Didnt devin smith go on the pup list, not ir? So when he comes back, he doesnt count as the ir returning player.

Its really just semantics, sve. There are two different PUP's, one is the Active PUP list, for which you are still taking a roster spot, the other is the (injured) reserve PUP, which is essentially the IR, and for that you receive a roster exemption, but the player is not eligible to return until at least week six and no later than week eight or nine. Anyway, last week Devin Smith was moved from the active PUP to the injured reserve PUP, so his roster spot is officially exempted. We have not yet done likewise with Breno, perhaps Bowles was holding out hope for a better diagnosis that he will be ready before week six, but I suspect thats not the case and he will be moved to the IR/PUP as soon as today or tomorrow. We'll see?

HOWEVER, I think there was one rules change that allows you to bring back one player from the Reserve PUP prior to six weeks, but only one, so if you have more than one player on the IR/PUP, only one can comeback sooner than six weeks, the other must wait at least six weeks ... or something like that?

Anyway, we currently have the roster exemption for Devin, but NOT YET for Breno.

According to reports the change is that you don't need to declare which player you want to return from ir. You can now choose week 6 who to bring back, lay year you needed to decide at the time of designation.

1 player may return anytime after week 6.

I guess this list isn't being updated.

Ah so you can only bring one player back from the PUP/IR after six weeks, the other(s) have to stay on IR all year?

That explains the hesitation to place Breno on IR, then they can only get one back this year, Devin or Breno. If its Devin who comes back, you might as well release Breno because I think he's in the last year of his deal?

No, i believe the pup and ir lists are different and have different rules.

To be on pup, you cant have practiced since the beginning of training camp, and after the time period (i believe after week 6 or 8?) any number of those players can come back to the active roster. The big consideration being that they didnt practice at all during camp.

On the other hand, you can go onto ir at anytime. In the past, one player could be designated, at the time of injury, to be eligible to return. This year, there is no need to pre designate, so any ir'd player can come back, but only one.

So, if devin smith is pup'd, he doesnt count as your one ir eligible to return player.

Sve,

PUP is a preseason designation, it only applies to the preseason, once the regular season starts its just called season ending IR, there is no 6 to 8 Weeks IR, thats the Reserve PUP or IR/PUP that you can apply to players who never participated in training camp practices.

As for the preseason PUP, there are two different PUP's, one is the "Active PUP", so even if the player has not competed in practice, you are still designating him as an active player, therefore there is no roster exemption for that player. Until a few days ago that applied to Devin Smith, he was PUP, but he was "Active PUP". It was only a few days ago that he was officially moved from the "Active PUP" to the "Injured PUP", aka the IR/PUP, and thats the one that gives you a roster exemption for his spot, but now (unlike Active PUP's) he is no longer eligible to return until after six weeks.

Breno, OTOH, is still on the "Active PUP", so he is eligible to start practicing or playing at any time, even week one if he's ready, but there is no roster exemption for Breno ... unless he, like Devin, is moved to the "Reserve PUP", then you get a roster exemption, but then he is ineligible to return until after six weeks.

Thanks Sve

Just to be clear, so is there a roster exemption for the in-season PUP, if thats where Breno goes?
