Mariota to Eagles keeps gaining steam

The path won’t be clear until the Buccaneers select quarterback Jameis Winston, which barring something unforeseen they will do. Once that happens, it’s becoming harder not to imagine the Eagles leaping from No. 20 to No. 2 to get quarterback Marcus Mariota.

In the second and final mock PFT draft of the never ending mock-draft season, the trade was included. The sense that coach Chip Kelly would give up plenty to get the one sure thing he sees in this (and perhaps any) draft continues to gather momentum, with more and more veteran players reportedly available to be sent elsewhere and with the Browns reportedly believing they can finally get quarterback Sam Bradford.

The brilliance of the maneuver, if it happens, was the Bradford trade. The Eagles gave up quarterback Nick Foles, a fourth-round pick in 2015, and a second-round pick in 2016 for Bradford. (They’ll get back a fourth-round pick from the Rams if Bradford doesn’t start at least eight games, and a third-round pick if he ends up on injured reserve before Week One.) That’s a fairly large sacrifice to get a guy who ultimately would become a piece of the Mariota puzzle, but having Bradford to send to Cleveland becomes the key piece in giving Tennessee a first-round selection for 2015 significantly higher than pick No. 20.

So with the Bradford (and likely more) going to Cleveland for the No. 12 selection (and possibly Johnny Manziel), the Eagles can package No. 12 with No. 20, a first-round pick in 2016, and whatever else it takes to get Tennessee’s attention — including one or more of the veteran players who reportedly are available, including Mychal Kendricks, Vinny Curry, Brandon Boykin, and/or Fletcher Cox.

It doesn’t mean it will happen. But it clearly shows that the Eagles will try to get there. In about 12 hours, we’ll know if they did.

Until then, we know Chip Kelly has the power to do whatever he wants. What’s the point of having that power if he doesn’t use it to get the one guy who can run his offense the way he wants it to be run?

Excuse us for wasting your time, oh great and omnipotent Nostradamas of all draftniks

I stopped watching Mr. Rodgers long ago and no longer play in the land of "Make Believe." if you want to pretend Mariota, Winston, Tom Brady, or Joe Montana will be on the board at 6, have at it.

Mariota has to become the next Peyton for this to be worth it. If he turns out to be the next Kaepernick or worse, it's going to be a bloodbath in Philly.

He;s one of the hardest QB prospects to figure out. From a pure talent standpoint, he's closer to Geno Smith, Alex Smith, and kaepernick than Aaron Rodgers in terms of a spread QB. Rodgers has a much better throwing motion and stronger arm than Mariota; however, what make Mariota so tough to gauge, is he has a tremendous IQ and work ethic. Even watching the film of his pro day he has shortened his throwing motion, worked on his timing on planting on his back foot, and improved his mechanics when he steps in and releases. You have to think with that work thic, he can be special...you just dont have anything, zero, on film that makes you feel comfortable he can be more than a single read QB...because thats all he has ever been (look here, throw if open run if not). Never having read a defensive or turned his head to look at more than 1 WR is a big learning curve...but he seems smart enough to figure it out. Should be interesting to watch him develop.

I like next year's crop of QBs a lot though.

Mariota could become an owner’s pick in Tennessee

The football operation in Tennessee has been getting out the word that they see Zach Mettenberger as their potential franchise quarterback. Which would make them not interested in taking a potential franchise quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick.

Which would make them more inclined to trade the No. 2 overall pick.

But there’s a catch. Despite an insistence from interim president Steve Underwood that the team isn’t for sale, a persistent belief exists that the team actually is for sale. And a belief currently exists that Underwood, who previously was believed to have no influence over the draft process, could make a push for Mariota given the value that a young, potential franchise quarterback could add to the franchise itself.

And that’s where business considerations can supersede football strategy. Fans don’t buy tickets to watch coaches coach or General Managers generally manage. They come to see players. Star players. The Titans currently have few, if any.

Mariota could become one. His presence could make it easier to sell the team for the right price.

His potential presence could make it harder for the coach and the G.M. to take whatever the best offer is from the Eagles — which could force the Eagles to make an even better offer, if they want Mariota.

I could see the Raiders offering the Eagles a fourth rounder for Vin Curry .( who doesn't fit the Eagles defense)

Washington still looking to trade down

Posted by Mike Florio on April 30, 2015, 9:45 AM EDT
McCloughan
AP
For weeks, it has been believed that new Washington G.M. Scot McCloughan would like to trade down from the fifth overall pick. At one point, it looked like the leverage could be quarterback Marcus Mariota.

With the likelihood increasing that Mariota will be wearing his new team’s hat and carrying around his new jersey by the time Washington is on the clock, McCloughan and company apparently will be selling the ability to pick someone else at No. 5.

As one league source explains it, the one guy Washington potentially would take at No. 5 is linebacker Dante Fowler, Jr. Even if Fowler slips past the first four picks, the thinking is that McCloughan wants to accumulate extra picks in the hopes of changing out more of the roster and/or acquiring depth on both lines of scrimmage.

The goal could be to slide down far enough to get more picks but to still have a realistic shot at linebacker Bud Dupree. With Jameis Winston and Mariota most likely to be the first two players gone and only two more picks to go before Washington is on the clock, McCloughan will be able to dangle Fowler, receiver Amari Cooper, and/or defensive lineman Leonard Williams.

Id change the name of the thread to "NFL Draft 2015 - Everything Draft Related (Trades, Picks, Team/Pick Breakdown, etc)"

I think it may be confusing since the draft is more than just 4/30 (unless you planned to have a separate thread for each day...
