I know they'd save 13M by releasing him as he's owed 16.5M in 2015. But he comes off his rookie deal after this season.

Rumor is they want to get him to sign an incentive based contract closer to $8 mill a deal, give him a 2 year extension, and have if up to $16 mill per year when he hits player's incentives...lowers the cap number and gets him a longer term plan.

That's why I say this could be public grandstanding by the team, Bradford already has that money coming to him this year, so why gamble on himself to stay healthy when the money is coming anyway for 1 year worth of work instead of 2? The team is saying, take a little less for the better of the team and bet on yourself to make the money back in player bonuses...we dont know if Bradford and his agents behind the scenes is saying, just pay me the money you owe and I'll bet on myself getting a new contract next summer.

That's why I said, you cant take what they are saying at face value, because they are in the middle of negotiating a better deal for the club now with bradford.

Good stuff. Thanks for that. Looking bleak for his escape, I'd say. They're working hard to keep him.

Agreed. I think he stays 1 more year on his current deal, bets on himself (unless the incentives are crazy easy to get), and becomes a free agent next year. Depends on how much he loves it there and if he wants to be part of the move to LA? Will be interesting to see how this plays out, but I expect him to let himself become an unrestricted free agent next year.

No way he sees tannehill and dalton getting $100 mill contracts and cant easily see himself on that level if he just stays healthy...(he's easily better than both, IMO)

To me the most realistic and best situation for the Jets next year is Smith, Fitzpatrick and Hundley. I really want to see what Gailey brings to the table as far as working with Geno, with Fitz as a safety net and a long term developmental project in Hundley. That way we can either trade out of #6 or stay there and grab a player that can contribute next year like a WR, OLB or OL. My preference is trading, ideally with Browns for their two #1 's. I think they will be desperate to move on from the Johnny Football debacle and overpay to get Mariota if still there. #s 12 and 19 get us a WR and OL/OLB/CB. May be a pipe dream, but that is my ideal situation.

You're showing the GM in you. I would love for that scenario to take place but could the Browns really move on from him already? I wouldn't blame them. They need to blow up that franchise and start over much like we did.
I can't get behind Hundley in watching tape on him though.

I agree our first two picks should be taken towards a WR and OLB at this point. And in the back of my mind, I would most like to see the rumored deal of Philly making that trade with us to include Foles and likely next year's #1 and possibly this year's #2 which the Jets could easily finagle. In that scenario, if Foles (still on his rookie deal) did not work out, we could still hinge our hopes on next year's draft with 2 firsts. Our minds do wander, don't they?

This is my pick...Foles and the eAGLES #1 ...though the cleveland trade back is my second favorite scenario.

Addressing QB and trading down to the Eagles pick likely grabvs us a WR, CB, OLB, or OL to go with addressing QB. that would be a huge win and hopefully come out of rd 1 with 2 holes plugged.

In the Browns trade back scenario, I still like it because we probably plus two holes, but QB likely isn't one of them making it a "second best option," IMO, but you still plug two young college kids to develo into WR, CB, OL, and/or OLB...still a win.

Coming off the Rex years, we need an infusion of young, fast, athletic talent...

Sounds like both of us are of the opinion that Mariota isn't worth #6 , with his long lead time particularly in this market. Also believe that we need an infusion of young athletic talent, hence the trade down scenarios. I'm not sold on Foles though. I think his stats in '13 were due to Kelly's up tempo offense catching most opponents off guard and in '14 Foles came down to earth before getting injured.

Just curious, why do you guys see CB and OL in the 1st? First of all, let's assume we will sign a FA CB, okay? My question then would be: aren't we young enough at CB? Williams to me looked like a legitimate starter. I thought he performed superb for an UDFA who didn't attend camp. He will get better. Add to the fray Milliner and McDougal returning. Walls held his own. We can't just write them off can we? They will be healthy. And to add another 1st rounder? McDougal was being called baby Revis. Why bury all these guys? Seems very excessive to me.

And at OLine? I guess I'm truly the lone voice here in believing Aboushi can handle LG duties as he did last year. A full camp and reps will only bolster that IMO. The numbers showed he performed there quite well and the line as a whole settled down when he came in. You're talking about a 1st rounder.

Just curious to yall's thoughts.

Yeah, but how many QB's are capable in any system of throwing 26 TD's to 2 picks? And for his career, he's still a 60% completion guy.

Considering the QB landscape, I'd take a chance on that. He's not damaged goods or skittish and still quite young. I don't see many better options. And I agree, Mariota doesn't excite me either.

It just seems that you cannot have enough talent at the CB position nowadays in the NFL, particularly with a coach like Bowles who employs a lot of 5-6 DB looks. I do like their ability and hope that Milliner and McDougle both rebound at 100% this year, but both had serious leg injuries so its not a guarantee. There are a couple of 2nd round CBs who are intriguing, and if we were able to pull off a trade for Browns' 2 #1 's, grabbing a guy like Kevin Johnson from Wake would be a solid move IMHO.

I hear you, and it would allow us to skip picking a QB in the first couple of rounds. If we couldn't do Browns then that would work for me.

I look at the value this way:

I think 2 first rd picks > Mariota
I think Foles and 1 1st rd pick > Mariota

maybe on Foles, but I think a big armed QB like him would benefit from working with Gaily also. He has all the tools and the arm and I think with the right coaching can be solid. Will he be Rodgers, probably not, can he be Joe Flacco? I think so. You can win with Flacco.

Milliner has stayed healthy and had 5 surgeries at bama before coming to the NFL and having 3 more in his first 2 years...8 surgeries the last 6 years is a lot. I dont know how much you can count on him...so I pencil him in as a #2 CB because you cant count on him, which means your #3 better be borderline starter.

You said McDougle was a baby Revis? Lets calm down on that a little...he has been completely out of football 2 years and made 0 plays in practice, not 1 INT. I think catching up to NFL speed after being out of football is going to be hard. maybe he'll be revis (he's much smaller than Revis physically, BTW, about 1-2 inches shorter and much lighter in the ass as they say), but we'd be fools to "count on" a guy who hasn't stepped into a live game in 2 seasons.

So so far, you have 2 guys you can't count on at all to stay healthy, you have to plan like they are trying to make the team essentially...

Then you said Williams, Walls, etc, etc...

So you have 2 guys you cant count on you want to shift your focus on Williams and Walls as all we have?

I think we have to sign a starter...and draft another potential starter...period...

We just watched Sherman, Maxwell, Revis, and Browner in the Super Bowl for a reason...we're not going anywhere with Milliner, McDougle, Williams, and Walls...

I sign Cromartie on the cheap and trade into late rd 2 from rd 1 and draft Rollins CB Miami of Ohio...

Milliner and Cro start, Rollins, Williams, and Walls can battle for nickel back and you groom Rollins for longer term #1 /#2 CB spots.

Thanks for the reply. Let's be clear. I didn't say he was baby Revis. I'm repeating what the coaches said.
So you are basically writing them all off. I'd utilize our 1st on another position. Too many other needs and I can't believe that all 4 will essentially be worthless. We'll disagree and see how the Jets proceed.

From my point of view, this is a 2-year build with a lot of evaluating going on this year for an entirely new regime. In my mind, this gives the Jets time to see who's going to stick starting with Coples but also a lot of attention towards these CB's. If the need rears its head, I think this happens next year. I would be secure in thinking McDougal, Milliner, Williams and Walls can handle one starting CB position and one slot. I understand that Milliner and McDougal were hurt last year but does this mean they certainly will this year as well? I'd hate to bring in another prospect and sit at least two very good prospects out of fear. They're healthy now. You haven't convinced me that a 1st rounder is needed opposite the FA signing but I like the healthy dialogue just the same.

55 - love your plan of signing Cro and drafting Rollins, but I think you will have to invest a mid to late round #1 to get him. There is no way he falls to late round #2 with this year's crop of CBs. Also I don't think drafting another CB equals writing-off McDougle and Milliner. I think it is great insurance for an incredibly important position in today's NFL. As far Walls and Williams, I would be surprised if Walls is a top 4 CB for us next year and Williams did show enough to warrant consideration.

I didnt say wait until rd 2, I said trade into late rd 1, maybe 20-25.

I guess it depends on who we sign at CB...if we sign maxwell or Jackson, you don't "have" to draft a young CB rd 1 or 2...as mart states, I guess you could take one later.

My proposal was Cro and Milliner starting 2015...Cro with a degenerative bad hip and Milliner with a degenerative bad body...so if you have two players with a high probability of injury, you NEED to draft a CB in the first 2 rounds (I would recommend trading up from rd 2 to rd 1 and grabbing a future starting CB in Rollins for "when" Milliner or Cro go out.

As for McDougle, he's not in the discussion because zero people on this board knows what he is...he may not even make the roster if the rust is too bad...

That leaves us Williams and Walls...I think we need another CB to go with those 2, a young CB, one can argue if that should be our rd 2 pick or later, but I think we need one bad enough to trade up from rd 2 and grab a starting caliber CB. Just my thoughts. If you sign maxwell or Jackson, they're young enough to warrant waiting till rd 3 I guess...

To this point, I've seen your arguments on going CB in the first over WR and pass rusher. We'll strongly disagree on that one.

I still haven't seen a compelling case for an OLineman in the 1st. I'm all ears. Cheers.

The OL are a bit of a gamble this year. There are some very intriguing propects who scouts may fall in love with at the combine. One such OL is La-el Collins. He is an absolute beast in the run game, and if he can demonstrate an athleticism that translates to OT and particularly LT then a top 10 pick is not out of the question. The key with any though will be their ability to LT at the next level.

So you think LT is a priority need? DBrick is under guaranteed contract for the next three years (ditto for Giacomini) and I would argue he isn't slipping at all and has remained durable and efficient. Maybe you're one of those who subscribe in taking a top 10 pick and using him at RT? That's not an athletic position as it's your run-heavy side typically filled by larger, less-athletic, far less costly OT's.

I'd have a hard time agreeing this is a major need and warranting a 1st rounder, especially a #6 pick. Just sayin.
