NY Jets Receiver Room Looking Forward 2022: Denzel Mims

This was considered one of the weakest positions on the roster, with a lot of questions surround third year man Denzel Mims as one of the main questions this off season. From the outsiders stand point he looks to be a bust after a disastrous second year campaign.

In turn for all those who truly pay attention, Mims struggles were more off the field then on. Meaning his bout with food poisoning where he dropped slightly over 20 pounds of body weight put his health in jeopardy at that. He missed most of the offseason practices as he dealt with the severe effects. He vomited for two weeks and required antibiotics because of an intestinal infection. He didn't say where he ate the salmon (he wasn't asked), but a source said it was served in the Jets' cafeteria. His weight plummeted from 217 to 191, such a dramatic decline that he's only back to 208 after two months of healthy eating.

Heading into the season as Denzel was trying to regain his body mass lost while adding muscle mass and get into football shape which is unlike what normal deal with day to day, his immune system was at that point irreparable and led to him to getting sick with Covid 19. In his own words:

"Took two weeks for me to get over COVID and then it took another week to get back into shape, get my wind back and stuff like that," Mims explained. "This week was the first week for me to be back on the field. I feel like things went good this week, I feel like had a good week of practice. Just gotta keep preparing myself for Sunday."
Last year was horrible for almost everyone from Head Coach Robert Saleh missing a game due to Covid among nearly the entire roster dealt with either contracting Covid or being in contact with someone who was positive. It seems fans are more okay with Joe Flacco not being vaccinated then Denzel Mims being dealt a bad hand. He was drafted in the second round, a play making deep threat style receiver that when this regime came in wanted him to learn his position and all they need him to be. It is like a train running 100 mph hitting a brick wall and then asked to get back on another track and expected to go 100 again it is impossible.

This off season Denzel has a receiver's coach, believe he is still looking for a chef in the Dallas area to improve his nutrition intake while he continues to max his body muscle mass, work with fellow teammates and dive into being his best self which means the best football player he can be with his team mates. There is video and photos of him working out in Arizona with Zach Wilson, Elijah Moore, Jeff Smith, and DJ Montgomery. There also reports of him communicating with Corey Davis. He has been through his agent and other people sending video updates to the Jets front office specifically Joe Douglas to show he is bought 100% and expects to compete for an ample role heading towards the 2022 season.

So if Denzel comes into training camp fit, with a good grasp of the playbook and all the vital roles that the receiver group is expected to understand could he steal the No. 4 role on the offense? The team is said to be interested in drafting not only one but two receiving options end of this month in the 2022 NFL Draft. Who fits the role they are seeking to fill is anyone's guess at this point but there are so many wants and guesses by Jets fans.

In the end, players can only do what is expected of them from the team and hope they have taken the proper steps to further their skills and understanding of what teams expect of them. From all reports is Denzel is above the curve and ready to compete for 2022. A win would be 40 receptions on the season, because he is considered more of a deep threat then an average of 15 yards per reception would be considered acceptable. Understand the goal is minimal and as long as he is healthy should be a target goal for this season. Anything more is considered gravy.

I feel for Mims. I really do, but results count. He has to come in ready to go and up to speed. If he can do that and wins a position in TC great. I am all for a guy already on the roster stepping up and solving a problem rather than trade for someone else's.

Exactly.

He's been a big disappointment @ WR.

Food poisoning and Covid are two excuses for him having 0 Career TDs throughout his first two years (because he's earned a lot of playing time on the Football field and imo he's been a big time disappointment).

WR 1: Elijah Moore.
WR 2: Drake London or Garrett Wilson.
WR 3: Corey Davis.
WR 4: Braxton Berrios.

(I just don't see any room for Denzel Mims anymore, outside of a #5 WR).
😎
Maybe if you took off those dark glasses you might be able to see better. And not just about Mims .
