super stars out of every pick.. I do on all my picks for the Cards & jets.
