Zach Wilson has all the tools to be an excellent quarterback. His deep ball accuracy is widely an unique attribute. This is the reason why Joe Douglas and Mike LaFleur fell head over heels with him during the draft process. The problem with the young signal caller is he is at his best improvising. This can be good and bad. As we witnessed thus far this season he can stack the statistics but moving the pocket does three things. Makes it nearly impossible for the entire OL to keep their blocks. The outside run lanes become non-existent and the RBs have no where to run because now the defenses because of Wilson are already playing wide to contain him. Third it puts him at risk of taking big and crucial hits, reason why he is injured right now.
Mike White is that traditional pocket quarterback that stands tall in the pocket and scans the field for the open target. Mike LaFleur made the reads easier as White had receivers running crisp short routes but as we seen his presumptive throws he forced by zipping it to the receiver before he made his cut, turning his head back to the QB. But as we witnessed as he settled down, his field awareness and spatial awareness became more relaxed and he hit targets that were open or he threw them open. A pocket QB doesn't improvise but uses his touch and zip on the ball to move the offense allowing the receiver(s) to catch n run... A pocket QB uses his eyes to move the defense.
Mike LaFleuir wanted to take those talented improvising gifts and deep ball accuracy but turn them into a cerebral pocket passer that can escape the pocket. But when the first instinct of an improviser is not to check down but escape the pocket to direct traffic and throw a home run every time, aka comparison to Aaron Rodgers. But Rodgers understands to take the short throws, to build momentum to take those deep shots. Eventually Wilson will learn. Maybe watching the game up in the suite gives him a different perspective from being under center.
Like the Bengals, Mike White should be able to dominate against the Colts. The following game, the Buffalo Bills then Miami Dolphins are key to this organizations growth and could determine how this team progresses. Offensively we are better with that pocket QB, opens up the run game, trickery and allows the defense to regroup and rest.
