QB question for Jets fans ...

Let me ask you guys a question ...

If Mariota and/or Winston were viewed as "elite" QB prospects, would either one of them get past Tennessee with the second pick?

I happen to like Zach Mettenberger, I wanted the Jets to draft him, but would Mettenberger preclude me from drafting, oh say, Andrew Luck when he came out of Stanford?

HELL. NO.

If you agree with that, assuming Tampa takes one of the QB's at #1 as expected, then you must agree that Tennessee will take the other guy at #2 , or we're not talking about a truly elite QB prospect here.

My point is, I think these guys, BOTH OF THEM, are getting pushed up the board due exclusively to their positional value, because teams need franchise QB's in this league and they will naturally over-rank anyone who has a chance, JUST A CHANCE, to be a franchise QB ... if they don't already have one.

IMO thats whats happening here with both QB's who have flaws out the wazoo, and thats why I think it would be a colossal mistake to take either one of them at #6 , cause that will mean passing on a truly elite prospect at WR or edge rusher; Kevin White, Amari Cooper, Dante Fowler, Randy Gregory, Shane Ray, one or more of these guys WILL be on the board for the Jets, at least one or two who are legit elite prospects in any draft and by anyones measure, so if you can't say the same about the QB's, IMO its a mistake to leave these guys on the board and reach for an overrated QB prospect out of desperation. This is the same mistake we made with Mark Sanchez, over-ranked him based on positional value and over-drafted him (4, 5 or 6?) because we were acting out of desperation.

Thoughts?

I hope both are taken before #6 . I'm just not sold on either of them. I would love to get a top WR.

Do you pick Fowler or Ray and try to get a WR in the 2nd or trade up if a Beckham or Strong fall? Is the so called 2nd tier of WR stronger than the 2nd tier of rush LBer's.

jets have to take one of the two best Wrs in this drafts then in the 2nd round draft Petty. he's a perfect fit in Chans offense.

My thoughts are there are more elite QBs to have played the game that where not thought to be elite than those who were. Manning and Luck don't come around often.

Looks like Cooper in this situation.

If the board fell that way, its Amari Cooper or Dante Fowler for me.

I can't say for sure which one I would take. I'd have to study the other stuff you mentioned real carefully before I can make a decision, but if you put a gun to my head and I had to choose right now, I'd probably take Cooper.

I don't love him, but I definitely like him enough to take a shot in the 3rd RD. He's a very accomplished passer, put up huge numbers at Baylor and won a lot of games, so its possible he could turn into a really good starter.

Lets put it this way, I'd much rather take Petty in the 3rd than Winston or Mariota at 6

If either QB is there at 6, we have to take one. But, I wouldn't trade up for either one.
100% agree

If either Jameis or Mariota fall to six, kiss the ground and break an ankle rushing that card to the podium

Don't trade up. If they are both gone, IMO pretty much a sure thing after yesterday in Indy, fill the elite wideout or edge rusher OLB hole, draft Petty or Grayson in the 3rd and have a fair 4 way competition between the FA or waived inexpensive vet pickup, the draftee, Matt Simms and Smith and start the winner of that race, whether it be the vet, the rook or Simms

that is what the draft is though all about value in your organization being winston or mariotta is not a luck then I would expect titans to pass on them because they have metz, but we NEED a QB due to who we have so mariotta and winston should be a higher priority. I still think the eagles will do everything they can to get mariotta i doubt titans will fall all the way to pick 20 unless they were assured another 1st next year from philly.

This draft sure will be interesting I am not sold on the pass rushers looks alot like maybin to me and more a tweener type.

I agree that Mariota is a risky proposition. Winston is going to be big time player, period

I agree... with a caveat.

I believe Winston will go first. If Mariota is there at #6 , and a team such as the Eagles or Browns want to trade up, then we listen. I say send us an equal value package of picks AND a QB (perhaps Foles or Hoyer), then I will make the trade in New York minute.

No takers? Then Mariota becomes a Jet, but no way does he start this year and maybe not even next year.

Your remarks on the 2 Heisman QB's in this year's draft are a breath of fresh air.

i'm intrigued with taking a flyer on petty in the 3rd round as well.. but if gailey, mac & bolwes like the kid don't be cute.. if they believe he'll be off the board by the time they're back on the clock in the 3rd round use a 2nd on him.. what round is to early to pick what you hope will be a 10+ year starting QB??

yeah, a starting QB & a stud WR with our 1st pick would be well on the way to a great draft..
