Of our current OL Free Agents which one(s) should be retained if any?

A lot people are torn on where Kelvin Beachum should be with the team's future a great person but a sub par left tackle at this stage in his career... A one year deal would only be in place if he is the backup, but his veteran leadership would be great for the locker room only if he is the starter have to wonder if he will be still this great team mate if he is regulated to backup duties...

Re-sign Beachum 1 year deal and let him know he is the starter entering the season but may not stay the starter for the whole season depending on the rookie or FA drafted/signed needs to get up to speed to take the job...

Brandon Shell, Ryan Kalil, Alex Lewis, Tom Compton, Brent Qvale are all free agents this year so does anyone deserve to be retained and the answer is no... Conor McDermott is under contract for next season and he is a serviceable backup for all positions except center... He was the backup for left tackle spot but filled in at guard and did well... So of the five other unrestricted free agents maybe Brandon Shell may get a new contract along with Alex Lewis but nothing is guaranteed as all of them were awful this season and scrapping and redoing the entire line by signing free agents and drafting hopefuls may be the best chance to help this area of the team...

So as of right now the Jets have 3 OL under contract for next season:

Chuma Edoga (Tackle?)
Jonotthan Harrison (Center)
Conor McDermott (Tackle? - Guard?)

Remember how bad we were when Beachum was out and Edoga was playing LT? Sure we need to replace Beachum, but we can only lose any of these guys when we know we have their replacements in hand. There is a shortage of good OL, and any in free agency will have the choice of moving to a more successful franchise.

I firmly believe that all of those I highlighted can and should be, pretty easily because of their poor performance, REPLACED. Beachum does a decent job at LT. He's not as good as we need to be at that position so your plan for him suits me perfectly.

I firmly believe the GM could hit a home run by doing three things which would repair short term while investing long term not only into the ability of the OL but into the success for the offense...

Dru Samia is listed as the third string guard behind former Jet Dakota Dozier, so they may be interested in swinging for a deal for our veteran Brian Winters even if it is giving up player for player trade including their this year rookie Samia for Winters this off season...

I do believe Edoga has talent but not for either tackle position, at least not yet... He may do better inside and moving him to left guard would better serve the team and his career...

Drafting a RT in the 2nd either Trey Adams from Washington or Mekhi Becton from Lousiville
Drafting a LT in the 3rd round (2nd 3rd round pick) Charlie Heck from UNC
Drafting a OC in the 4th round Matt Hennessey from Temple

The Jets could enter next season with Beachum at LT, Edoga at LG, Harrison at OC, Samia at RG, either Conor McDermott or FA at RT
Allowing all three rookies to develop at their own pace not saying they can not win the job day one but no rush to put them into the fire immediately...

If not Samia, guarantee the Jets will look to retain Lewis or try to acquire a familiar face that JD used to deal with in Philly like Halapoulivaati Vaitai who is a RT who can kick inside to RG...

Heck has the technical attributes to be a long term answer at LT...
T. Adams has some versatility and be able to become a mainstay on the right side...
We need another Mauler at the center position and Temple's Matt Hennessey is that, plus a scholar so he is smart...

I think Hennessey would be a good addition. He's quite talented and built for the position. Plus, he would probably love being here with his brother.

I would honestly be surprised if Becton is there in the second. He seems like a guy who by virtue of his physical skills will move up the board between the combine and the draft.

Resign Beachum and Lewis. Move Edoga and Shell inside and draft a mauler at RT. I always thought Shell could play inside...... he is a better run blocker than a pass blocker.

How about sign Bill Callahan, let him watch the tape and maybe he can decide if some of our guys are workable . However at the least we need to acquire 2 OL from the draft and 1 from FA.

Callahan is a great OL coach. The thing is, we have a very good OL coach already. Frank Pollack coached some very good OL play in Dallas.

The problem here was not the coaching. It was the talent. Maccagnan did not invest much in the line, and it showed.

Do we not expect one of the top left tackles to be available at 11?.

The line needs to be built through the draft and then we need to retain the good ones. Getting a top free agent to come here most likely means greatly overpaying

Not likely. 3 are projected to go before we pick and 2, Jackson and Leatherwood have decided to forgo the draft and return to school. Top RT Tristan Whirfs still has not declared and may go back to Iowa for another season also. May be looking at the second round to draft a tackle.

So what you're saying is we didn't suck enough

Usually we luck out and the best player falls in our lap so that will probably happen again

Problem is once the player falls to us he then immediately forgets how to play football

If there is a run on OTs then presumably the guys available to us in the second round will be third round talents. Not much better than Edoga and Shell. Sounds like there is a danger we end up with basically the same guys who weren't good enough this year and last year. And you said elsewhere that next year we have to make a decision on Darnold. How will we do that without a decent line?

There are alot of o lineman in the draft. Upgrading the interior will vastly improve the line and a FA or two will be options. The key is signing players who fit the blocking scheme. Osemele for instance struggled in a similar scheme in Oakland, which is why some of us knew the trade was doomed when made.
Darnold needs to see the D faster. He has the 31st slowest release behind only Jacoby Brissett. Even when there's no pressure, the ball is slow to come out.
6 of the 10 playoff QBs were sacked more than Darnold. 1 Tannehill was sacked once less. 4 were still alive today,1 is already headed to the NFC championship.
Darnold has to also improve his footwork. He rarely throws from a solid base which is the cause of his deep and intermediate accuracy struggle. If you rewatch some games with an open mind, you will see the majority of free rushers and a large # of sacks came from him calling the wrong protection or the skill positions flat out missing blocks. If you search YouTube and search every Sam Darnold throw and/or every Sam Darnold TD and watch them with an open mind, you will see recievers wide open, having to stop and wait on a ball or have to adjust toward coverage to make a catch. The Jets ranked first in separation. Recievers were open. If Sam gets better/faster at reading the D,.shortens his release and fixes his footwork, he will make major strides. Fixing his throwing platform will grately improve his accuracy . That will be easy to see and evaluate.

Jackson returning to school hurts the LT class. Thomas and Wirfs will likely be gone. Two big questions may address the situation.

1. How far might Becton climb the board after the combine?
2. Is Wills a guy who teams see as a legit true LT on the NFL level?

Becton is a guy whom I'm interested in. Will be following him closely in the pre-draft evaluations. He might be considered by Douglas at 11, or better yet at late first if he can pull off trade down. My concern with Wills is that he only has been mentioned in the top group of OTs after both Leatherwood and Jackson decided to opt out of draft. Admittedly, i don't know much about him however.

I only see us signing Beachum as a solid back up while also resigning Lewis. Edoga, will round out the Subs and Harrison as next in line Center. Love to get something for Winters. We need to move up in the 2nd Rd or late 1st Rd. If we pass on a Offensive Lineman in the !st and either grab an Edge, CB, or WR

Edoga is under rookie contract, Harrison also under contract for next season...
Beachum will be likely re-signed but will be given the chance to start until or if we draft a new left tackle...

Still believe the Jets don't have to move from current draft order to fill needs... Stock piling by trading down is always welcome but the Jets can find starters for a couple of needs on day 3, not luck of the draw but doing due diligence in research as this group has been doing all this year while the actual team was stinking it up in the first 8 games of the season...

Will's is projected at RT. That's why he has been projected around 5th behind the true LTs. Whirfs, if he comes out is also projected to be a potential RT, many suggesting he may have to move inside to RG.
Becton is a true LT. If he shows up to the combine in shape, his stock will rise. He struggled to stay at or below 370 this season and went way above that weight last season.

1st round pick should be for either Edge or WR...

Trey Adams from Washington should be there with our 2nd Round selection...
Matt Hennessy brother of our Long Snapper Thomas Hennessy climbing the rankings should be there for our Giants (Leo) pick 3rd round...
With our 2nd third round can go one of three ways, the other way other we go in the first round or grab developmental left tackle...

Jets are believed to be enamored with two corner prospects that are late 5th early 6th round prospects...
Word also is the Jets like a tight end in this draft who may be a late 4th early 5th round option...
