The Jets are hanging on to another one of their own.
Running back Bilal Powell, who was due to become an unrestricted free agent in a few hours, has agreed in principle to a deal that will keep him with the Jets, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. That person spoke to NJ Advance Media on condition of anonymity because a deal cannot be signed until 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Powell, a Jet since being drafted in the 2011 fourth round, was kind of the odd-man out in the Jets' three-headed running back rotation last year, though former head coach Rex Ryan often talked highly of him. With Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory carrying the bulk of the load, Powell rushed just 33 times for 141 yards and one touchdown. He also had 11 catches for 92 yards. The versatile Powell is known for being solid in pass protection. He also has zero lost fumbles on 399 career touches (two kickoff returns, 332 rushes, 65 catches). He's fumbled twice in his career, but the Jets retained possession both times.
Johnson, who was shot in the shoulder over the weekend in a fatal drive-by shooting, will not be back.
The Jets had re-signed inside linebacker David Harris on Friday, before he could hit free agency. They've also tendered nose tackle Damon Harrison and safety Jaiquawn Jarrett, their only two restricted free agents.
