New York/New Jersey sports fandom thread

I figured I start a thread different than anything else we got going on right now. Being that we’re at a dry spell of sports for most of us, this seemed like a good idea. The New York Knicks have won their first Championship in 53 years and the parade is going on as I’m starting this thread.

I’m a die-hard Knicks fan and been one longer than I’ve been a Jets fan but my heart for some stupid ass reason, is solely to the Jets! I had no desire to travel from VA back home for the parade but if the Jets ever won while I was still alive, I would definitely consider it. Hopefully one day-ONE DAY!!!

I was only 2 years old when the Knicks won in 73. Obviously I don’t even remember that. So this is a long time coming and I’m truly proud of my New York Knicks. I started this thread, just to switch it up and see where all of our sports fandom is with the NY-NJ and the other surrounding area pro teams?

For me, I’m strictly football and basketball all day long. So I’m a die-hard Jets and Knicks fan and been that way since 1982 for the Jets. I can’t even remember when I started being a Knicks fan but I know it was before I was a Jets fan. I remember working in the MSG as a teenager as a vendor in the late 80’s and watching the Knicks and Rangers play. Great times!!!

To me, NYC is known as a basketball city and the Mecca of basketball because there’s no room for any other sport but basketball. There’s a basketball court every other five blocks in the city. New York State may be different but the city it’s that way. At least in the area I grow in and from what I remember.

Baseball I not a fan of at all really but I do root for the Yankees and the Mets. I could care less about hockey and soccer. So I guess I would route for all NY-NJ pro hockey and soccer teams but what ever. So let’s get into it, where does your fandom reside and when did it all start?

At least hockey is still a great sport IMO. Both football and basketball are not. I don't live in NY and have zero affiliation with that state. I grew up in Texas and hated everything about the Cowboys even though my mom was a season ticket holder. I now live in Utah and have become a Mammoth fan since their first year was last year. So I get to watch them from their infancy. I no longer consider myself a Texan. I was and still kind of am a fan of the Dallas Stars, but that was my mom's team and I have my own Utah team now. I loved Dirk and was a Mavs fan because of him. He is long gone and I haven't watched a single second of basketball since he left. I was a huge Larry Bird fan back in 80's and loved the Magic/Bird rivalry which saved the NBA. Then 20 years of exciting rivalries. Today's basketball is a joke. I'm a soccer coach and about the only time I care about soccer is when the men's World Cup is going on and this time around the US seems less embarrassing than usual.

Notice it took me a long time to talk about the Jets. Well, even though I follow them loosely, I don't really care much about them anymore. Haven't purchased Sunday Ticket or watched any games outside of primetime embarrassments. I occasionally listen to them when I'm up in the mountains because of Bob WIschusen. I live in a smaller city in the far SW corner of Utah. I don't waste my Sundays anymore with the NFL like I used to. I live in a place where I can snowmobile in the morning an hour away, play golf in the afternoon and ride side by sides in the sand dunes all in the same day. I live 30 minutes from Zion NP. I have little to no traffic here so I have little to no stress. I run and coach a soccer club here. So when the Jets lose, I no longer yell or break things. I just pack up my Jeep and head for the mountains or play in the rocks or sand. If the Jets win a SB one day, I'm sure I will be happy, but if they don't I know I will still be happy because I no longer let sports consume my life. I wonder if I wasn't a part of this forum if I would care at all. Yes the Jets sucked the life out of me, but I realized when I moved to Utah that it just wasn't worth it anymore to live and die by some team that doesn't give two shits about me. I'm sure they could suck me right back in, but the chances of them being consistently good is pretty low.
