Randy Myers wrote an article about him being available because he doesn't want to sign an extension. They come calling if Mariota drops to six and offer rivers and a pick or two for the spot, are we in for Rivers?
I think the article was by the 5'4" toupee wearing Giant fan jackass football "expert" from the Daily News, Gary Myers, not the former Met and Cub closer.Randy Myers wrote an article about him being available because he doesn't want to sign an extension. I would trade more than our #6 pick to get Rivers. I wouldn't even blink at our first two picks in this draft.
Rivers is a legitimate franchise QB with at least 3-4 good years ahead of him (Brees not so much).
Is he perfect? Of course not but why in the world would you pass on that opportunity?!
Why should he sign an extension..he sees what average players are getting on the open market this year...he has 7 kids..a religious guy..Im sure he has plenty of money socked away in case he gets hurt..next year as a QB he would make more than any other potential free agents anyway....
but back to Jets.....I guess would have to think about it depending on what the deal is...just for 6th..never do it
GUESS I WAS WRONG he has 8
Rhetorical question....if we got Rivers for 1st and 2nd picks..would we be a legit Super Bowl contender ?
I know we would make playoffs
I know your questions is rhetorical, but I am going to answer it anyway...I think the Jets need a pass rushing OLB, speedy WR, and speedy RB to be in the running for the super bowl...
I say that to say this:
1) Pats beat last year's Colts to make the Super Bowl - are the jets with Rivers as good as the two teams that were in the AFC championship game?
me: I think so, I think the Jets would be better on paper than last year's colts if they added Rivers...
2) Jets need a pass rushing OLB, speedy WR, and speedy RB to be in the running for the super bowl
me: jets can get 2 of these 3 in the draft if they trade for rivers, WR and RB, likely not the stud pass rusher though. Would we be willing to forego the stud OLB for Rivers? For me, yes, because I think Rivers gives you a chance to play in the AFC championship game if you get him.
3) Rivers cap number is looking like $18-20 mill to get him...do you do it? Remember, signing/adding him likely puts a big time young piece available down the road in free agency...
Me: I would lose Harris, Cro, Revis, Mangold, or Brick 1-2 years too early than lose a 26-27 year old Richardson or Wilkerson...you do what it takes to keep them, even if it is moving on from ole reliable...
rivers has been in the nfl 11 years; 9 as a full time starter. in these 9 years, he has a 4-5 playoff record with 1 afc title game appearance. in these 9 games, he has 11 TDs and 9 Ints.
i think Rivers is a pretty good QB, but i'm not so sure he makes the jets, or any team, an instant title contender.
that said i would consider trading for him if he was available. but i'm not giving up the #6 pick for him, unless SD is giving us back their own 1st rounder. in the end, he's still a 33 y.o. QB a year shy of huge contract who has had very little playoff success in 9 years in the league as a full time starter. and when the heat has been on in the playoffs, he's been pretty mediocre (11 TDs/9 ints in 9 games, with a 4-5 record).

I don't think Rivers makes a team an instant title contender, either. But I do think that he may be the missing piece for a team stacked on defense and with a solid running game and pretty good OL and WRs.
Do you feel our current roster, on both sides of the ball is better, worse, or equivalent to what he worked with in SD?
I look at it this way. Without a QB like Rivers, our upside is probably 9-7 and even that's a stretch. I don't think anyone we draft at #6 is going to change that significantly.
With Rivers, I think our upside is deep into the playoffs. Even without Beasley or whomever, we are still a top-10 defense. But even if we draft Cooper or White, we're still a bottom-10 offense. On the other hand, if we get Rivers, we move to above-average immediately (IMO). That's above average on offense and defense. Which is what playoff teams are usually made of.
So...I give them #6 (and maybe more) for Rivers and I don't look back.
