Petty has FQB tools, but a long way to go

Size, arm talent, mobility, strength and toughness, kid took a beating today behind a patchwork O-line and kept fighting, they couldn't break his spirit, there's a lot to like about this young man, but mentally he has a long way to go, his pre-snap reads needs to get better and he has to adapt to the speed of the game, in this league you have to make quick decisions and get rid of the football, thats the hardest adjustment young QB's have to make from college to the NFL, thats what scouts/coaches/analysts mean when they say the game needs to slow down for him, so we won't know what we have until that happens, OR IF IT HAPPENS, because it doesn't happen for everyone, but if it happens for Petty I think he has the tools to at least be a 'Quality Starter' in this league, with a FQB ceiling, because he has the physical tools and toughness.

We'll just have to see, the jury is out, Rome wasn't built in a day, but I see some reasons for optimism.

Sure he has along way to go, but not as long as Hackenburg or anyone they would draft in April

Agreed, ideally Petty will flash enough upside during this brief audition so drafting a QB high is not necessary. My gut says he will. I think he's gonna smoke Miami next week, but we'll see.

That may all be moot since the qb class this year is below average.

Petty showed flashes today and in previous games. He said he idolized Favre. Kid can be a gunslinger, and tell me that ot throw to Robbie wasn't favreian? Kid took a beating and showed heart. That two point dive showed that. Just wish he didn't throw that pick on the first throw. Awful decision, nerves aside. That's a throw he can't make and has to learn from. He said multiple times in the pressed he was nervous. Hopefully it slows down for him and he feels more confidant Sunday. I'm a proponent for a good draft pick. But if we win a game or two because of this kid, it will be worth the thought of having a qb to build around.

My gut tells me we are screwed in 2017. The jets won today and that means that retard Bowles will have another full season to fuck the team up even worse.

I was impressed with Petty's arm strength and toughness. He can clearly make all the throws, and he isn't afraid of contact (as evidenced on the two point conversion). I like his "moxie" as they like to say.

But he has a long way to go. As the beat writers all correctly pointed out, he holds the ball too long. And that was part of the reason he got sacked so much today. Even a few of his throws to Anderson were toss ups where Anderson jumped up and stole the ball. I already mentioned it earlier, but the INT was a rookie QB blunder. You cannot do that.

Overall, a mixed assessment of Petty. But he's got three more to show progress. He has a chance.

Assuming its not that everyone is covered, holding the ball too long is a product of these few things, and all can be attributed to youth and limited NFL experience/reps:

1. Poor pre snap reads (the INT on the first possession can be attributed to this as well).

2. Has to go thru his progressions quicker (and better pre snap reads would help him to spot the single coverage).

3. Has to adjust to the speed of the game and develop that mental clock in his head.

4. Has to do a better job of feeling the rush and knowing when to elude the rush, roll out, run, or throw it away.

Better pre snap reads will help him to recognize the blitz and adjust the blocking schemes too.

All of this stuff results in the normal growing pains for young QB's, thats why I'm not alarmed, its to be expected.

Whomever the QB is next year, we need to generate a running attack somehow. Prescott would be much less successful without Elliott and that OL.

Nobody can question his arm. That's not anything to take lightly, either. Playing mostly in the North East, having a strong arm is important, especially in the later part of the year. Im impressed with his attitude and willingness to take on tacklers, too. He's no wallflower out there.

He's got the foundation to be a pretty good QB. He just needs to get the ball out a little quicker, and develop some chemistry with receivers. When the game starts to slow down for him, we could see drastic improvement.

I was impressed with the way he came back from that pick 6, and also impressed with getting the win after that awful start. But it was done against a team that is now on a 12-game losing streak. Road wins are always a plus. But when the fins come to town, a team that is on a winning streak, that will be a better test.

Count me in as one who believes that physical skills and tools are the bare minimum; the mental side of the game, and the leadership aspect of the QB position, are what separate the men from the boys, so to speak. Petty showed some toughness yesterday. I like that. But I just know we're setting ourselves up for disappointment when we start talking about "FQB tools."

That said, I liked what I saw from Petty more yesterday than I did in his previous game. He made at least one nice throw on the run that reminded me of a good QB. I liked that. But I'm just gonna let it play out. I hope that things actually just work out, so that we can avoid the "is it time to make a switch?" debate that of which I am sure we are all very tired. People get at each other's throats because we all care about it so much. So imagine how FUN it would be if all that passion was directed at supporting the team, because the team was just good? WOW. It's a fantasy I have lol.

But anyway, yea, better week for Petty. But I'm not really ready to say "FQB tools" and I don't even really wanna lay that expectation on the kid's head. We will know if he is a franchise QB by the numbers he puts up and by the games he wins. No more, no less.

As the game went on I think he started to get better with points 3 and 4... I think the more he plays that will become a non issue.... and I think the more he plays 1 and 2 will improve ... A lot... I am not concerned either.... I am concerned he won't get enough time to improve... He needs game time experience to keep growing.

this was the most irritating part of bowles waiting until the very last moment to give the kid his shot.....

for a guy that likes to matter of factly say he has no concerns with his job security, he certainly gave fitzpatrick every opportunity possible to stockpile meaningless wins..

go figure..
