jg13, I don't want to give my input to this situation right now. Have to see what happens Saturday first. Or what happens with Petty's MRI, if he has one.

Horrible coaching. They fed these kids to the dogs. Nobody impressed tonight. Tired of hearing about great drafting as Hack looks like a complete whiff and they think this kid needs to be protected as someone will take him???Not likely. Practice squad material ...wow second rounder.
Looking at the PS stats - I can't believe for a second that we would consider cutting Petty. I get he was playing against mostly 2s or 3s, but to my untrained UK eye... His stats are good!

not exactly sure what bowles did wrong here. it made a ton of sense to let pettty get as much live action as possible in this game. petty hasn't proven anything yet and it's silly to think he's such a given that he needs to be put in bubble wrap in the 4th pre-season game like you do with your starters.
sucks he got hurt. but that's the nature of the game.

IMO the fact that Petty played against back ups, is well out weighted by who he had blocking for him. smith had the likes of Clady, (who got a ton of #2 snaps) Qvale, and Ijalana, one of them will be a starter, both of whom will most likely be in heavy consideration as starters.
Petty was under heavy pressure ALL preseason. Shell as a LT right now is horrible. Shell may develop at some point, but right now he is awful. In 6 passes last night Shell missed blocks on 4 of them, including the one that got Petty hurt. Petty has still played very well. That TD to Anderson last night, it didn't mater who was covering him. Anderson had a 1/2 step, the ball dropped in perfect. Didn't matter if it was Revis covering him. Still a TD. Under heavy pressure no less. Petty was creamed by Shell's man just as he released.
That's what you look for from a young QB in a preseason game. Did he make the right read? Did he panic under pressure?
IMO, with very shaky protection, Petty strongly passed the eye test all pre-season. He looks like he belongs.
I agree there is no way Bowles can cut Petty. smith did not belong being protected last night as a roster lock. he has shown nothing in pre-season.
IMO how this MIGHT turn out, is Devin smith will be IR'ed for the whole season. The emergence of players like Anderson makes him expendable right now. Petty could go on 8 game IR.
Hackenberg needs development. Nobody expected him to come out and set the world on fire. He needs a minimum of a season or two to get up to speed. And not to make excuses here, but the backup o-line almost got him killed. Horrible pass protection from the second unit.
Agree. This game was all about depth players. And the last time I checked, Petty is a depth player.
Petty isn't getting cut... Now the IR is a possibility. I really hope the injury isn't significant and the Jets cut Smith and keep Petty.
I just don't want Smith on the Roster.... If the Petty is injured and it's something a little more serious then I guess he can go on IR and it solves the problem.. The kid is progressing and I do not want to stunt his growth... Hack will need to be red-shirted this year and next year in my opinion.

smith had no business being protected last night as if he had shown something to lock him in as the back up. #2 QB's start the 4th pre-season game.
Last time I checked Petty out played smith all pre-season. smith earned nothing, and should be gone if Petty's injury is minor.
there is no more designating in advance which player returns from the IR. teams can bring back 1 player from the IR, but you don't need to make the call in advance

i don't think smith was being protected. i think the coaches wanted to get petty and hack all the game action work as possible.
i know many fans are ready to move on from geno (myself included). but the coaches may not yet be sold that petty is ready to be the backup if fitz got hurt. their jobs are on the line.
so it made sense to give petty the start and see what he could do with more game experience. he didn't exactly light up the scoreboard last week. now it sucks he got hurt. but it made sense to play him and give him an extended look (at least in theory) last night.
bowles gave petty more snaps than any other QB on the roster with absolutely horrific pass protection.. didn't stop bowles from letting him throw early & often while getting clobbered all preseason.. last night it cost petty..
what's "silly" is thinking petty was going to make the team or get cut based on his performance last night..
what were we/bowles going to learn about petty we already didn't know by continuing to play him only with & against fringe players?? he's already proven he's better then those guys..
where was petty shot to take the backup job from smith?? bowles didn't give petty the shot the kid flat out earned in both training camp & preseason..

maybe bowles wanted to see how petty responded to his mediocre giants game by giving him an extended look last night. i know that for some, by the sake of him not being geno smith, petty earned the backup job. based on what??? putting up nice numbers against washington's 3rd stringers?
so yes, it is silly to think bryce petty deserved to be in bubble wrap last night. the 4th pre-season game is exactly the time you play your inexperienced young QBs to get them reps in real game action (at least real compared to practice or scrimmages).
