NFL Draft: Jets next week could vault to...

it's not just the sooner is better than later fix issue - this is about sustainability and being in a decent/good cap status each year so you can target what the drafts do not reap. Then when you have a large enough nucleus ready to take the 'go for it' step, you can mortgage some future. Problem for Jets historically has been they have mortgaged to reach mediocrity with no upside beyond a short 2 year window. I'm over that repetitive formula and with stability now at HC/GM........dammit I'm taking the lumps to come out equipped to see a 10 year window of competitive football. I'm 54 yrs old - I don't need a reminder of how long it's been - I'm more interested in how many as in successive seasons of competing for the postseason/SB. That's the prize. This GM at least brought the blueprints from two winning organizations (BAL/PHI).

LFG!

A...FREAKIN'...MEN.

BTW, when you said in an earlier post, "this is a ground up operation and requires some patience beyond going into 2022 expecting playoffs" ,
that is what i meant by a leap. The 2022 Jet Team should be competitive to make it to the playoffs, but that isn't to say that JD's rebuild is a failure if (a.) we do not make it, but were in the hunt, or (b.) we got in but not really a SB contender.

he's putting a team together that truly has "the next man up", and that takes time.

they need to move CJ via trade this off season not because he stinks in coverage is they are going to draft his replacement

if they continue the rebuild of this defense the focus this off season will be the linebackers through the draft and possible safeties through free agency...

defensive line can use a free agent signing or two...

corners are set unless they take a flyer on a draft pick day three...

what about keep him aboard to mentor what will be a very young LB corp?

we would be paying to not have him play for us anyway, right...the only way a team would take the trade is if we ate a part of the contract.
however, JD likes 5th's, 6th's and 7th's, so he might consider the $$$ eaten to be worth to him to move him for a late round pick.

but i bet he'd be monumental in the development of a "To'o To'o" or a "Chad Muma".

Why not just keep him for 2022? He's off the books after our 2022 season next year.
off the books meaning limited guarantees under contract to 2024...
he will be 30, he is not worth if they draft his position...
rather see the rookie then him taking unnecessary snaps away...

we want to grow the roster with youth movement, and if you can get a late day 2 early day 3 pick for him you have to be stupid to keep him.
so what the dead loss, we need to worry about continuing the rebuild with youth movement... with draft picks and priority free agents... with like now signing players that fit the scheme with the roster hiccupped with covid list and injured reserve...

ate a part of the contract
we eat the guaranteed monies in bonuses...
we are paying those regardless...
but to rid his base salary off the books is huge...
of his $16 M guaranteed next season a new team may be willing to pay a part of that in taking him...
the new team could also restructure his contract over the last three years...
there is so many different ways things can go...
but keeping him on the roster in a rebuild and pay him $16 M to suck in coverage when we have the option to draft a better fit...
if you can get a team willing, like the Rams they are in the buying mood... like maybe the Green Bay Packers... teams that are in the contending state right now may be willing to go all in on a guy that can improve their situation...

they shopped him last off season but because he was off for two years no one was willing to eat part of his salary nor were willing to give more than a 5th round pick for him...

3 of the 4 players you cited are on rookie contracts...2 of those 3 play positions that you draft in the top of the first round if you have the ability to take them...LT- Becton and QB- Wilson. I will concede AVT is a luxury pick at LG where he was taken, but because they are all on a rookie deals, that makes none of them a cap killers.

Mcagganan brought in Bell- Dead Money, Trumaine - Dead Money...just to name a few who come off the books after this year.
We are "stuck" with Mosely's deal until next year, but at least he's a performer...and not a JD signing.

2022's FA period has us in the top 5, because we are getting rid of past mistakes, and because JD filled a roster playing Billy Beane "Money Ball"; not an easy task, because the guys he is signing know they aren't long term solutions, but place holders until we get rid of dead money.

i am not certain if you're being critical of JD's rebuild, but it seems like you are.
IMO, we are almost to a point that fiscal chains are being lifted...and then we will finally get a true sense of JD's abilities as a GM.
I'm more of a 'wait and see' guy. But I haven't been a fan of JD so far. We're going to have a significant amount of dead money next season also. A lot of these players aren't making enough strides forward to stick around.

this rebuild is unprecedented as far as the Jets are concerned. Don't compare it to past remakes - don't expect past results on those remakes........this is a ground up operation and requires some patience beyond going into 2022 expecting playoffs. we're not there yet, but there should be no excuses for 2023. Anyone thinking this thing is ready to go next year really needs to settle down.
I don't think anyone thinks that.

WADR, if many of the JD signings panned out, it would be a boon...so far, Quincy, Fant, McGovern (to some extent) fit that bill.
if they didn't pan out, then his Money Ball strategy clears them from our books quickly.

the dead money pit is all on Mac at this point.

I don't blame any Jet fan to be wait and see; our past GM's mortgaged futures on FA's and have been horrid in the drafts.
JD's first draft is murky right now, but last year's seems to be very good.
