I read an article yesterday comparing Smith's 1st and 2nd year stats which showed that he improved in a bunch of different areas like comp %, sacks, interceptions and even QB rating(though it was still bottom of the league). His biggest problem, as we know, is consistency as was demonstrated by his both ends of the spectrum Buff first Q nightmare and perfect finish at Miami. I'm not counting on him to be the starter but I do like that he at least showed improvement to still be in the mix. Looking forward to see how the QB competition looks going into training camp...
Respect the article and your opinions but disagree. We need to move on from trying to turn chicken you know what into chicken salad IMO as far as Smith is concerned.

I heard Greg Butthead say that he thought Smith really improved and then started blubbering about his perfect rating vs Miami in meaningless week 17. Unlike our moron Rex, the Dolphins played a preseason game to improve their draft position

Bring in a stopgap veteran cheap, draft Mariota if he falls to 6 or a Petty, Grayson or similar in a mid round, have that real competition (not a Rex one) and when the stopgap, the rook and Matt Simms ALL easily outplay Smith, send him packing and go with the winning threesome

I don't care about his stats, the guy can't read a defense before the snap, and can't figure out where to throw. No matter how much he improves, playoff caliber teams will fool and embarrass him.

I do not have any high hopes for Smith but I also have no problem with him bring in the mix along with one vet and one drafted QB. He is has a reasonable contract. Lets see what he looks like under Gailey.

Marcus Mariota being tutored by coach the Browns are hiring

As part of the latest collective bargaining agreement, strict limits were placed on the amount of and type of work NFL coaches could do with players in the offseason.

Of course, if they aren’t exactly NFL coaches or NFL players yet, it seems there’s a loophole.

According Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, quarterback prospect Marcus Mariota is working with private quarterback tutor Kevin O’Connell.

O’Connell, who did the same thing for Johnny Manziel a year ago, is going to be hired by the Browns as quarterbacks coach. But that move hasn’t been announced by the team yet, allowing him access to Mariota he might not otherwise have.

Mariota has been working out with O’Connell in San Diego, preparing for next week’s Scouting Combine. Another noted quarterback tutor, George Whitfield, is also there working with Jameis Winston and Bryce Petty.

The Browns have used first-round picks on quarterbacks in two of the last three drafts. But Brandon Weeden’s in Dallas now and Manziel’s in rehab, so the idea that they might want to make a move for Mariota makes some degree of sense, at least in a Browns sort of way.

They currently own the 12th and 19th picks in the NFL Draft, which would give them enough ammunition to move up to the top four or five picks in the order.

The Browns clearly need to upgrade the position in some fashion, whether by free agency or the draft, so the idea that they might be thinking of making a move for Mariota has to be considered.

Although dragging their feet to announce the hiring of his personal tutor might also be the coaching equivalent of text messages from the press box, something that others might take a dim view of, in the interest of competitive balance.

What are people thoughts on Austin Davis from STL as a backup? He had a 65% completion rate

Newest Mock Draft from Mel has the Jets selecting Mariota.

Personally, I would love to see MM fall to #6 and we trade for both Cleveland #1 's this year and maybe a 3rd. Honestly don't know what the trade value is for #6 , but I would love that return. That way we could grab 2 really good players either at CB, OLB, OL or WR and still have a 2nd for QB or BPA at whatever position isn't filled with first two picks. Two 3rds would be nice also for a QB like Grayson and an ILB. I don't think it would such a bad thing to go into 2015 with Fitzpatrick, Smith and Grayson and 3 premium picks spent on other big areas of need.

I can agree with this. I say the Jets don't get Winston obviously but the wild-card is Mariota. If he is still available at #6 what do the Jets do? Whether the Jets draft Mariota or a QB in the 5th-6th round and signs a vet FA, Geno needs to be placed in true competition with all of them and may the best man win. Only thing is drafting Mariota means, the Jets have no faith in Geno anymore IMO. If the Jets draft Mariota I'm cool with it but they better fill all other need positions in free agency (mostly) and the draft. Like signing a big time free agent WR (Dez or Thomas) and CB (Revis or Maxwell) for example.

You can refer to this chart for rough trade values. Teams don't stick to it religiously, but they don't vary too wildly from it either. The #6 pick is worth 1600 points. #12 is worth 1200 and #19 is worth 875, so combined they are worth 475 more points than the #6 alone, and we would have to throw in our 2nd round pick (520 points), which if we were going strictly by the chart would call for them to throw us back a late 4th/early 5th to even things out.

So we would effectively be trading down in the first and up from the 2nd to the middle of the first. Not bad, but it takes two to tango, and if I'm Cleveland (or anyone else interested in Mariota), I'm not trading up to 6, I'm going up to 3 or 4, and that's only if I can't make a deal with Tennessee at #2 (2600 points). BTW, the 3rd pick is 2200 and the 4th is 1800, so Cleveland's sweet spot is right in there somewhere. We don't have the cards to play in that game, 'fraid to say. Despite what the mocks are all saying now, Mariota will not be there at 6, because someone (Philadelphia, Cleveland, St Louis, etc.) will have traded up higher to ensure they get him.

Rex screwed this team one last time when he went for all out in the final game of the season and beat Miami, and don't think for a moment he wasn't thinking about that. Winning that game, and the Tennessee game, knocked us out of any shot at the top two QBs, unless we put together a trade package we can't afford (given our many needs).

It wouldn't be popular among those who want Mariota, but just imagine if Mariota dropped to 6, and we got both of their first round picks. That would be perfect, IMO. We could address other areas of néed in the 1st (and get two good prospects), and then grab a QB in round two or three. I think it would be ideal. But it probably won't happen for various reasons.

The issue I see is that we are the jets. If Mariotta is available at 6 and we pick him, he'll be mediocre at best, if we pass on him, he will be a hall of famer a la Marino and favre.

Bucs release Josh McCown

Mike Glennon may or may not be the quarterback of the future for the Buccaneers, but Josh McCown is definitely the team’s quarterback of the past.

PFT has confirmed multiple reports that the Bucs have released McCown. (The Bucs also have announced the move.)

Last year, McCown signed a two-year, $10 million deal, after putting together some very good performances as the backup to Jay Cutler in Chicago.

McCown, who started 11 games in 2014, immediately becomes a free agent, and he can sign with any other team immediately. It beefs up an otherwise weak class of 2015 free agents, and it could spark a land rush among quarterback-needy teams like the Jets, Browns, and Bills.

Honestly prefer geno over him. He was awful when he started last year. He played well in Chicago but maybe a product of the offense.
