NFL Draft Facts

A few weeks ago on this board, there was a "debate" about players attending the draft, and whether Winston & Mariota should be there next thursday in Chicago. Here's some interesting facts:

1) The last #1 draft pick to miss attending the draft was Ohio States Big Daddy Wilkerson DT to the Bengals in 1994.

2) Besides Winston & Mariota, my boy Amari Cooper WR is also staying home.

3) 28 players have accepted to be there currently.

4) Both Leonard Williams & Kevin White are going to attend.

5) Joe Thomas LT from Wisconcin went fishing with his Dad in 2007, and the Browns drafted him 3rd.

6) In 2010 it expanded to 17 prospects attending.

7) Someone mentioned players can't afford to go ? The NFL pays for 2 first class airline tickets, or 4 coach seats.

8) The NFL pays for two Hotel rooms, plus transportation.

28 players accepted to be there? Plus with the 3 that aren't attending who will surely be picked. There are sure to be more than five players that will not be selected on day 1. I feel bad that that many players are going. There are always a few surprise picks towards the middle/end

Don't tell me moving the draft from NYC to Chicago played no role in these high profile no-shows.

We NYers take the appeal of NYC for granted.

Most of these kids are from small towns and coming to NYC for the draft was a big deal to these kids.

The NFL Draft is going to rotate from City to City each year. After Chicago, I'm hearing L.A. then Dallas. We can thank the Rockette's for messing up the annual draft in NYC.

Glad it's gone

About time to let Bears fans look and act like idiots when their team pick a player that doesn't show up at that spot on their dog-eared Kiper guides

Dumb to move draft...wait til it goes to LA and its like the Lakers games when people show up late and they have to pay seat fillers...This is also the last free time the players get once they are drafted...Im not going to Chicago or Miami or New Orleans for the draft

People probably thought the same thing when it was discovered the Super Bowl would be played in cities other than LA, New Orleans, and Miami. Initially, these were the only cities allowed to host the Super Bowl, still to this day 27 of the 49 super bowls (55%) have been played at these locations, but I think it has been better for the NFL to not have the same 3 locations. I think the same will hold true for the draft over time. Just my 2 cents.

Agree with Supe

Shocking news update for Zenophobes

There are a number of really terrific locations in this country not named New York City.....like Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, Nashville ,Atlanta, LA, Seattle and others that can easily stage and manage something like an NFL draft quite well.

Other than Miami (South Beach = half naked honey's), there's not a bigger draw in America for these kids than NYC. Okay maybe Hawaii and LA too, but thats about it, and I say that not as a NY xenophobe, I HATE NY, born and raised here and aware of the warts, but most of these kids only know the glorified image of NYC in popular culture so for them its a big deal. They don't have the same perception of NYC as those of us who live here. Half of us want to get the hell out. But to these kids NYC is the media and entertainment capital of the world, the city that never sleeps, its BIG TIME.

Respectfully disagree Hammer

I live in the Apple, love the place and wouldn't move anywhere else. Well, maybe Paree, but then I'd have to follow idiotic soccer, bicycle racing and whatever other awful sports that are big in Europe

I think it (all the no shows) is all about moving from NYC to Chicago. NFL may want to rethink this.
