Bryce Petty deserves more time with a better supporting cast in Jets' second preseason game — ahead of Geno Smith

I feared for Bryce Petty’s life last Thursday the way that sportswriters fear for any professional quarterback getting pulverized behind a horrific offensive line made up of nobodies on a sweltering summer night: A safe distance away in air conditioning.

By the time Petty’s performance in the Jets preseason opener was over, I nearly felt his pain. It’s a wonder the poor guy made it out of bed Friday morning after taking body blows from every conceivable direction. Heck, his teammate even crunched him once after failing to pick up a heat-seeking missile disguised as a blitzing cornerback.

Petty told me that he wanted to “Brett Favre it” before this most crucial preseason for him, making the same folks who decided to draft Christian Hackenberg in the second round think twice about their decision. He took it personally, because, well, he’s a human being. Who wouldn’t take such a slap in the face personally?

“There’s got to be some inspiring plays in there and some things that make them say, ‘Wow! Did you see Bryce?’” he told me before going 7-for-14 for 93 yards in five series in the Jets’ 17-13 win over the Jaguars last week. “That’s what I want them to say.”

How playing Madden has helped improve Bryce Petty's football IQ
It’s premature to throw Wrangler jeans and a gold jacket on Petty, but the second-year signal caller showed enough promise against the Jaguars to warrant more playing time with a better supporting cast in the second preseason game in Washington on Friday.

Todd Bowles maintained over the weekend that there’s no competition between Geno Smith and Petty for the No. 2 quarterback job, which runs contrary to the coach’s philosophy: Anybody can slide down the depth chart if the man below him seizes the opportunity and takes it away.

Bowles made that abundantly clear on the second day of camp when asked about whether the backup gig was up for grabs.

“It’s up for grabs if the other guys play well,” Bowles said less than three weeks ago. “It’s just like any other position. If you don’t play well, your spot is up for grabs, and if somebody comes in and takes it and if you let them take it, so be it.”

Jets can't give up on Bryce Petty, who's looking to prove himself
Bowles gave Ryan Fitzpatrick, Smith and Petty the Bowles treatment after the first preseason game. They each “played okay,” he said, which is relatively high praise from a coach who rarely publicly slobbers over any player.

Smith, the most experienced beardless quarterback on the roster, actually was just okay.

Bryce Petty deserves a chance to play with first-team offense. (BILL KOSTROUN/AP)
The mercurial former starter has waged the weirdest of boycotts against the media in recent days. Word on the street is that Smith was less than thrilled with a headline for a story chronicling the one-year anniversary of his locker room altercation with IK Enemkpali that ultimately cost him his starting job. (One of Geno’s handlers should inform him that reporters don’t write the headlines, but I digress.)

Smith took his displeasure to social media Sunday with a pair of tweets intimating that the media fabricates stories (INSERT EYE ROLL HERE), thereby needlessly creating a story at a time when he should be concerned about more important matters. A few minutes later, he tweeted that he was focused. By the way, focused people in any walk of life don’t waste time or energy tweeting that they’re focused to a bunch of strangers.

So, what's up with Geno Smith's subtweets? Jets backup QB upset
While Geno is doing Geno things, Petty deserves a chance to have at least one series with the first-team offense after Fitzpatrick gets his work in against Washington to better evaluate him as the brain trust considers keeping four quarterbacks. (Fitzpatrick played six series and into the middle of the second quarter in the second preseason game last year.)

The Jets should minimize Petty’s time behind the third-string line if they want to truly gauge his progress … and value his health. Consider Petty’s supporting cast in the preseason opener: He was throwing to two undrafted rookie receivers (Jalin Marshall and Robby Anderson), a seventh-round rookie (Charone Peake) and a second-year guy from Troy (Chandler Worthy). Petty’s running back: An undrafted rookie (Romar Morris).

Petty played behind the second-team offensive line for two drives before some guys named Jesse Davis and Mike Liedtke, who will be wearing a suit-and-tie and packing a lunch to work for their 9-to-5s soon enough, came in to “protect” him. In a feat that would surely baffle chemists everywhere, the offensive line turned from a solid to a liquid.

Petty was unofficially pressured on eight of 17 drop backs. He was hit four times and sacked twice. There were too many culprits to count. How bad did it get? On third-and-5 late in the fourth quarter, Morris was late trying to pick up a blitzing cornerback. He made a last-second attempt to block the rusher, but drilled Petty, who was sandwiched between friend and foe.

Petty was effective out of familiar traditional shotgun and pistol formations. He displayed good functional mobility when the pocket frequently collapsed. He looked sharp on designed rollouts/bootlegs. He had a teammate drop a pass and another one give questionable effort on a play that Ricky Watters would have approved (See: “For Who? For What?”).

The Jets’ search for a franchise quarterback has been an annoying and painstaking endeavor. The powers that be owe it to themselves to fully evaluate Petty this preseason. It makes perfect sense to give him more time with a better supporting cast in Washington.

IMO, bowles/gailey would be fools not give petty a chance with at least the 2nd teamers..

the kid has earned a shot to show he can be fitzpatrick's backup this season.. period.....

I also rarely agree with Mehta, but on this one I do.

If Petty again gets the bulk of second string reps in Practice today, and again on Fri, and plays well, think smith can start checking the want ad's

Just as a point of information, in today's practice Hackenberg seemed to take geno's reps in the first team period. Did very well IMO.

smith came out in second team period, got 5 reps. Dropped 2 snaps from center. Had two interceptions dropped an an incompletion. Threw his helmet after the period

Seemed to settle down after that. Mehta made a note on how few snaps he took.

Don't know what it all means for sure, but it's sure interesting.

I don't often agree with Mehta, but on this one I agree with him 100%

Ham, I personally think he logged into Jetsfansunited.com, read what you, myself, FLgreen, and many others have posted and simply changed it into his own words and is now claiming it's his standpoint. He writes a lot of crap and if my memory serves me correctly, I think he was one of the media dingbats that claimed Petty could get cut.

Actually I don't think your far from the truth. I don't think the scribes come on the board and plagiarize people, but I do think they come on the boards and see what the fans are talking about.

Some of these guys write 3-4 stories a day. Got to get hits on their blogs, the paper news print isn't paying them beans.

They get some ideas for a story, some times they agree with the way a poster presents an argument

Oh, how things can change in an instant. This article is lauding the Jets to give Petty playing time with the 2's. Now, I am seeing articles claiming Petty has locked up the number 2 gig without even having played with them. I see posts on this site claiming Petty should get time with the starters. Personally, I think Petty does deserve reps with both 1's and 2's. Find out his exact level of skill at this point in time. Measure his aptitude and move forward focusing on the areas he is lacking.

In Geno's defense it really is only one game that is causing this drastic in everyone's opinions. But honestly, with 4 QB's on the roster it's impossible to give every QB all of the reps that they deserve. Therefore, it should be done knowing that the most likely QB's to see action this season get the vast majority of reps.

Ryan Fitzpatrick should get the most reps with 1's as he is our starter.

BRYCE PETTY should get the 2nd most reps with the 2's. Not 3's any more, this kid has graduated very clearly.

Geno and Hack can fight it out for what's left....

Got to disagree with the bolded MJ. it is not 1 game that is causing problems for smith. It's 29 games of wildly inconsistent play. he just doesn't seem to have the heart to be a successful NFL QB.

IMO smith's real problem is the fight or flight mechanism that is built into all of us. With some good QB's when the pocket starts to break down, they either step up, throw the ball, and take the hit, or the run for positive yards. That's the fight side of it. Think we're seeing it in Petty.

What we've seen repeatably from smith is when the pocket gets tight, he turns and runs.................the wrong way. Making a bad situation into a disaster. I don't think that can be fixed. It's about what is in your heart. JMO

Well, it's only ONE game that Bryce has demonstrated that he is playing better than Geno. I don't need a history lesson about how bad Geno is. I think I authored the book.

Yes, Geno does run the wrong way. However, he also takes sacks when it clearly ill advised to do so, like taking a sack that takes the team out of scoring position. He's all over the map bad.

And the other night was just as bad as any bad games he's ever had, the only thing that is different is that he's still doing the same dumb crap with the football going into his 4TH season in the league. As I recall off the top of my head, Geno had a 3 INT preseason game in his rookie season. Friday night was every bit as bad as the 3 INT game. Add to that this game is taking place in the preseason. If he cannot play preseason football, how in the world could we ever trust during the regular season?

For some reason smith is taking most of the snaps today, even with the 1's. According to the tweets he is playing pretty well

Trade value?

Could be. After practice, according to the tweets, Bowles was questioned about it. He wouldn't acknowledge if Petty was even going to play against the Giants. Petty didn't get many reps today

Looks like smith will get reps with the 1's. One of 2 things is going on in my opinion.

1) He is show casing smith hoping for a trade.

2) He has decided that Petty WILL make the team. he's going to give smith one more chance to see if he'll be on the team.

Odd development

Another interesting development from the camp tweets. Breno is now refusing to talk to the media.

Wonder if he is actually healthy, and they're keeping him on PUP so the other OT's can audition for his job? That's just a guess by the way

It is a bit odd. But I am sure there is a solid intent behind it, whatever that may be.

With Fitz assured of the #1 spot, does he basically sit out here? Most often, starters play Week 3 preseason games, and rest in the finale. But perhaps this is a way of seeing how Geno performs with and against first stringers. If he succeeds, he might land a sixth or seventh. If he fails, cut bait and go with Petty.

That is the only thing that makes sense to me.

I'm inclined to agree.

Bowles left the post practice presser kind of hanging. Have a feeling this is going to be all Fitz and smith against the lGiants, and Hack and Petty against the Bird's

He's got something up his sleeve. The scribes are all saying he is being very evasive. We'll see what happens next.
