oh for effs sake, will you knock it off with the horse spit bowles!!

stop with the "i'm gonna trick the other 31 GM's into trading for smith" routine..

jeezbus!!

LOL

I agree. Maybe Bowles is just playing the odds. smith's history is play like crap, then give ya a bit of false hope, play OK, then going back to sucking again.

Maybe after a meh game, then a horrible game, Bowles thinks smith is due for a decent game to showcase.

Who knows? I like Bowles, but some times I wonder if he out thinks himself.

I think Geno getting cut/traded is not necessarily imminent. Petty, despite his success, is getting clobbered. I doubt the front office would trade Geno knowing the likelihood of Petty getting injured within the next 2 weeks. The cut/trade is still imminent, it just probably won't happen as soon as some are speculating....

In all honesty MJ I don't care. The main thing I was concerned about back when Petty was playing poorly is that he would be cut to save a roster spot.

IMO Petty has secured his spot. Now it's smith who is playing for his roster spot. i would like to see him gone, sooner rather then later, but it they can squeeze a pick out for him, I'm all for it.

At this point I just don't want to see us have to run one of the young WR's thru waivers just to keep smith on the team for a period of time.

What will happen, will happen I guess. Just kind of baffling.

It is a bit odd. But I am sure there is a solid intent behind it, whatever that may be.

With Fitz assured of the #1 spot, does he basically sit out here? Most often, starters play Week 3 preseason games, and rest in the finale. But perhaps this is a way of seeing how Geno performs with and against first stringers. If he succeeds, he might land a sixth or seventh. If he fails, cut bait and go with Petty.

That is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Well here's Mehta's explanation for it

Jets coach Todd Bowles leaves door open for Bryce Petty to move ahead of Geno Smith on depth chart

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Last week, Geno Smith took to Twitter to accuse the media of making up stories.

Now his head coach is the one stirring the pot.

When pressed about the status of the Jets' quarterback depth chart after Sunday's training camp practice, Todd Bowles was non-committal, deflecting questions instead of cementing a true pecking order as he did earlier this summer.

Obviously, Fitzpatrick remains the starter. But Bowles refused to divulge any information on how the rest of the group stacks up.

At the start of camp, Bowles made it clear Geno Smith was the backup, Bryce Petty was third-string and rookie Christian Hackenberg was fourth-string. But after Petty outplayed Smith in Friday's preseason loss to Washington - he threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns while Smith mustered just 47 yards passing with an interception - it appears Bowles is leaving the door open.

"Right now, they're all playing," Bowles said when asked if his quarterback depth chart remains the same. "And we're trying to see who sorts out what."

Saturday's preseason game against the Giants should be a strong indication of where the Jets stand with their quarterbacks. Both teams' starters will play a significant amount of time in what will be a dress rehearsal in the third preseason game for each side.

Bowles said Fitzpatrick and the Jets' first-team offense will play "a pretty good amount," likely all of the first half and possibly into the third quarter. But the coach would not say which quarterback is going to replace Fitzpatrick on Saturday.

"All of them have got to be up to play," Bowles said of his four signal-callers. "We've got a plan for the quarterbacks that we're not revealing, and Saturday, we'll play the guys that we have scheduled to play. But we do have a plan to play certain people."

When asked to clarify if Smith will be the second guy into Saturday's game, Bowles resorted to a similar answer.

"To be clear," Bowles said, "we have a plan on who we're going to play that we're not going to reveal."

If Smith is still the Jets' No. 2 quarterback, Bowles is going to great lengths to keep that a secret. Otherwise, the Gang Green coach is indicating that a legitimate position battle is in the works.

In Sunday's practice, Smith was the first quarterback under center after Fitzpatrick in 11-v-11 drills, and he received considerably more reps than Petty.

Smith played close to 30 plays, while Petty played fewer than 15. Petty was the fourth quarterback to enter 11-v-11 drills.

Despite Petty's solid statistical performance in Friday's game, Bowles was quick to point out that the second-year man out of Baylor wasn't perfect.

"He'd like to have some throws back. He made some mistakes," Bowles said of Petty. "He made some good throws and he made some bad throws, too."

Bowles' analysis aside, Petty said he felt much more "comfortable" in Friday's game, an indication of his continued progress.

"I'm not as antsy in the pocket, I'm not as rushed in my thought process, which is all good," Petty said. "So I've just got to continue to build off of that and continue to become more and more comfortable, and that's through preparation, that's through film time and practice time and all that good stuff."

By comparison, Smith was a disaster on Friday, throwing more incompletions than completions while posting a 23.6 quarterback rating on 13 passing attempts.

Bowles said he must take into account Smith's full body of work when evaluating the one-time Jets starter.

"It's a combination. It's a progression (for) all the quarterbacks and all the positions - how much you've done in the past, what you've done in camp, as well as the preseason games," Bowles said. "You've got to evaluate all that for everybody."

If Bowles' comments are any indication, that evaluation has not been positive for Geno Smith

Jets' Bryce Petty's 'whole picture is getting cleaner,' as he progresses

FLORHAM PARK — It's still too early to definitively determine that Bryce Petty would make a better Jets backup quarterback than Geno Smith.

But Petty, a second-year pro and former Round 4 draft pick, has done some encouraging things in this training camp. Jets quarterbacks coach Kevin Patullo likes how Petty has progressed.

"With him, it's just been kind of everything as a quarterback," Patullo said Wednesday. "You can tell he's growing overall. His whole picture is getting cleaner.

"You could tell in the spring it was getting cleaner, and then as time goes on, you could just feel it: He's understanding more. His questions are better. What he sees in the film room is better.

"And you could tell it's just translating to the field a little bit cleaner. He knows there's still stuff he needs to work on. He understands what's good and bad and what he needs to focus on."

Petty was a raw project, coming out of Baylor's spread offense, when the Jets drafted him. He is showing more polish now.

Patullo said Petty's pre-snap recognition of defensive alignments is "getting better. With everything, it's reps. The more you go through it, the better it is."

Petty played well in Friday's Week 2 preseason game at Washington. It's not clear how much — if at all — he will play Saturday against the Giants. Jets coach Todd Bowles has declined to reveal Saturday's playing time plan for his quarterbacks.

Petty said before the Washington game that he needed to trust himself more, to make quicker decisions during games. Patullo has mentored him on this.

Said Patullo: "It's really just: 'Trust yourself. If you feel like you know it, let it go. You've got to trust yourself at some point.' I think he feels comfortable with where he is, and that's what helps you speed up your decisions."

Could this be the order of the Jets' QB depth chart? From front to back: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. In case you're wondering, Geno Smith never stretches with the QB group. Odd.

I wonder if smith's team mates and CS notice that he has separated himself from the other QB's ?

This is the depth chart I'd like to see. Hope Bowles/Macc agree

How could they not? You mean to tell me that f*cking a$$hole Geno has decided to boycott stretching with his group?! WHY is Todd Bowles tolerating this??????????

This is damn near insubordination as far as I am concerned. Bill Parcells would have NEVER dealt with this sh*t.

If Bowles is allowing Geno to get away with this nonsense then I have ZERO confidence in Todd Bowles. And it's no wonder why his teammates have no respect for that punk Geno. Just like me, they see things like this and automatically dislike the childish retard.......

i rarely gamble but i'd take that bet..

no shock value though.. you've specifically pointed out that petty was regularly seen attached to fitzpatrick's hip his rookie season, with no signs of smith..

now his other hip has hackenberg but again, smith know where to be found..

terribly odd self absorbed young man, that smith.. seems no one can convince him he doesn't have it all figured out..

you taking notes bowles?? i bet your employers are.....
