Would you sign DeMario Davis to a contract? He is 29 and coming off of a good year (his best), but its his contract year (Muhammad Wilkerson). Will he take the money and regress back to his old self. there are options in the draft, especially if we have the opportunity to trade back and accumulate more picks.

Demario Davis finally had a season that he was drafted to have annually... In my opinion he hit his shelf year (career year) and for him it is once in a lifetime production... Not saying he couldn't repeat but his history shows he will fail more times than not and wouldn't pay him a big contract...

Okay with a two year deal where the guarantees are in the first year and lets us get rid of him without dead loss after the first... But anything more not worth the trouble...

[h=2]Will Jets Dip into D-Line Free Agency Pool?[/h] Jets Free Agents
UFA (2): Kony Ealy, Mike Pennel
RFA (1): Xavier Cooper
XRFA (1): Deon Simon

The Market
Notable Non-Edge-Rushing D-Linemen: Star Lotulelei (CAR), Sheldon Richardson (SEA), Dontari Poe (KC), Shamar Stephen (MIN), Bennie Logan (KC), DaQuan Jones (TEN), Kyle Williams (BUF), Brent Urban (BAL), Denico Autry (OAK), Tyrunn Walker (LRM), Haloti Ngata (DET), Beau Allen (PHI).

Synopsis

"Not For Long" indeed. A year ago, Jets fans were envisioning a defensive line of Leonard Williams, Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson dominating offenses for a few more seasons to come. But in September, Richardson was traded to Seattle for WR Jermaine Kearse, Williams and Wilkerson fought through nagging injuries much of the season, and Wilkerson was a coach's-decision DNP for the last three games.

Asked about Wilkerson's return to the Green & White in 2018, GM Mike Maccagnan said at season's end: "I'm not going to speculate on any particular player that's going to be on or off the team. ... Those things will work themselves out here before free agency."

Regardless of Wilkerson's status, the Jets may well be studying the free agency market for some non-edge-rushing plug-and-play linemen.

Steve McLendon was a solid contributor with 14 starts and unofficially a line-best 11.5 tackles in his second Jets season and he returns. But three contributing role players and first-year Jets could become free agents. Kony Ealy, the NFL's pass-rejecting star of the first half of the season, and Mike Pennel, an immovable force at times in the second half, can both become unrestricted FAs. Xavier Cooper, who had a knack for big plays in limited snaps after climbing aboard in Game 9, could be restricted.

The group available in free agency next month runs the gamut from young to old and big names to part-timers to Super Bowl performers.

Inside bodies include Star Lotulelei of the Panthers; former Chiefs two-time Pro Bowler Dontari Poe, who left Kansas City for Atlanta last year, and Bennie Logan, who migrated from Philadelphia to KC to replace Poe. The Super Bowler is Beau Allen, a rotational player his first four years with the Eagles, and other role players with playoff experience are the Vikings' Shamar Stephen, the Titans' big DE, DaQuan Jones, and the Rams' Tyrunn Walker.

The list of notable potential free agents also includes some veterans who've done damage to the Jets in the past. Twelve-year Bill Kyle Williams, who will be 35, has more sacks of Jets QBs, eight, than against any other NFL team. Haloti Ngata, 34 and coming off a torn biceps that limited him to five games with the Lions, had a strip-sack of Mark Sanchez that was turned into a Ravens TD in 2011.

Denico Autry has gotten to the QB twice in the Jets' last two visits to Oakland in '15 and last year. And Richardson could be on the market as well after his one season with the 'Hawks.

Synopsis
An unlikely summer trade gaveDemario Davis the opportunity to go back where his professional career started. After spending a year with the Browns in 2016, the Jets’ third-round selection in the 2012 Draft returned in a player-for-player swap as he was acquired in exchange for Browns S Calvin Pryor.

“Every player’s dream is to build their legacy in the place they got drafted,” Davis said.

Davis did just that in 2017, quarterbacking the Jets’ defense and thriving with a career year. He paced the Jets with 172 tackles and five sacks while helping a young unit take some steps forward in a building year.

The 6’2”, 239-pound Davis, who paired with second-year defender Darron Lee at inside ‘backer, has an expiring contract.

“It’s an exciting time for me. It’s very exciting,” he said at the onset of the offseason. “I feel like I’ve done everything I can do. At this point, it really comes down to the owner, the GM and the coaching staff and what they want and what they envision.”

Davis labeled the environment at One Jets Drive as “unique” and he praised the leadership in place with CEO Christopher Johnson, general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles.

“I honestly feel like they’re on the same page and that doesn’t always happen. It’s very rare,” said the six-year league veteran. “And then having character and chemistry inside the locker room — I love going to work every day because honestly it’s like a family in the locker room.”

Without outlining his plan in detail, Maccagnan did tell reporters that he would like to re-sign some of his free agents. The Jets still have a few weeks to negotiate with Davis before the League Year commences on March 14.

Edge rushers are always in high demand and DeMarcus Lawrence just racked up 14.5 sacks in 16 games. The Cowboys don’t want to lose the 2014 second-round pick and they may use the franchise tag to keep him in Big D.

The situation is similar in Detroit where the Lions may want to prevent Ezekiel Ansah from motoring out of Motown. The soon-to-be 29-year-old Ansah has 44 career sacks including 14.5- and 12-sack campaigns in 2015 and 17.

Junior Galette collected just three sacks last year in Washington, but the 6’2”, 254-pounder totaled 22 sacks with the Saints in 2013-14 before injuries slowed his ascent. A bust early in his career, Dion Jordan showed some flashes last year in Seattle while amassing four sacks in five games. Another defender who could have late-bloom potential is Jerry Attaochu. He is Georgia Tech’s all-time sack leaders in sacks with 31.5 and just turned 25 a couple of months ago.

An outside linebacker with Arizona from 2013-2016, Alex Okafor tallied four sacks at defensive end for the Saints last year in 10 games. Elite athlete Barkevious Mingo, the sixth-overall pick in the 2013 Draft who hasn’t emerged as an elite pass rusher, did play the best football of his career last season in Indianapolis.

Synopsis: For close to two decades, the Jets experienced an unprecedented run at center. It all started with a free agent pickup as Bill Parcells targeted Kevin Mawae in 1998 and the latter revolutionized the position, displaying an athleticism not seen before in the middle. Mawae, who earned six of his eight Pro Bowl selections with the Jets from 1999-2004, was released in the 2006 offseason.

The hole in the middle didn’t last long as the Jets selected Ohio State’s Nick Mangold with the 29[SUP]th[/SUP]overall selection in the ensuing Draft. Mangold would gain seven Pro Bowl invites and the only things that slowed him down were age and an ankle injury. Released last February after 11 seasons with the club, Mangold did not play in 2017.

Veteran Wesley Johnson made eight starts in relief of Mangold in 2016 and he became the guy last season, starting in all 15 of his appearances. But Johnson and his backup, Jonotthan Harrison, have expiring contracts and the Jets have a critical decision to make. While most of the speculation around the team is focused on the quarterback position, who will be hiking him the ball in 2018?

Ryan Jensen took over full-time center duties for the Ravens last season, earning plenty of praise along the way. He is expected to have multiple suitors if he hits the market and Jensen should have plenty of good football left in him, considering he has only made 35 NFL appearances and he will turn 27 in May. The Rams have expressed interest in retaining John Sullivan but it would be fascinating to see his market as the experienced Sullivan, a longtime Viking who has been an NFL starter since 2006, will be 33 when the regular season commences in September. A concussion limited Weston Richburg to just four games in 2017, but the Giant has three years of starting experience and could be an intriguing option for some clubs. Daniel Kilgore started 16 games last season for the 49ers and San Francisco reportedly has had discussions with his representation about a possible extension.

Next to the Jets’ center, both James Carpenter and Brian Winters are scheduled to return. Talented reserve Dakota Dozier, whom head coach Todd Bowles cited as one of the most improved players on the team, has a deal that will expire in March. The big fish at guard is slated to be Andrew Norwell, a former undrafted free agent who was named first-team All-Pro last year. The Panthers want Norwell back, but the stud mauler could command one of the most lucrative offensive linemen contracts in the history of the league.

At tackle, Kelvin Beachum gave the Jets a solid effort on the left side and the wise veteran provided a positive presence in the locker room. Across the way, Brandon Shell took a step forward in Year 2. One of the Patriots’ most pressing offseason questions revolves around Nate Solder, a first-round pick in 2011 who has been responsible for protecting Tom Brady’s blindside. Fellow Patriot Cameron Flemming is only 25 and he has the ability to play both tackle spots. In order to free up cap space, the Dolphins may elect to part ways with RT Ja’Wuan James.

The Green & White have the financial flexibility to target a couple of offensive linemen in free agency although general manager Mike Maccagnan has stated that successful teams find value in offensive line prospects in the draft that they grow and develop. Some of the top offensive linemen in April’s draft class include Notre Dame G Quenton Nelson, Oklahoma T Orlando Brown, Texas T Connor Williams, UCLA T Kolton Miller, UTEP G Will Hernandez, Ohio State C Billy Price, Arkansas C Frank Ragnow, Georgia T Isaiah Wynn and Notre Dame T Mike McGlinchey.

With Richburg, it would give him the chance to stay local while leaving the Giants. I understand there was some animosity regarding how he was treated this year. He had a concussion, but the Giants forced him onto IR after he had been cleared to return. Going to the Jets may be a perfect fit for him.

I would go one step further if the Giants don't try to keep Justin Pugh we go after him as well would complete the line... Brian Winters, Weston Richburg, Kelvin Beachum are three capable starters with the same style of Zone Blocking scheme... Wesley Johnson also familiar with this zone blocking scheme, leaving question if he returns they would need one more piece to complete this restructuring...

Bears will also release defensive end Willie Young, I know he isn't a young guy but he would be a solid starter next to Steve Mclendon and Leo... Would allow the Jets to then low ball Kony Ealy whom may want to return by adding this fluid talent... Young could be a bridge for a late round development player to be groomed to take over...

the one option on the defensive line that has not been mentioned is our current fullback former defensive end Lawrence Thomas, will he stay at fullback or will he reconvert to the defensive end position?

the Jets are primed for a big spending but cautious should be the real term being used...

do we keep our own or continue to find new short term veterans while still stacking youth through the draft?

I am not sold on Kirk Cousins, think he is a younger version of Josh McCown and twenty times more expensive do to the Redskins inability to commit and sign him long term... I say let him go to the Cardinals, Vikings or long shot Cleveland Browns... The Jets need to bow out gracefully and do their due diligence in Teddy Bridgewater to see if he passes the medical checks... If not then going after someone like McCarron is a smart short term move... But Bridgewater has the upside and skill set to be a competitive starter in this league, now with signing him opens the door for McCown to return as the backup, like last year... Bridgewater gets a 2 year $24 M deal, $16 M in the first year and 12 guaranteed... Having him under contract for the second year and nothing guaranteed is a team option to restructure a new deal if he shows mass improvement or a back door for the team to bow out... Re-sign Josh McCown to the same type of contract he got last season but just a little more base salary around $12 M for the one year and incentives if he starts because Bridgewater is unable to strap up... Of the two current options Petty or Hack will have a shot to make the roster unless the team feels one of the day two prospects can be that developmental prospect to be the third option behind Bridgewater and McCown...

Now that Forte has retired, opens the door for the Jets to make a splash... Mcguire has a role on this team, but he will need a comparable option to run with as he is far from a feature back especially in this league... Bilal Powell as much as I believe he deserves more snaps he is getting up there in age and is entering contract year where I don't think the team will retain him past this year... There are signs the Jets are looking into free agency said to be interested in two veterans, one Dion Lewis the other Doug Martin oddly enough both are similar in style to Bilal Powell and would take the role of what Matt Forte did the last two seasons... Like many would like to see us use one of the top three picks on someone that will become a stable in the backfield with Mcguire moving forward... Sony Michel is a top my list, but Rashaad Penny is another good option with the other second round pick we got in the Sheldon Richardson trade...

Austin Seferian Jenkins is pushing nerves not only with the team but fans are getting tired of his bravado and how he believes he is worth top end money when he only had a few touchdown reception for the entire season... Yes a few were over turned but that is on him for not finishing, those who finish get paid and he doesn't deserve it well not yet at least... Are there better options, yes both in free agency and the draft... With the in house options showcasing they aren't bad to the point we need ASJ, I hope the front office plays hard ball and lets him walk to see that what the team was offering was market value...

Offensive line is a mystery, people want Ryan Jensen I get it, but for the style of play that our new offensive line coach will install for Bates he doesn't fit... Richburg actually fits better but like most I am weary on his health, if he stays healthy we struck gold... I also do think it is time to part ways with James Carpenter either simple cap casualty or try to trade him... I wouldn't mind seeing a return of one of these three or two of them in Wesley Johnson, Dakota Dozier and/or Jonotthan Harrison to be the backup to our free agent center signee... As for left guard I have said it before believe if we are on the clock we have our QB position temporarily solved then going Quenton Nelson to fill the void at left guard for the now where this kid has the potential to move over and be a left tackle with his athleticism alone then we have to pull that trigger... These three moves will buy us some time with this position group...

Receiver is a new beast with if Q will be back, still no word on his recovery add in the new issue with RA, this team looks now to be thin at this position... Both rookies last season shows promise but jury still out the only steady option right now is Kearse... We could go into free agency maybe sign Tavon Austin who would become a true safety net for a QB like Bridgewater while give us a new dynamic option on offense... The Jets could also try to pry Jarvis Landry from Miami's grasp as long as they can pay this trade off player for player type deal and/or late round pick... One or both of these guys would solidify this position in the short term which we need now to try to figure out how we can acquire different styles of play makers throughout this offense...

Defensively like the offense needs some more infusion of talent but unlike the offense there are capable options to plug and complete the starting rotation while in need of depth at various positions... If we can sign two veteran option like Trumaine Johnson and Tyrann Matheiu at corner we could sew up the secondary with these two signings and for now not have to worry about drafting with a high pick at this position... The team like both rookies from last year because of their size and length not to mention Buster Skrine is still on the roster adding those two free agents would almost definitely cause them to part ways from him as Matheiu would be the upgrade that this team needs now not later... Bringing back both Terrence Brooks and Rontez Miles is a must and would cement the safety position...

Drafting one or two linebackers, retaining at least Julian Stanford if not for defensive snaps but special teams... Stanford showed potential as a role player on defense... Free agents there are few but one familiar option to Head Coach Todd Bowles in former UNC Tar Heel and Arizona Cardinal Kareem Martin... Martin an edge rusher who can play defensive end or outside linebacker would fill a role in our front seven... Now with the news of last year's rookie Dylan Donahue deciding to get drunk and drive westbound in the Tunnel's east bound lane and hit a jitney bus filled with passengers is likely to miss some time... Draft options are fluid this draft and one potential is alumni to our other outside linebacker in Jordan Jenkins... The prospect in question is Lorenzo Carter from Georgia... There is no word on the other Lorenzo currently on our team, in Lorenzo Mauldin future with his durability issues...

Now that Mo Wilk is gone, and last two seasons we seen the departure of Snacks and Sheldon Richardson this entire defensive line has been gutted... Guess the truth of this statement is now in full effect, out with the old in with the new... Do we draft, sign free agents or retain our own free agents...

Our biggest concern is on offense as for defense one or two starter signings along with a couple draft prospects to fill out all the starting roles gives us hope that this team could be heading in the right direction... Offensively will be a turnstile of talent until they find the right complimentary pieces but what do you want in a total from ground rebuild... Like Philly 76ers say "Trust the Process"...

I certainly agree with not worth it financially. He will play where money is of no concern. I am hoping the Jets will be cautious with their spending. But he is available to anyone who wants to splurge or who can make a decent trade deal. I would be OK with a fair trade deal.

I like your QB assessment here. I read today that Cousins says he wants a three year 90 Mil guaranteed deal minimum. Vikings can probably do that and if they would he would likely go there, If we do manage to pull off that deal it would change some of our moves. I'm all for signing Bridgewater if we bring McCown in to back him up if his knee gives out. I wouldn't want our rookie to have to step in again whoever that is. I would prefer filling our QB position through free agency this year. There are too many questions surrounding this years top draft QBs. I'd still draft one as our third later in the draft such as Rudolph and dump both Hack and Petty. I think we need a bull to replace Forte. Powell and Mcquire need help there. My number one choice will never fall to us but I also like Penny, but, if Nelson, Chubb or Key is there at 6. I would not pass on any of them. They are game changers.

As you say our receiving Corps is looking a little thin and up in the air so we need to add talent here. If ASJ was really as good as he thinks he is we wouldn't even be thinking about replacing him. There are several good looking TEs to be found in the draft along with some promising deep threats which we can pick up probably in later rounds. Hopefully we can shore up our defensive backfield in free agency. I feel that improving our running back and edge rushing ability will go a long way towards improving this team. And I still see left tackle as an important position to address. We need a silverback gorilla type of guy there protecting our QB, unless of course, our QB is left handed. I'd like to see Billy Price replace Wesley Johnson. Hopefully we are the only ones looking for a top notch center.

I can hardly wait til free agency and the draft are over so I can see how we did. I'm getting impatient.

I am not high on Richburg due to his health. IMO we need to address the DL (NT). Guard, WR, and QB (not Cousins) in FA. IMO we can use the Draft to address either OLB,ILB CB, RB, C or QB with our first four picks.

Free Agency is a week away. Who should we sign?

Kirk Cousins, Allen Robinson, Trumaine Johnson or Malcolm Butler, and either Jensen or Richburg at Center.

Then re-sign ASJ, Mo Claiborne, and Demario Davis.

Then we’re ready to draft BPA at #6 on April 26th.

The Giants OL is awful. Not sure having two castoffs from their shitty OL is ideal.
