well a knee sprain can still keep a player out for a month or so. so i wouldn't just shrug it off as "just a sprain" and think the player is in the clear.

however, i highly doubt a player just diagnosed with a torn ACL and facing surgery would be standing on the sidelines during practice, let alone be there without crutches. so to that end, i take it as "good news"
Oh yeah, I don't mean "just a sprain" to suggest its no big deal. Indeed a sprained MCL can cost you a month or more. I just meant that its good news if its not a season ending injury like a torn ACL, which a lot of us feared.

If Barnes is ahead of Reilly at OLB, that might be a bad omen for Trevor

Pace, Babin, Mauldin, Barnes, Reilly might be fighting for 3 spots

Sounds like Bowles was rotating OLBs today and both Barnes and Reilly were getting reps with the 1s. I am not taking it to mean Barnes is ahead of Reilly. Suddenly OLB has become awfully thin, with the loss of IK, and now injuries to Pace & Mauldin. Hopefully neither is serious and they are both ready to go for the opener.

I just watched Bowles press conference and I'm satisfied that its a sprain for Mauldin and not an ACL or something season ending. Bowles was asked directly if Mauldin had an MRI and he said yes.

Next he was asked if its an ACL or MCL, I couldn't distinguish which (poor audio), but he reiterated its just a sprain, he's out for the Giants, and we'll see if he can go in the last preseason game. I don't think that would even be a possibility if it was something severe, so we might have dodged a bullet.

Are we sure Bowles was not just being intentionally vague about Mauldin's "sprained knee", you know, Belichick'esque, intentionally avoiding specifics and degree, or can we breathe easy that its not something major and indeed "just a sprain?"

I ask because Bowles seems to have a little Belichick in him when it comes to revealing injuries.

Well he did say Mo's hammy was a tweak and that turned into a 3 week tweak!!

With the type of injuries that he is referring to there isn't a whole lot to be gained from trying to be specific. Hamstrings and sprains are very unpredictable as we are seeing from Wilkerson.

Well, I suppose what we're talking about isn't that his injury is unpredictable, but that is was shrugged off despite being more serious.
The coach could have said he tweaked his hammy and we're going to be extra careful over the next 2 games to ensure he doesn't re injure it for the regular season. Instead he insinuated that it was nothing, take a practice I'd l off and be back.

Ravaged may be a bit harsh IMO.

Richardson and Smith's loss to the team were caused by their own immaturity and stupidity. If you look at all 32 teams, they have had similar and worse levels of TC injury.

The Midgets are out of RBs, the Pats WRS and so on down the line

Other than Allen, none of that list is gone for the season

Just my opinion and maybe I'm being to Pollyanna about things

Minor injury for Jets’ Jace Amaro is becoming real issue

Minor injury for Jets’ Jace Amaro is becoming real issue
Jace Amaro

Jace Amaro hopes to be ready for the start of the regular season, but the Jets second-year tight end also wants to be 100 percent and admits his sprained left shoulder remains painful.

What at first he thought was a minor injury has lasted far longer. Amaro landed awkwardly on the shoulder in the team’s preseason opener, against the Lions, and hasn’t practiced since.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said he doesn’t expect him back on the practice field anytime soon, which further makes the tight end’s return by the Sept. 13 opener, against the Browns, seem like a long shot. On Monday, Amaro said he hopes to play in the preseason finale, against the Eagles, yet the shoulder remains an issue.

“Every day it’s been getting better. It’s just a really slow process,” said Amaro, who had 38 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns in a disappointing rookie season. “I really can’t lift my arm up all the way very quickly and rapidly the way I want to yet. … It just takes time.

“It’s just frustrating. I just want to get out there and be able to play.”
Bowles has referred to Damon “Snacks” Harrison as an auctioneer in training, which the defensive tackle doesn’t mind. He likes to chirp.

“That’s something I’ve always done. Now I’m a little more boisterous. I’m just trying to get guys going,” Harrison said. “I tell Coach Bowles and anybody on the offensive line, until they shut me up [with their play], I’ll keep talking.”

Harrison has a special nickname for Leonard Williams, whom some call Big Cat.

“I call him the Little Kitty,” Harrison said. “He doesn’t like it. He’s a rookie. What can he do? He has to learn to like it, because he has another year before I stop calling him that.”

Linebacker Calvin Pace left practice with a groin strain, but there was no immediate update on its severity. … Bowles ruled out rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin (sprained knee) for Saturday’s game against the Giants. … Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (hamstring) practiced for the second straight day. After taking reps with the second team in drills, he got most of his work in with the first team on Monday. … Bowles said it is unlikely rookie wide receiver Devin Smith (broken ribs) will be ready for the regular-season opener. … Backup quarterback Matt Flynn (hamstring) is unlikely to play Saturday, against the Giants, despite taking part in positional drills the last two days. … The Jets signed tight end Matt LaCosse and waived defensive lineman Davon Walls.

Training Day

Way to Cro’!

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie enjoyed one of his best practices of camp, picking off a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass and also breaking up a slant intended for Eric Decker. It’s about time the veteran woke up.

Hit the Deck’

Decker struggled through an uneven day. While he did catch a touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick in team drills, he also had a few drops, including a long pass down the right sideline in which he had Darrelle Revis beat and was unable to haul in another pass that was slightly behind him.

Caught my eye

Injuries are taking their toll on the team’s depth, forcing young and inexperienced players to get extra reps. With receivers Jeremy Kerley (concussion) and Devin Smith (ribs) out, Chris Owusu, Saalim Hakim and DeVier Posey have seen plenty of time with the first and second teams. The same goes for offensive tackle and safety, where injuries to Ben Ijalama (knee) and Antonio Allen (Achilles) have hurt.

Injury report

Outside linebacker Calvin Pace left practice with a strained groin. Rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin (sprained knee) didn’t practice. Neither did quarterback Geno Smith (jaw) or tight end Jace Amaro (sprained left shoulder), but both were out stretching and in the rehab area during practice for the first time since getting hurt.

actually, Bowles said that Wilkerson had an MRI, and it came back clean. he also said that they were going to be cautious with him. Mo, said that he suffered a slight setback while preparing for his return. not sure I see anything wrong with what Bowles said from the start.

FLORHAM PARK — For a couple hours most days in the spring, Trevor Reilly stared at the screen in front of him, studying the experts of his craft.

Cameron Wake, Mario Williams, Elvis Dumervil.

What makes them great? How do they place their hands when an offensive tackle tries to block them? What's their primary pass-rush move? What's their counter move in case that initial move fails?

PLUS: Darryl Slater's Jets 53-man roster projection and analysis, version 3.0

Reilly hoped to find something, anything, in this film of Wake, Williams, and Dumervil that might help him make the Jets' roster in 2015 — and let him continue providing for his growing family back in Utah.

"I'm not saying that I compare to those guys," Reilly said. "I'm just trying to learn from things that they have."

The Jets drafted Reilly in the seventh round last year. He made the 53-man roster and appeared in 14 games, primarily on special teams. He got 60 snaps on defense while working as a traditional outside linebacker in the base defense.

This year, new coach Todd Bowles is asking Reilly to rush the quarterback more than last year, perhaps because Bowles sees Reilly as a candidate to be a situational pass rusher, in third-down/nickel package schemes.

But Reilly is also a reserve strong-side linebacker. And with the top two players at that position hurt — Calvin Pace (groin strain) and rookie Lorenzo Mauldin (knee sprain) — Reilly could see more action in Saturday night's third preseason game, against the Giants.

It would be a huge opportunity for Reilly, as he tries to show Bowles that he's worth retaining. Reilly has a week and a half — and two preseason games — left to prove himself with this new coaching staff. The Jets must trim their roster to the final 53 on Sept. 5.

"I've got a shot," Reilly said. "I have talent. I can do some things on the field. So hopefully, they see fit to keep me around."

If the Jets do, Reilly can credit his offseason routine, which he tailored to improve his pass rushing, since he knew his role would change in 2015. He said most successful pass rushers have just two moves — the primary move, and the counter. Reilly is currently narrowing down the two moves he'll use in games.

Reilly said one of his better primary moves is a "long arm" technique. It's a baiting move. Reilly sticks one of his arms out, inside the blocker's extended arms, enticing the blocker to shove his hands toward Reilly. Then Reilly swings his other arm, to swat away the blocker's hands.

Reilly's reliable counter move is a "convert to power," he said. If the offensive tackle or tight end happens to latch onto Reilly, then Reilly leans in and attempts to drive him back into the quarterback. Of course, this requires Reilly to get into the backfield, close to the quarterback.

Through two preseason games, Reilly has looked like a disruptive pass rusher at times. Against the Lions, Reilly had two quarterback hits, according to Pro Football Focus. Against the Falcons, he accumulated two quarterback hurries. In practices, Reilly has gotten consistent backfield penetration on pass and run plays.

"I'm rushing the passer better," Reilly said. "I took it as personal this year in the offseason and in my workouts to get more explosive, and to use my hands better. It's paying off right now a little bit. If you ask anyone who rushes the passer, using your hands is one of the biggest things, if not the biggest thing that you can improve on every day."

Earlier in training camp, Bowles praised the explosive speed with which Reilly bursts out of his pass-rushing stance. But the coach said he wanted to see Reilly use his hands more, "instead of shouldering himself off the blocks."

Reilly has to use his speed and technique, because at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, he's not as bulky as Pace (6-4, 265) or Mauldin (6-4, 259).

After establishing himself on special teams last season, Reilly's improvement with his increased pass-rushing duties this summer has only bolstered his belief that he belongs in the NFL. He never saw himself as a seventh-round pick. (He likely fell in the draft because of his two right knee surgeries while at Utah.)

"I thought, honestly, I was a steal in the seventh round," Reilly said. "I thought I was more of a fourth- to fifth-round guy. I thought I should've been drafted higher. I think that helped me during the season last year, having that chip on my shoulder."

Because Reilly served a two-year Mormon mission in Sweden before he played college football, he is old for a second-year NFL player. He will turn 28 in January. So his earning window in the NFL his smaller than most.

Last season, he made about $476,000, including his signing bonus. If he makes the 53-man roster this year, he will earn $510,000. (Reilly also is eligible for one of two "veteran exception" spots on the Jets' 10-member practice squad.)

"I've got bills to pay, man," Reilly said. "I've got mouths to feed."

Reilly and his wife, Jessica, recently had a son, Jett, whom they named after Reilly's late younger brother. (When Reilly was 13, and Jett was 6, Jett died in a child-sized motorcycle accident.) Reilly's latest addition gives him three children. His daughters, Nelli and Shayn, are 4 and 2. Shayn is a kidney cancer survivor.

"She's never really out of the dark, but she'll be fine," Reilly said.

Back home in Utah, Jessica and the kids await the announcement of the Jets' final cuts. Will they again join Reilly in New Jersey, like they did last year? Or will they have to find a new NFL home, if he gets cut?

So much of their next step depends on how Reilly makes his next move — a hand swat here, a power rush there, as he sweats through the details that will determine his future.

Hopefully it's just a body to replace for the Giants game. Has any update been made on Pace's injury?

Thats my take on it -- with Pace and Mauldin banged up, we need a body at LB for this weekend. I doubt he is still on the roster after cuts are made on the 1st -- or maybe he gets a few extra days if we need him for game 4.

Well I hope your right, but I really wanted to see Devin Smith bring something to the offense, and was hoping Amaro stepped up. Time will tell, stinks that Milliner got hurt too. Very close to being a huge bust simply because he can't stay healthy.
