Offensive Line is completely offensive

Breaking down the talent across the line looks shabby at best, the newly signed Kevin Beachum is a nice addition but there is clearly no depth behind him... Spot starter, Ben Ijalana was re-signed but is he the right fit, he is a true swing tackle but if Beachum goes down we are arguably screwed... The only real option is not much of option is free agent prospect from South Carolina State's Javarius Leamon... The only problem with Leamon is he is far from ready, he has the size and length but his functional strength is less to be desired at this point in time... Javarius technique is also something of a mystery on where his development needs to focus on... Another signing in former Texan Jeff Adams more likely to see playing time at right tackle either in relief or spot situational role playing time... This leaves us with second year man Brandon Shell who has made strides in his overall game he still doesn't have the natural athleticism to fill in at left tackle if Beachum went down... The final option on the line is Brent Qvale but he is another mystery lineman because the coaching staff say they like him but he has no role with Ijalana the swing tackle...

So we know this Beachum and probably second year man Shell are the starting tackles, but who is guaranteed to make the final roster? Ben Ijalana have to assume but both Leamon and Adams could end up being a long-shot... Brent Qvale did show some promise when he kicked it inside to play guard, is this his new position? Curious when one can not say who is the starter and who is the backup... One thing is for certain this was the position group completely ignored again this year both in the draft and free agency...

The interior part of the line looks to be the anchor but like the tackle position the depth is limited... James Carpenter is a solid anchor at the left guard spot and re-signed Brian Winters looks to hold down his right guard position but who is going to be the backups for both guard spots... Can Brent Qvale be one piece the team could afford to go with Dakota Dozier as the other option... Wesley Johnson not only earned his second round tender last season but he is the only center on the roster right now which begs to differ where the team would go if he gets hurt... Winters and Dozier have limited experience playing center but then what? Is Jonothan Harrision the option here? If he can make it through training camp, preseason and stay healthy entering the season one could say he may be a viable option, too many what ifs... Is this the year that Craig Watts last year's wonder boy final earn a roster spot but do we need him is the main question since the interior line except for the center position is strong... The only other option is Donald Hawkins but since he is entering his fourth year he could likely qualify for the practice squad...

Depth Chart Possibility:
Left TackleKevin BeachumBen Ijalana
Left GuardJames CarpenterDakota Dozier
CenterWesley JohnsonJonothan HarrisonDakota Dozier
Right GuardBrian WintersBrent Qvale
Right TackleBrandon ShellJeff AdamsBen Ijalana

The starting five look like a decent enough starting group as long as they can stay healthy...

Well, like has been pointed out this draft was rather weak on OL talent. Mac was not shooting for depth guys or guys that are developmental, he was shooting for starters right off the bat. I don't think there were any of those in this draft besides say Ramczyk? But that would have required trading down and losing out on Jamal Adams.

It is what it is. I have come to accept that. The GM and HC want to go into this season almost no talent at QB and OL. The QB's will get their chance to impress and stick with the roster behind what I think will be a disastrous OL. In other words, those young QB's WILL get their shots?

Unless they do something in FA or with late cuts, this is our OL. It's been neglected very seriously and it's patchwork at best. They will need to play much better than they have in the past for the Jets to have a good season.

If it works out the way you and I think it will, the Jets will have a top 5 in the draft and will be choosing between QB and OL with their 1st round pick...........

If this OL stays healthy... Its a good OL.. and nothing in this draft was better than what we had..

I like the guard spots best on this team. As for tackles, there is more depth than inside, particularly if Qvale is more a tackle than a guard. I have concerns about both Beachum and Shell as high-end tackles, for different reasons. And I'm not as sold on Johnson at C as some others are.

I would not give the dire prediction that was given here. And the position group wasn't really addressed in the draft because the draft was simply not that good at OL, especially at tackles. So as is, I'd say this line is not offensive, it's just mediocre. And it could be a tick better than mediocre if Beachum stays healthy and both Shell and Johnson are legitimate.

Jets can still sign mangold. Next year we will either draft qb, or o line and cb. O line will continue to addressed in free agency since we will have 80 mil next year.

Good point Cuz. I think if nothing else shakes out they will (should?) resign Mangold. Of course that's only if he checks out physically. I think there were possibilities in round 4 to nab a starting, if not all-pro, center but Mac passed. That's what I'm most concerned about.
