At the end of the day this is the QB situation we have been handed. Until Petty is ready, we will continue to struggle at QB. I will just hope for the best.

Pennington lacked accuracy after the surgery and couldn't make all the throws either.
Pennington was deadly accurate if you kept the throws in his range. His accuracy ratings for the short to intermediate passes were always at or near the top of the league. Where his accuracy suffered was when you asked him to make throws he couldn't make, out patterns and deep balls, he didn't have enough arm to make those throws, and neither does Fitzpatrick. You can get away with that when facing poor defenses, but good defensive teams can really exploit a QB who is limited in what he can and cannot do. Thats why Chad always struggled verses the better defensive teams like Baltimore. You give a team like that a situation where they don't have to cover the whole field, and they will smother your offense.

Then let him play until November and then bring in Petty. Problem solved.
That actually might not be a bad idea. Ideally Fitzpatrick will play well early, well enough to keep us in the hunt, then by mid season we can switch to Petty when it becomes obvious that Fitz can't handle the elements. I just hope we don't wait too long to make the switch because he played well early and we're reluctant to sit him. Thats the problem, at that point, if he won enough games early, it won't be easy to pull the trigger, even though the early results will be FOOLS GOLD.

Fitzpatrick played pretty well in the cold weather in Buffalo. It colder in Buffalo than the Meadowlands. I'm hoping the early bye gives his arm renewed energy after the bye. Even though Bryce is a much better Athlete, it is a stretch to think he'll be ready this year. But we'll see. It is still preseason and a lot can happen.

If we wait until end of training camp or first week to sign a backup that will allow Petty to develop quicker, but it would also make it way harder for a veteran backup to pick up the offense and develop any type of chemistry. Catch 22.

I agree. My vote is to let Bryce be the backup if he continues to show improvement. Another thing I like about Bryce is he is a tough kid. He took a wicked shot against the Lyons and today he was running around in 90 deg weather like a kid.

I love ya Ham but you are acting like our choices were Ryan Fitzpatrick or Aaron Rodgers/Tom Brady/Drew Brees or Peyton Manning.

When the reality was Ryan Fitzpatrick or Geno Smith, the poor man's Rick Mirer

This was easy to see in the preseason game; but say what you want, on that pass to Cumberland, with any zip, the DB isn't even in the play. The way the ball flutters through the air "wide open WRs" will see DBs just miss diving tips all of the time. On Cumberland's play, he went from running wide open to an almost tipped pass...that is going to lead to drops. People will blame the WRs, but partial blame will go to no zip on his passes.

Also noticed the Pryor pick...guess we're going to get used to reading about turnovers from our first string offense more often. But it doesnt matter, its only practice.

well negative nancy all the good stuff they have been saying about fitz like the back to back td passes and this is the thing you comment on?

You talk about people's blind hatred for geno but you do the same with fitz "pot meet kettle"

LORHAM PARK — The Jets practiced Saturday for the first time since Thursday's preseason-opening loss at the Lions.

Coach Todd Bowles had some things to say afterward about tight end Jace Amaro's shoulder sprain and what he thought of the Lions game film. (He didn't think much of it.)

PLUS: Antonio Cromartie says Roger Goodell 'making his own rules up' with Tom Brady suspension

Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson talked to reporters on Saturday, at long last, as he continues to nurse a hamstring injury that is sidelining him again.

Here are 11 other things we noticed during and after Saturday's training camp practice:

1. Injury update. These guys didn't practice Saturday: Amaro (shoulder), Wilkerson (hamstring), wide receiver Chris Owusu (concussion), inside linebacker Erin Henderson (knee), and tight end Steve Maneri (hamstring). The following players returned to practice after missing the Lions game: cornerback Curtis Brown (hamstring), safety Jaiquawn Jarrett (shoulder), and receiver T.J. Graham (hamstring). Safety Marcus Gilchrist just got the wind knocked out of him in Saturday's practice, so his situation wasn't as bad as it initially appeared.

2. Bryce Petty's ups and downs. He's the second-string quarterback for now, after the whole Geno Smith broken jaw/punch in the face thing. Petty had mixed results Saturday. Remember, he's a long-term project. On the positive side, he rolled right to escape pressure and found DeVier Posey along the sideline. Petty also made a nice deep sideline throw to Austin Hill, who beat Keon Lyn. But in a 7-on-7 drill, Petty almost threw an interception to linebacker Jamari Lattimore. The ball went through the hands of Lattimore, who has several near picks in camp. (Lattimore did secure a pick of Ryan Fitzpatrick in an earlier camp practice.) Petty did throw a pick on Saturday, to Marcus Williams in a team period.

3. Bowles on Petty. Here's what the coach had to say about his rookie quarterback: "It's a work in progress, but he's getting more confident in seeing everything, so it wasn't a bad day overall." Bowles said Petty must improve with "just understanding the defense, recognizing where to go with the football, commanding the game, having better clock presence." He also has to work on recognizing the "mike" linebacker, and the defensive coverage, and on setting his blocking scheme, Bowles said. Translation: Petty has a long way to go, and the Jets still have no intentions of playing him this season.

4. Antonio Cromartie burned. The veteran cornerback is not having a great camp. Yes, he picked off Jake Heaps in a team period Saturday. But Cromartie was also flagged for holding Brandon Marshall on a crossing pattern. And Marshall burned Cromartie late in practice with an inside-out move in a red-zone period. Marshall caught a touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick on the play. The Jets better hope Cromartie can cover more capably when it matters. After all, the Jets aren't going to be facing a bunch of Jake Heaps this season.

5. Trevor Reilly's penetration. The second-year linebacker continues to get consistent backfield pressure on both passing and rushing plays. He's going to make it a very hard decision for the Jets to cut him, though he is eligible for the practice squad, if the Jets want to go that route, and risk him being claimed by another team off waivers.

6. Jeremy Kerley with starters. The slot receiver worked with the first unit as an outside receiver. He had gotten precious little time with the starters earlier in camp. Kerley made an amazing, leaping grab in the corner of the end zone during a red-zone period, but he was ruled out of bounds. Kerley later made an excellent sideline catch (this one counted) with Darrin Walls tightly covering. A very good day for Kerley, as he got a lot of work the starters and backups.

7. Shaq Evans' mixed results. The second-year receiver is fighting for a roster spot, just like Reilly is. Evans had two drops Saturday, but one was on a really low ball from Fitzpatrick. Evans also extended his hands nicely, on another pass, to make a catch, after he beat Walls.

8. Stevan Ridley still out. The running back remains on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from ACL and MCL tears. It seems entirely possible, at this point, that he will start the regular season on the PUP list, which means he would have to miss the first six games. But Bowles did say Ridley could come off the PUP list next week or in "the next couple of weeks, depending on his cutting." Ridley is still working on his side-to-side running. "I've seen him run full speed straight ahead," Bowles said. "I've seen him make some cuts, but I haven't seen him make some cuts full speed when he can't think about it, when a there's a lineman there and he's got to jump cut and go to the other side."

9. Right guard update. Nothing has changed here. Willie Colon continues to get the first-team reps, with Brian Winters working on the second team. This appears to be Colon's job to lose. Oday Aboushi got first-team reps in the spring, but seems to be out of this competition. He worked Saturday as the second-team left guard. Bowles said he probably wants to see two more preseason games before he settles on a starter at right guard.

10. Reserve offensive lines. This was the second-string line on Saturday, from left to right: Ben Ijalana, Aboushi, Wesley Johnson, Winters, and Brent Qvale. This was the third-team group: Charles Brown, Dakota Dozier, Dalton Freeman, Jarvis Harrison, and James Brewer. Dozier struggled Thursday in the preseason opener and is battling for his roster spot. Dozier was one of 12 draft picks that former Jets general manager John Idzik made in 2013. Seven remain with the organization, but four are not locks to make the roster: Evans, Dozier, Reilly, and receiver Quincy Enunwa.

11. Picks and drops. Calvin Pryor (the Jets' first-round pick in 2013) picked off Fitzpatrick in 7-on-7s, and tight end Jeff Cumberland had yet another drop, also in 7-on-7s. Cumberland's hands haven't been great in this camp. Far from it, in fact.

Undrafted Barnes Impressive in Jets Debut
August 16, 2015 Featured Editorials, Home Slider Deion Barnes, Leger Douzable

inShare

By Glenn Naughton

There weren’t many bright spots in the Jets pre-season opening 23-3 loss to the Detroit Lions in which the Jets starting defense allowed two long scoring drives and no offensive personnel group managed to get the ball in the end zone for Gang Green.

Even still, the game wasn’t without any strong individual efforts for the Jets as undrafted free agent Deion Barnes had a solid showing in his pro debut.

A Penn State product, Barnes checks in at 6′ 4”, 255 lbs and was scooped up by the Jets immediately after the draft.

During his time at Penn State, the Philadelphia native earned some impressive accolades following a freshman year in which he posted six sacks and 10 tackles for loss. That production would slip the following season (2 sacks/4 TFL) before a junior-year resurgence.

Barnes matched his first-year total of six sacks while racking up another 12.5 tackles for loss, but it wasn’t enough to get him drafted.

Against the Lions however, Barnes got himself off to a solid start. Lining up on both the left and right sides of the formation, sometimes with his hand in the dirt and upright at others.

Barnes held up well at the point of attack and appeared to do a good job of tracking the ball-carrier while engaged with a blocker.

We saw several plays in which he was able to set the edge before disengaging and making a tackle, along with a few instances in which his pursuit in traffic was solid.

Barnes was credited with three tackles in the limited action he saw, as well as a hit on the quarterback on a play that saw him come across the line unblocked, missing the sack by a split second.

A quick glance at PFF.com’s player ratings for the contest confirmed what we saw on film. Barnes tied veteran Leger Douzable for the top-graded Jets player in the front-seven.

It’s not a name we’ve heard much of throughout camp, but it was an impressive debut for the rookie defender who will look to build on an impressive showing when the Jets take on the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night.
