Pats trade Jamie Collins for a 3rd RD Compensatory Pick

Stunner: Pats send Jamie Collins to Browns

Browns acquired LB Jamie Collins from the Patriots for a compensatory third-round pick.

The Pats seemed to solve their contract logjam by sending Chandler Jones to the Cardinals over the offseason, but they have now offloaded perhaps their best defensive player for a late third-round pick. It is a stunning move which certainly carries much more backstory than we know about right now. Collins should play inside linebacker for the Browns and is a massive upgrade over Demario Davis and Chris Kirksey. As long as the Browns are able to get him under contract, this should end up being a great trade for Cleveland. New England now has to lock up Dont'a Hightower to a long-term deal.

At this point I think Belichick is so superior to the rest of the coaches, he just likes to f**k with people and say I can win without this guy, this guy, this guy, or that guy LOL

He was our coach for one day, but he knew this franchise is a losing franchise and it was time to get the hell out.

I hate the SOB, but there's no denying he runs circles around the rest of the league.

Call it cheating, call it what you will, but the SOB is so superior that he can cast off his best players on a whim, lose his HOF QB for a quarter of the season, and still kick everybody's ass, and sadly, still win the AFCE in his sleep.

As long as he has Brady putting up 30+ points a game, it doesn't matter trading off a LB here and there.

Defense wins championships, but young blood is the lifeline. They let wilfork go, traded the de to Arizona, and now Collins. 3 pretty significant players for and hand full of mediocre picks, but knowing belichick those picks will be pro bowlers.

I do get a bit fatigued at hearing how everything Belichick does is genius because he does it. It's not. This trade makes little sense. The Chandler Jones trade made little sense, aside from synthetic marijuana.

Just because Belichick does it doesn't make it smart. He has to be proven to have made the right move. And in both trades and draft picks, he often doesn't.

I'll go further than that, not only are they not smart moves, they are often times downright stupid moves that would bury normal teams. My only point is, BB is so far superior to the rest of the league that he alone can do stuff like this, over and over again, and not pay any price for it in terms of wins and losses. If the Jets traded away their best players as often at Belichick does, we would be in competition for the #1 Overall Pick, and the same is true of a lot of organizations. Sometimes I think BB intentionally does stuff like this to compete with himself and to prove he can get away with it. Again, call it cheating, call it what you will, but he'll win his usual 12+ Games regardless, win the AFCE in a breeze, and he'll be in the AFC Championship, AT LEAST, if not the Super Bowl.

With how badly this guy wants to win, how much he cheats despite already having the advantage, how much he runs it up on other teams, I'd doubt he does this stuff to level the playing field.

It's much more likely he is an awful scout of talent and an incredible football coach.

I don't think he's trying to level the playing field, its not altruism, its arrogance.

He's basically saying; I'm doing this because I CAN, and YOU CAN'T.

I thought compensatory picks couldn't be traded?
EDIT: I see new starting with the 2017 draft they are tradeable. Never understood why they wouldn't be anyway... but we're not at the 2017 draft yet so hopefully the league will strip them... of a third... lol

He traded a 6th last week for Kyle Van Noy and Detroit's 7th. He was a highly regarded 2nd round pick out of BYU, and perhaps BB saw enough of him to decide that there wouldn't be a significant drop-off from Collins. If I'm not mistaken, Collins was also in for a big payday at the end of the season. BB doesn't typically pay like most teams do, so I'm sure he weighed the benefits of the extra 3rd pick vs the contract headache. Hate to say it, but he makes it work somehow.

Let's be honest here....

If the Jets do the same trade in the same position the Pats are in, the media would crucify them. But Belichick does it and it's OK, even if it doesn't work out.

He's had as many failures as he has hit gold doing this.... but he gets the benefit of the doubt.

What would you think if the Jets had traded Mo for a late second Rd pick and a Guard that we realeased a month into the season? BB did that with Chandler Jones and there isn't a peep about that trade being a failure.

I'm more curious why a rebuilding team just gave up a pick for Collins who is in a contract year?

This is the difference between "accountability" and none. I see missed assignments, blow coverages, bad play and stupid penalties on one team but not the other. Its called coaching and having a system...

What the hell is our system? Have you heard TB say what it is other then we "have to get better" at what I ask.... sorry for the rant but I am sick of this stiff in a HC clothing.

It's the Lombardi's he has in his back pocket that gives him the margin for error. The Patriots were basically the Browns before Belichik and Brady came along...
