The Pittsburgh Steelers are deserving of a playoff spot, but they aren’t guaranteed one. There are still several mind-numbing scenarios that could play out in the AFC, but none of that matters if the Steelers just win out.

Right now, Pittsburgh controls its destiny. If the teams win out, they’re guaranteed a playoff berth. Losing leaves things up to fate.

Last week, the Steelers lost to the Buffalo Bills, which further cemented Buffalo as the fifth seed. Pittsburgh clung to the sixth seed as the Tennessee Titans suffered a setback against Houston. However, both the Steelers and Titans are 8-6. Tennessee faces New Orleans next week and Houston again in Week 17.

Pittsburgh is walking a fine line between postseason contention and going home early. With the team slated to play in Baltimore in Week 17, Pittsburgh needs a bounce-back win against the New York Jets. And here are three bold predictions for that matchup.

The Jets have suffered their fair share of offensive setbacks in 2019. Just like the Cleveland Browns and Baker Mayfield, New York’s offense and Sam Darnold have not delivered on expectations. As a second-year player, Darnold still has plenty of room to grow, but this is a lost season.

New York throws for 196.6 yards per game, the fourth-fewest in the NFL. Granted, Darnold hasn’t started the whole season in New York. The USC product is averaging 240.2 yards per game and has not been held below 200 yards since Week 1 against the Bills. However, even when taking Darnold’s personal stats, things look grim for New York in Week 16.

Darnold has thrown 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season. Darnold also has a pedestrian 84.3 passer rating, reflecting on his uninspired play this year. Four of his interceptions came against the New England Patriots in Week 7. New England leads the NFL in interceptions. The Steelers are in second place.

Between New York’s struggles and Pittsburgh’s dominating defense, it’s hard to see Darnold having a positive outing. The Steelers are tied for the league lead in sacks with 49 and allow the third-lowest passer rating to quarterbacks. It seems like Darnold’s tough season will only get worse in Week 16.

The Steelers and Jets are on different tiers of the NFL hierarchy, but that doesn’t matter at this point in the season. Just look at how Atlanta beat San Francisco at Levi’s Stadium last week. Standing doesn’t matter late in the season, especially when a potential spoiler team like the Jets are involved.

Pittsburgh’s offense usually holds them back, but Hodges will make an inspired return to the field. The defense should have another dominant performance. So, how will this game even be close? Well, the Steelers don’t know how to put up one-sided victories, or losses for that matter.

In Pittsburgh’s last five wins, the point differential is only 26. That means fewer than four scores separate the Steelers from five losses. On the flip side, Pittsburgh’s last five losses came by 30 points, fewer than five scores.

The Steelers are not a very good team this season. Have played down to lesser opponents and like the Jets, fail to show up all too often. Jets at home, meaningless feel good win. √
Jets squeak out a close one and screw up draft position as always.

Jets at home,feel good

Yea but I think you'll see a blanket of yellow towels in the stadium

Not such a feel good for the home team

Jet fans

Or this ownership

Seems like ages ago we led the Bills 16-0 late in the 3rd

Yea I know poor Mosley and Sam had a sore throat

And there goes your season

Steelers on the 3rd string QB and are in a playoff spot fighting to get in

Jets are giving praise to Gase

Players are using the lack of jet fans for motivation based on today's player interviews.
Fans don't go, so that's what they should expect. ( I don't blame them)
Damn near every jet player who sees the field Sunday is playing for their next contract or auditioning for a job in the NFL next season. Not one is giving praise to Gase , or playing for him.
One more win vs the Bills wasn't doing anything for this season.
Again another late meaningless win....

I think we lose and I'm good with that. A win helps team morale but not our draft position. I would be happy though if we lose by 3 points or less and the game goes right down to the wire. That helps both.

We can decide if we want to go after Bud Dupree or re sign Jordan Jenkins.

I'll stick with Jenkins. He has 2 less sacks this year than Dupree but also has played 2 less games. Jenkins is a year younger and has improved every year. He is already familiar with with the Jets system and players. Nothing against Dupree but he's not really an upgrade over Jenkins so it just makes no sense to make the change unless Dupree will play for considerably less money.
