Positive report on Mims

That the Jets haven't added a veteran wide receiver is a little surprising. They re-signed Braxton Berrios, but lost Jamison Crowder in free agency, which means their current depth chart is thinner than last season.

Should we perceive this as a vote of confidence for Denzel Mims?

The Jets' coaches are getting good reports on Mims, who cut his body fat to 8% this offseason, but it's premature to group him with Berrios, Moore and Corey Davis as roster locks. They probably will add at least one more receiver, either a high draft pick or a veteran via trade. Even if that happens, Mims figures to get one last shot in training camp to prove himself to this coaching staff, which puts a premium on route running -- not one of his strengths.

like almost all jet fans I was thrilled we landed mims in the 2nd but i've been completley off his bandwagon for the longest.. hell, i even suprised myself with how excited i was to see the photo of him looking to be in great shape because i was absolutely over the kid.. but like tebow already mentioned, this should be his last shot here.. full stop.. it would be impressive to make the team at this point as a # 5 knowing we're taking a WR early regardless..

There are definitely fans rooting for this guy. I just hope that him getting in shape wasn’t just so they could look to trade him.

My guess is he will still be on the team after the draft and I hope he balls out at mini-camp!

You mean running go routes at Baylor isn’t enough to succeed in the NFL?

I don’t usually blame JD for much but this draft pick is potentially on the same path as Devin Smith. Another 2nd round swing and a miss. The scouting report warned of this but we gambled anyway. It’s not looking good.

This offense requires route running skills. Denzel Mims has an off season to figure it out or he’s gone. Pretty straight forward.

I’m so glad that most of us are not calling the shots for our Jets . Mims maybe gone, but you don’t draft a kid with this much talent and give up on him because of fluke circumstances. He played decent in his rookie year and the offense changed on him his sophomore year. He was supposed to learn a new scheme that involves precision but circumstances screwed up his opportunity for development. Instead of pouting the kid put in the work in the off-season in his own time and sent progress reports to the team . You guys probably because of the messed up history of this team see a potential bust . Me, I see a potential T O. Without the histrionics. I’m behind this kid all the way .

I apologize for the long one!!

1.) first year under Gase and our abysmal strength and conditioning staff... nuff said, right?

2.) second year...we all know the food poisoning, C19, etc, but more than that, LaFleur and Saleh DO NOT play you if you don't know your job. that makes sense, right? not so fast...

keep in mind, this criticism encapsulates both Gase and LaFleur, but for completely different reasons.

had he gone to DALL and played under McCarthy, Mc is going to get a 6'3' 200 lb speedster with good hands on the field in some sort of package created for him that he could digest until he was ready to have that expanded. Same goes for Reid, Harbaugh, and a slew of other HC's/OC's with any sense of what they have at their disposal.

a.) unfortunately for Mims, he gets stuck with Gase... the same Gase who couldn't design a specialized package if we gave him a how to kit, a box, and wrapping paper.

b.) unfortunately for Mims, he moves onto LaFleur... this guy can absolutely get Mims in the game; no question! but he won't, because it limits the overall strength of the WR unit by specializing just #11.

Tyreke and CeeDee aren't Rhodes Scholar's, but touch the ball and they do it a lot. Mims has to shoulder some blame... PLEASE DO NOT THINK I AM OBSOLVING THAT... i am just saying that most receivers get OJT as they try to digest this level. Special considerations were made for the aforementioned WR's, and the softer side of me thinks we should have done more to get Mims' productive in some capacity to allow him the confidence to keep building his repertoire.

I have to disagree. When you’re a 1st time OC implementing your scheme with a rookie QB you can’t afford to create a specific package for a receiver who can’t even practice regularly and isn’t in the best of shape. . Mims found himself in a perfect storm and to his credit he did his best during the season and made the decision that what he displayed wasn’t good enough and immediately did something about it after the season was over..

you aren't disagreeing. i get why he didn't "and" didn't say ML was necessarily wrong. i just said that LaFleur possesses the talent to create that type of package, but wouldn't. that is unlucky for Mims... had he gone elsewhere, mark these, Mims is playing and playing a lot.

ML will change his tune on that in time for the right player in the right situation, and maybe even have a philosophical change of heart.

is your contention lafleur has a personal problem with mims?! if that's what you're saying, wouldn't that also mean salah would have to be complicit in this as well?? & where is douglas on all of this??

no, nothing personal. if you read my original post, you'd see i said:

this is a good thing of sorts, but not particularly for Mims. Mims' job was to learn 4 different WR spots so he could back all of them up before he would receive extended playing time... their rules, their way, all good!!

my original point was that had he landed on a different team, they would have carved a nitch or packages just to get him on the field.
it's done with young WR's all of the time.

😂 I feel bad for Mims lol drafted to play with the puppet master that only liked his hands up the QB's ass, so didn't get any attention to expend his skill set and learn routes. Then here comes Robert Saleh and crew and getting under way to start implementing a new offense the Jets cafeteria's kitchen serves bad salmon which gives Denzel food poisoning so unable to compete, practice or even have the strength after losing twenty plus pounds he is regulated to the strength and conditioning coach to start getting himself back into football shape. This whole time he could of been learning the play book and getting hands on learning from Miles Austin, and LaFleur but he is elsewhere trying to get his weight back to where it needs to be. Whole time fans are bitching about him, awesome fans.

When he does come back, he is thrusted onto the field with no experience or understanding this offense and the roles that each of the receivers are ahead of him that went through preseason and had a grasp of what was expected of him. Two months after food poisoning he gained only eleven pounds back yet he was not complaining and trying to help his team mates and having issues. Kept working though, head down and trying to get stronger while trying to understand his craft and develop.

He catches normal flu out for around ten days immunes system at this point severely compromised as he comes back from being sick he contracts Covid 19 and he is out for 4 weeks. Fans are tossing in the towel on this young man that had Adam Gase year one, then in year two he dealt with Food Poisoning, Flu, then Covid and all of the Jets fans are ready to toss him like a rag doll. So what has he done this off season so far, he has regained not only his football frame but added muscle to his frame sitting now at 226 lbs, with 8% body fat. Hired a chef to cook meals for him, has a wide receiver coach and a physical trainer. His route tree is roughly 75% there and he understand 80% of what is expected of him from LaFleur and this offense thanks to Elijah Moore, DJ Montgomery, Jeff Smith, Braxton Berrios and his QB Zach Wilson. Boy his team mates are helping him out, must have the backing of his team mates but still the fans are ready to move on from him

GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!!!

went back & read your original post skop & i have no problem with lafleur & salah insisting on the WR room knowing the playbook the way they want them to.. that's their call until it's someone else's.. we're drafting a WR early, hell maybe one in the mid rounds as well, mims is fighting for a roster spot..

LOL TELL US HOW YOU REALLY FEEL.

Hey the Kid has had a rough road no doubt. Other teams would have cut bait with him after the Covid stuff or when the new regime came in. Im not saying the Jets have done him a favor but I have to admit I'm impressed with them getting behind Mims and now they hopefully will reap the rewards. A credit to the young man too. He was given a chance to come back and has so far made the most of it. A lot of guys don't or can't. TC will tell the tale and hopefully Mims is a major contributor this year. Always good to see a guy come back to the point were its all up to him and He has a level playing field to compete for a spot on.

@jetgreen13, i don't have an issue with Saleh & LaFleur being certain that Mims had his assignments down before playing him. that's their managerial style, and it's sound.

my only point was that there are HC/OC's that would have had a weapon like him integrated into their offense to get him touches while he was learning the finer points of his craft.

I usually have sympathy for anyone who goes through tough transitions in life, but let me just say this about Denzel Mims: Cry me a River, man.

He was drafted with a high 2nd round pick, which was praised as a steal by fans and media alike. The best ability is availability (someone once said). Mims has lots of reasons for why he’s not out there producing. The excuse train has left the station. He needs to compete for one of the top 3-4 spots at WR or hit the road. Just my take. I’m rooting for him to turn it around but I’ve seen this movie before.

No you haven’t, especially if you’re talking about with the Jets . No player drafted by this team has experience getting food poisoning ( reportedly from eating something served by the team) missed training camp due to a worldwide pandemic and then missed additional time after contracting the sickness as a result of said pandemic.
You are entitled to your opinion but what this kid went through the past year you have never seen before.

this is the reason why he is getting that reprieve by the team but also because last year he did not complain he even tried his hardest to help the team even when the fans were calling for his head.

@BlindsideD'Brick, you should really read up on why Mims didn't receive playing time even after his health was such that he could suit up.

you say he needs to earn one of the top 3 to 4 spots, but the truth is because the other 4 guys ahead of him were able to go thru all of the offseason practices, trainings, and camps vaulting them ahead of Mims, Mims wasn't asked to learn "a" position, but "all" of their positions to be a back-up for each spot before he could hit the field.

that's a momentous task for anyone, let alone a 2nd year receiver from a bubble screen college program.
