“Overpay” for Robby Anderson if necessary

Joe Douglas will have to be judicious with how much he doles out in his first free agency in the big chair, but it would be a mistake to let Anderson walk. Timing is everything for Anderson, who will be one of the most coveted wide receivers in a relatively weak free agency class. Amari Cooper is on the marquee, but the Cowboys could keep him in-house by slapping the franchise tag on him if they aren’t ready to commit the big bucks in a multi-year deal. Does 31-year-old A.J. Green, who missed the entire season, entice you?

Anderson, who will turn 27 this summer, is entering his prime. Most importantly for the Jets, he has developed a chemistry with Darnold. So, why strip the young quarterback of a quality weapon? The best way to truly cultivate Darnold’s talents is to surround him with good players. Whether or not Anderson, who had 52 receptions for 779 yards and five touchdowns, is a “true No. 1 receiver” isn’t nearly as important as whether he can help Darnold — and thus, the entire offense — get to a higher plane.

Anderson showed signs of diversifying his portfolio in his fourth season. His improvement (see: contested catches) in the second half of the season was undeniable.

Another key question centers on how much Anderson can trust Gase. Remember, the head coach was on board with getting rid of the player before the trade deadline. Make no mistake: The Jets were shopping Anderson. What happens the next time Anderson gets in Gase’s doghouse? The coach’s penchant for changing his mind on players every other week will be a real factor for Anderson.

Anderson could be in line for a deal in the neighborhood of $12-$14 million/year. Will the Jets be willing to be the highest bidder? They’ll have to be since Anderson isn’t giving any hometown discounts.

If he wants a 'better situation' it will be difficult to compete, one of the problems of years of futility. Nevertheless we shouldn't pay significantly more than he is worth because that sets the benchmark for other contracts.

It was a good run RA ...Darnold can grow with another WR or he and Gase can hit the road together

Let him go. he only started playing better when it got mentioned in the sports world that he was throwing away money by not producing.

Robby at best is a #2 guy, so is $10M the going rate for a #2?

As already mentioned, he did improve in the second half of the season but we cannot be sure if that was improvement or just him GAF to make sure he gets his money. He was completely disengaged the first half of the season and looked like he was phoning it in.

Don't get this franchise.
Turned down the Eagles offer at the deadline, didn't try to extend Robby then. Now he likely walks and we get no compensation....

I'd rather let him walk then to overpay him and cripple the cap. For most of his career (all sans the 2nd half of this season), Robby has been a one trick pony. I'm not confident that the 2nd half play wasn't solely money motivated and not personal growth.

He may get paid and go back to being a one trick pony who won't fight a grandmother for a reception.

Robby truly is an asset to the team and he has improved, for whatever reason, he has improved. His chemistry with Sam is a real plus and he desevres to get paid a reasonable amount for a receiver that brings to the table what he does. They need to look at what other receivers at his skill level are getting and that needs to be the pay range they offer. A little over pay might be worth it but not much. Robbie made it very clear in his last interview that his priority is the money and that concerns me. Trumaine Johnson/Darelle Revis all over again..........get a big pay check then coast. I'm afraid I'm on the fence with this one.

Reasonable deal or let him walk. He finished 2nd on the team in receiving yards behind Crowder, so I'm good with letting him walk.

Robby scares no one, we need a true #1 WR.

Keep in mind how often Anderson was open for long gains and TDs but Darnold didn't see him or missed him.
If the expectation is that Darnold takes a big leap forward with an improved O line, Anderson's stats would take as big of a leap. If the o line and QB play don't improve, this team won't have a true #1 WR no matter who is drafted or signed.
Gase's offense really calls for fast, shifty WRs, who can get YACs and turn a 3 yard pass into a big gain. Robby showed , between last year, preseason and the second half of this season that he can do that and still take the top off the D when Gase takes a shot. He's worth $10-11 mill per season. Possibly a little more. Douglas should have offered him an extension right after the trade deadline when Robby was estatic to still be with the team.

You're right Tony. A golden opportunity missed there. Now his improved stats have gone to his head. Like I said though, he deserves to get paid for his skill but not exorbitantly. Rumor has it he's asking min 12mil.

Robby is not a Demaryius Thomas type WR, he is a go route runner. I don't see Robby taking short slants over the middle and taking that for big gains (he can barely come down with the ball if the defender sneezes at him or just yells)!

Dude is not going to run into traffic against the S's and LB's and go fight for yards (not his game). He is the guy who can take the top off the defense but we need a lot up front to make that work.

At $12M Robby is asking for money way out of his pay grade
