Now Woody is one of us

Green Jets & Ham

King Of All Draftniks

This was his first real Same Old Jets moment as owner of the NY Jets.

There have been worst seasons under his ownership, much worse, and there have been terrible endings too, twice he came within a whisker of going to the Super Bowl only to fall short in the AFC Championship Game, but IMO this is the first time he truly understands what it means to root for, or own, this wretched franchise.

Think about it, he did everything right this off season, and this season went about as well as he could have hoped, and yet, in the end, he was kicked in the balls to such a degree that this had to be his worst nightmare, and THAT is what it means to be a Jets fan.

LET ME EXPLAIN

1. He made the right moves by firing Rex and Idzik and totally cleaning house.

2. He made the right moves by bringing in consultants like Charlie Casserly and Ron Wolf.

3. He correctly took their advice and hired the right GM.

4. He correctly took their advice and with the full approval of his new GM he hired the right HC.

5. He watched the veteran QB his new GM swiped for a 6th RD Pick set new franchise records at the position.

6. He watched the #1 WR his new GM brought in set a slew of new franchise records for a single season.

7. He watched his two starting WR's shatter the old NFL record for TD Catches by a pair of WR's in 9 Games in one season, a record Randy Moss and Cris Carter previously held at 7.

8. He watched his two WR's set all kinds of franchise records for a duo.

9. He watched his team catch fire down the stretch and win five in a row, in an AFC that was WIDE OPEN this year.

10. On the second to last weekend he watched his team beat the hated Patriots in an OT thriller, easily the greatest moment of the 2015 season, to gain control of their own destiny with one more game to play.

11. His team avoided the killer injuries to his best players thru 15 Games, for the most part.

Ordinarily if your team has this many significant positives, you are winning your division and getting a TOP 2 Seed.

The idea of not making the playoffs at all when this many things go right, inconceivable, and thats what Woody learned today, even in the best of circumstances being a Jets fan means they will find a way do the inconceivable, and in the most excruciating fashion imaginable for Woody. Its downright cruel the way this ended for Woody.

SO WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

In the MOTHER OF ALL NIGHTMARE SCENARIOS for Woody Johnson, the coach he fired was all that stood in his teams way on their road to the playoffs on the final weekend, and this after he already beat Woody's team and his new HC at MetLife Stadium, and Woody had to watch in horror as the coach he fired swept his team, swept his new HC, and ended his season, and this despite the fact that the coach he fired had absolutely nothing to play for this week other than sticking it to his former team, and OH BROTHER did he ever stick it.

Somewhere Woody is muttering to himself tonight, did that really @#$%&@# happen?

Did I really watch my team go down in flames at the hands of the coach I just fired?

HTF did it end THAT WAY, how did everything that was so good end in the worst way humanly possible?

NOW YOU GET IT, WOOD MAN ... NOW YOU ARE OFFICIALLY ONE OF US.

what happens next is we continue to build upon the success we had this season...

we turnover the roster, and get younger, faster, and with the experience and success we had this season we should be able to compete immediately at a high level next season out the gates... we should be able to take the league by storm and own the season, but this time finish what we started this year...

I also believe that next year we could be seeing all the records that Marshall, Decker, and even Fitzpatrick broke this year do it again but with more oomph...

we need to sit back and allow our new regime to review the tape of the season and review each individual on this team to see who should stay and who doesn't belong... let them restructure some contracts to open up cap space, and then let them search free agency for key additions while we enjoy the combine and read player news on pro days, etc. heading to what could be an important draft...

GMF,

I wish I shared your optimism for next year, but a lot that went right this year can easily go wrong next year.

For one thing, we had one of the weakest schedules in the NFL this year, next year we play the NFC West, significantly stronger than the NFC East, and a much stronger AFC Division than the AFC South.

For another thing, we had good luck with significant injuries to key players this year. In that regard we were one of the healthiest teams in the league. Its hard to repeat that kind of good fortune two years in a row.

Lastly, we had the best weather at our home games, road games too, that I can ever remember as a Jets fan. We didn't play one bad weather game at home all year, not even in December, and prior to today we didn't play one bad weather game on the road either. That is UNREAL for the AFC East and you are unlikely to see anything like it ever again, and if you saw the way the wind in Buffalo was effecting Fitzpatrick's passes today, knocking them down or slowing them down, so he completed barely over 40% of his passes today, you have to be alarmed because he's likely to see WAY MORE of those elements in 2016.

Thats just a few things off the top of my head, so there's no guarantee we are improving on 10-6 next year.

WE MIGHT, but it figures to be a lot harder in 2016 than it was in 2015, and a lot of things can go wrong.

This was a huge missed opportunity when all the stars were aligned in our favor, in a wide open AFC playoffs.

Even if we made the playoffs we probably weren't making much noise. Lets looks at some of our wins down the stretch. Miami was easy, but we struggled vs. Giants. We crushed Tenn., but struggled vs. Cowboys. Then we beat the Pats. We were consistently inconsistent from week to week like most teams. This loss was painful, but we had a great year and the team goes into next year with some momentum. 5 straight wins hasn't happened to the Jets often. I'm happy with this season just not today. I've moved on since there are way bigger things to worry about in the world. Hopefully we just keep getting younger. We did blow a huge opportunity, but there were no guarantees we could keep it up much longer. So getting to playoffs and losing in WC weekend would theoretically be worse than losing today because it would affect our draft position.

Dead on perfect with this thread and I couldn't agree more. You forgot to add in one more thing that is Ivory runs for 1000 yards finally. Which is something he couldn't do under Rex Ryan and never did as a pro period. Don't think you mentioned the fact that the offense broke a Jets record as a whole for the most yards in Jets history. The Jets have to get younger and faster at the most important positions (LB, CB and TE). This league is all about match ups and the Bills are just a match up nightmare for the Jets.

They are young, big, fast and explosive and the Jets just can't match that right now. They couldn't contain Tyrod Taylor, Sammy Watkins or their two young RB's. Fitz also helped lose that game. The weather conditions helped show his lack of arm strength and in accuracy issues. The Jets need a young, big armed, smart and accurate passing QB. Ofcourse they don't just fall off trees and just seems like the Jets arent meant to find one but hopefully that is not true under this regime. We may already have that QB in Petty and hopefully this coming season we find out. From game one and throughout the entire season.

To accomplish this they will probably have to break up the d-line. Get rid of one or two of the players and hopefully one of them doesn't have to be Mo Wilkerson. The o-line needs some adjustments also but not much. They played very well together this year. This was such a gut wrenching and heart breaking season. Haven't felt this bad since the 98 season. The Jets were the better team that over the Broncos just like the Jets were the better team over the Bills and both times we lost. 2011 lose to the Steelers was very frustrating also, I thought they were the better team as well.

Sad part about all of this being that this is a game of match ups, if the Jets did make the playoffs they probably would have made some noise. The Jets match up well against the all those teams IMO. Maybe I'm missing something right right in my thinking but I think they match up well against all the AFC playoff teams. None of the teams have running QBs and really dont seem to be explosive offensively. Except the Steelers ofcourse because if the Jets were in then the Steelers would be.

AS TCT points out we were inconsistent... we need to get younger and faster on D and the OL needs help...IMHO RT needs to be replaced ..Brick's replacement needs to be found also .... changes are coming hopefully for the better.

One think that needs to improve is ST - maybe coaching - and the punter needs to go.

Sure hope you're right. But when Rex brought us to 2 AFC Champ games in a row, what I was thinking after the second loss was that things are going to keep getting better now and pretty soon we will get back the 'Bowl and win it again...

yea there was a difference between the nucleus of this team to that team for Rex... They paid free agents to win now, and they did get us as far as they could but the inexperience and issues on the offensive didn't have enough to propel us the rest of the way...

now we have a veteran QB, that is very in tuned to the offensive game plan and has weapons at his disposal to utilize... Is this team complete on offense, no but there is building blocks in place to have a football regime now in place to bring the best out of this entire team... our defense has some turnover coming this off season between cap causalities and need for speed at linebacker... continue to fix special teams by bringing in key contributors that are solid role/ spot starters that won't be the hiccup or cause of why the team falters...

Todd Bowles is a great motivator not only to the players but to his coaching staff... He is an even keeled person in front of the cameras and when dealing with the media conference calls... He isn't much different behind the scenes but he can ramp up to a point to show how displeased or whatever he thinks the team needs from him to motivate them and just because of this alone his demeanor will help propel us to continue our great rookie season with him at the helm...

Again just my opinion but if you look at everything in a whole you can see where I am coming from...

Thanks for the extra details on why you have confidence. I always think confidently about the future of the Jets though, so I need to think of reasons not to go overboard. It's nice to see though that there may be some good objective reasons for confidence. Of course, on the minus side is the fact that our draft position is lower because of the 10 wins. Hope there is someone good to draft once we pick. Maybe a Gronk-style TE?

we have been searching someone to step up and take that 3rd WR role but had to be someone to take the outside role with Eric Decker moved inside by Chan Gailey... Devin Smith is at least a full season removed before he really can compete on this level... Chris Owusu has so much athleticism and potential but his durability I can not watch him be killed with another concussion... As for Thompkins he is still a project and could get a training camp/preseason invite but not sure where or if he can make it... Jeremy Kerley is as good as gone this off season leaving us with:

WR 1 Brandon Marshall
WR 2 A Must Find (FA, Trade or Draft)
WR 3 Slot Eric Decker
WR 4 KR/PR (Same as above: FA, Trade or Draft) Would love to try to get Codarrelle Patterson from the Vikings...
WR 5 Open competition: Thompkins is one (could sign another FA, again Trade or Draft for competition)
WR 6 possibly start the season on PUP list (Devin Smith)

So for me with that 20th overall selection Baylor WR and former team mate of our now rookie QB Bryce Petty - Corey Coleman has to be a real consideration for that pick... Again this is my early diagnosis of the big board right now... Coleman is recovering from hernia surgery but is expected to make a full recovery and to me is the best receiver in this draft some could say Tredwell is better but to me not for what we need... Also am aware he isn't the typical size Chan Gailey likes but this kid can catch, is a playmaker and will be respected by defenses leaving one of the three Marshall, Decker or himself open on every passing play...

GMF I agree

What did we get ourselves into? it is not the Jets that are the problem it is the Jet fan or should I say many of them.

Why all the Doom & Gloom. You think we just elected the president for a third term.

Folks this is fun! We are building! We are growing.....My god you think we are the Cubs....in fact cub fans are better than this.

Lets be positive I am proud being a Jet fan if no one else is I am.

You think we just got sucked into a black hole.

Again this should be fun folks. Yes we can complain about things but why complain all the time.......

This is the NFL anything can happen the 67 jets had 16 knee injuries ...maybe we would have won back to back SB.s

The Cards could have won last year until they lost 50% of the team

You need to be at the top of your game every year. as they say 31 other teams are trying to win every year

The Jets were 8-3 with Favre and didn't make the playoffs. To me, that's a pretty big SOJ year, by that standard. So I wouldn't say this is Woody's first.

Way, way too much is being put into 60 minutes than into the entire body of work of a season.

Agree. I think Fitz was on a once in a lifetime run, and I am afraid the Jets will think he can do that again, but our schedule is brutal next year and we have too many holes to adequately plug in one offseason. Lots of amazingly critical decisions to be made that will shape us for the next 2-3 years. Bowles is definitely a "veteran" guy so he will likely delay going to a young QB too long. I think we take a step, possibly a big one back next year, which I am OK with if there is a solid long term plan to improve. Very very key offseason.
