Offensive Game Plan: Improviser versus Pocket QB

Zach Wilson has all the tools to be an excellent quarterback. His deep ball accuracy is widely an unique attribute. This is the reason why Joe Douglas and Mike LaFleur fell head over heels with him during the draft process. The problem with the young signal caller is he is at his best improvising. This can be good and bad. As we witnessed thus far this season he can stack the statistics but moving the pocket does three things. Makes it nearly impossible for the entire OL to keep their blocks. The outside run lanes become non-existent and the RBs have no where to run because now the defenses because of Wilson are already playing wide to contain him. Third it puts him at risk of taking big and crucial hits, reason why he is injured right now.

Mike White is that traditional pocket quarterback that stands tall in the pocket and scans the field for the open target. Mike LaFleur made the reads easier as White had receivers running crisp short routes but as we seen his presumptive throws he forced by zipping it to the receiver before he made his cut, turning his head back to the QB. But as we witnessed as he settled down, his field awareness and spatial awareness became more relaxed and he hit targets that were open or he threw them open. A pocket QB doesn't improvise but uses his touch and zip on the ball to move the offense allowing the receiver(s) to catch n run... A pocket QB uses his eyes to move the defense.

Mike LaFleuir wanted to take those talented improvising gifts and deep ball accuracy but turn them into a cerebral pocket passer that can escape the pocket. But when the first instinct of an improviser is not to check down but escape the pocket to direct traffic and throw a home run every time, aka comparison to Aaron Rodgers. But Rodgers understands to take the short throws, to build momentum to take those deep shots. Eventually Wilson will learn. Maybe watching the game up in the suite gives him a different perspective from being under center.

Like the Bengals, Mike White should be able to dominate against the Colts. The following game, the Buffalo Bills then Miami Dolphins are key to this organizations growth and could determine how this team progresses. Offensively we are better with that pocket QB, opens up the run game, trickery and allows the defense to regroup and rest.

I have a couple of points of disagreement:
"The outside run lanes become non-existent and the RBs have no where to run because now the defenses because of Wilson are already playing wide to contain him." If that is true, then the RBs should be able to cut it back to the inside which should be more open - and that does happen plenty with the Murrays and Jacksons, etc.

"...reason why he is injured right now." I believe his injury occurred after he released a pass from the pocket.

our running backs are speed rushers and thrive on outside runs...

Carter and Coleman are the only true RBs that can run up inside because of their patience...

Perine one would expect him to do as well but he is a slasher that runs better off tackle...

Ty Johnson has the ability to turn speed into power but is not a true physical power back that can hit the hole up the middle... Again he thrives on the outside as seen on his touchdown run down the sideline...

So don't get me wrong when the defenses are playing in the box it opens those outside rush lanes which our running backs thrive in... And facing a QB that is in the pocket 80% or better during a game will open those outside runs...

Proof is in the carries, stats prove my case as they are all better stretching off tackle...

correct me if i am wrong, but we have a zone blocking scheme, so there is stretching off tackle, because the tackle is stretching.
furthermore, the zone blocking scheme creates lanes for the between the tackles albeit the tackles are in different geographical spots from when the tackles lined up, because they are in motion.

also, i think it's a little premature to label Zach...or White for that matter.
White was the beneficiary of the rest of the team showing up for work, because they got beaten down.
White was the beneficiary of the OC being able to see things he was obstructed from seeing while Zach was playing.
*clearly plays were called because of layers of the D & depth of coverage which yielded open targets earlier in the unfolding of the play.
White was the beneficiary of seeing Zach play and how D's were playing he and LaFleur.
White was the beneficiary of the line holding blocks in the running game.

Zach might have a little too much Favre in him for my taste, but i am not ready to say he is nothing but an improviser.

remember what McGovern said about his slide protection with Wilson that extends the line's blocking assignments further outside and need to communicate to pass off defenders to each other while working in consortium with each other on those stunts but with a pocket passer it simplifies the area in which they have to block and it makes it easier to control the blocking assignments...

at same time opens up the run lanes to the outside now that the defenders are more focused in the box rather spread wide to protect against Wilson and his desire and need to escape the pocket...

Here is the best game that LaFleur called for Zach, and Zach's best execution...IMO, even though we won the TN Game.
* 100% of his completions.

He doesn't look like a hero baller to me when he can fire from the pocket.

what it appears to me is that the line played better yesterday, because the (1.) things opened quicker, because (2.) LaFleur saw the field better, and (3.) called quick hitters where we had spacing, so (4.) White got it out faster, and (5.) that made a member of the soon to be ex-jets look better.

short story...I wanna see Zach have that game called for him.

the stats don't like Mike White in 1 & 1/2 game(s) has almost 60% of the yards Wilson has in 5 & 1/2 games(s) they both have the same number of touchdowns but tell me this how many times did Mike White move the pocket to buy time? the run game fed off his ability to stay in the pocket and push the ball down the field, accurately...

I am not saying Zach can not be the guy what I am saying is this game plan is set up better for a player like Mike White and until Zach Wilson buys in to that idea of not moving the pocket but remain in the pocket to be that guy will he then develop into something special.

Wilson's mentality gives me pause, I see Manziel in him...

it's a chicken before the egg argument.

a.) get Zach's receivers to run in open swaths of grass like LaFleur did for Mike, and....
b.) Zach will hit them, and...
c.) the line isn't holding extended blocks, and...
d.) that that will open up the running game for Zach at the controls too.

Yesterday's success was 100% of the QB and the OC knowing where open spots on the field would be, seeing the open spots on the field, and hitting the receivers in those spots.

or...ML can go back to the sidelines, call plays not accounting for the depth of the coverage, and have his receivers blanketed like Zach's games; sarcasm intended.

Manziel was/is a chemical abusing waste of talent...and probably not very bright.
Zach is a football junkie.

no comparison.
