Act of Secrecy
Whenever Joe Douglas is spotted talking to anyone, there is a ripple of excitement around the fans who want the Jets to draft that prospect. I get it, but just because Joe Douglas spent some time talking to Trevor Penning and Zion Johnson doesn’t mean the Jets are targeting them. He may have questions he wanted answering that he was unable to get to in the interviews, he may just be having a general chat.

The one thing we’ve learned about this setup is that the Jets don’t let anything get out there that they don’t want out there. So if you hear that the Jets are high on Trevor Penning or they are definitely in on McBride…that’s because the Jets want that to get out into the universe, they want other teams to think they’re high on certain prospects.

If you’ve ever tried engaging a scout in specific draft prospects in relation to how the organization views them, you’ll know it’s like getting blood out of a stone. So to think they’re all chit-chatting around a campfire in Mobile, revealing who they’re going to be targeting is a far-fetched motion.

Rumors and News from Mobile
The Senior Bowl doesn’t just kick off Draft Season, it is also the official start of RUMORSZN. Here’s what we are hearing from Mobile, AL.

- Malik Willis seems to be getting the most buzz of the QBs. Willis has spoken with the Saints, Broncos, Panthers and Steelers so far and the word in the circles here is how much the Steelers like Willis. Doubt he makes it past 20. Keep your eye on that over the next 2.5 months.

- Carson Strong has met with several NFL teams at the Senior Bowl including the Commanders (that feels weird to say), Saints, Steelers, Eagles and Titans.

- The free agency buzz has started picking up. Among the most-talked about group is the safeties. Most expect the Jaguars, Jets, Dolphins and Lions to be active here.

- There are multiple WRs coming off down years or injuries who could be looking for one-year deals in free agency. Allen Robinson, Michael Gallup, D.J. Chark and JuJu Smith-Schuster come to mind.

- The Jets have been smitten with a few pass-catchers in the process. Noted they like WR Khalil Shakir, TE Trey McBride and Jeremy Ruckert have been on their radar here in Mobile.

- The QB trade market talk is well under way in Mobile. Obviously the big fish is Aaron Rodgers. Teams are lining up to make their pitch for the soon-to-be MVP. The 49ers have also shopped Jimmy Garoppolo in Mobile. Our guess is the Jimmy G trade happens well before Rodgers.

- The “it” thing to do right now is gang up on Oregon DE Kayvon Thibodeaux. We see many people in the community saying he could fall on draft day. We have a hard time seeing that. With the Jets and Giants at 4 and 5, and needing pass rush help, we’d be stunned to see him fall past the NY teams.

- The Lions have spoken with the agents for a few of their incoming free agents. They have interest in retaining Charles Harris, Josh Reynolds, and Kalif Raymond.

- The Rams and Odell Beckham Jr. have expressed a desire to reunite going forward. Odell loves it in LA and the feeling is mutual. He might not even make it to the open market.

- The Buccaneers know they have a lot of work to do to retain a lot of their free agents. The biggest decision they are contemplating is whether to use the franchise tag on WR Chris Godwin (2nd tag) or CB Carlton Davis.

- What the Giants do with CB James Bradberry and LB Blake Martinez will be interesting. They’d face a chunk of dead cap if they move on from them but they want to trim about $40M on the cap. They are expected to shop Bradberry to teams in Mobile and in a few weeks at the Combine.

- The Falcons haven’t started trade talks for WR Calvin Ridley yet but there are people in Mobile that expect that to start in the coming weeks.

Aaron Whitecotton, Jets defensive line coach had to be the most electric coach of the week in Mobile. Dude is getting in a 3 point stance screaming “get off the fuc*ing ball” and “pick up the fu*king pace” during Indy drills. Talk about bringing the juice Chart with upwards trendFire
