From Rich Cimini's sunday notes.

6. What a scout says about Simon: Nose tackle Deon Simon hasn't generated much buzz because ... well, he's a seventh-round pick, but I talked to an NFC scout who called Simon "a steal" for the Jets. He's a sleeper out of Northwestern State (Louisiana), a 6-foot-4, 332-pound mountain with some athleticism. The knock on Simon is that he's "not a real ferocious kid," according to the scout, but he demonstrates a willingness to improve as a player. It's always a crapshoot in the late rounds, but you have a chance if the player has some skill and a desire to get better.

I know you didn't say it in that post, but you've been railing against this pick since we made it and you've said elsewhere that we should have taken a OT, or maybe I'm mistaken about that, if I am I apologize.

No problem, Ham... And I will freely admit you know a lot more about the draft than I do. You are a drantnik in my estimation. But you can't be telling me there weren't other, more pressing needs than another Dlineman, can you?

The 7th round is where you pick up a FB, punter, kicker, and those are greater NEEDS IMO that could still provide good value.

We have 2 FB, both of which probably don't make team..we have a kicker..and any punter worth mnore than a free agent tryout was taken by then

plus in general it seems..later round DL, especially inerior DL, make a lot more teams than FB or Punters...

Drafting La'el Collins would have been nothing more than issuing him a license to enter the 2016 draft.
He was never going to sign a late-round draft pick contract - he and his agent publicly declared as much.
Using a late round pick on him was no different than simply tossing the selection into a waste receptacle instead of taking it up to the podium to announce.

If a GM wanted Collins, he had to spend at least a 3rd round pick on him, which is EXACTLY what HYATT™ did in his real-time draft this year.
Bold moves like that are what make HYATT™ a bona fide armchair GM and not some wannabe hack.
Right now La'el Collins would be a Green Bay Packers OT, (or a Jets OT, if it came to that, because HYATT™ would have made the same choice in either case), and NOT a Dallas Cowflopper.

HYATT™ 2015 draft
Rd 1-#30: OLB Eli Harold - (eventually taken by SFO @ #79)
(A publicly undisclosed injury, that apparently only GMs knew about, appears to be the reason why Harold slipped so far in the draft.)
Clarence's Pick: FS/CB Damarious Randall

Rd 2-#62: WR Jalen Strong - (eventually taken by HOU @ #70)
Clarence's Pick: CB Quinten Rollins

Rd 3-#94: OT La'el Collins (BPA) - (eventually UDFA)
Clarence's Pick: WR Ty Montgomery (Montgomery has been a terrible name in past Packers drafts.)

Rd 4-#129: OLB Davis Tull - (eventually taken by NOS @ #148)
Clarence's Pick: OLB Jake Ryan

Dartboard Rounds
Rd 5-#147: TE Jesse James - (eventually taken by PIT @ #160)
Clarence's Pick: QB Brent Hundley

Rd 6-#206: RB Corey Grant - (Grant has been a good name at RB for the Packers previously.) (UDFA, eventually signed by JAX)
Clarence's Pick: FB Aaron Ripkowski

Rd 6-#210: QB Brandon Bridge - South Alabama (UDFA, eventually signed by DAL)
Clarence's Pick: DE Christian Ringo

Rd 6-#213 DE Bobby Richardson - Indiana (UDFA, eventually signed by NOS)
Clarence's Pick: TE Kennard Backman

Snacks went un-drafted for the same reasons and we wisely scooped him up, small school and multiple knee surgeries.

(To be clear: Multiple knee surgeries for Snacks, not Simon)

This kid has legit NT size and strength and its worth a shot with a 7. Like I said, we lost Ellis this year and might lose Snacks next year. We can't pay Snacks with all the money we need to pay Mo, Sheldon and Williams.

Simon total blew out his knee in high school, and missed a good portion of 2014 season due to knee injury. The Jets drafted him in the seventh round , so that is exactly the time to take a chance on a talented Dt with some serious injury concerns.
