Quincy Enunwa looking to win third wideout spot

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. –- When the New York Jets made a regime change and replaced former GM John Idzik, Quincy Enunwa could have been staring at a difficult situation.

Enunwa was drafted in the sixth round by Idzik last season and the most noise he made came off the field with a domestic violence charge that was later dismissed.

Spending most of his rookie season on the practice squad, Enunwa could have been looking at having to find a new home when the Jets hired new general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles.

But the Nebraska product looked at the new shift in the Jets organization as a fresh start for himself as well. And fortunately for Enunwa, the new regime was well aware of him.

"I had to prove [myself] again," Enunwa said. "But it was good because everyone is on a level playing field."

"I talked to the GM when he got here and he said he scouted me when I was at Nebraska," Enunwa added. "Whether or not he actually was going to draft me or had any idea, just knowing that was cool. I had the mindset that I was going to impress whoever came [in]."

Entering the pivotal third preseason game this weekend against the New York Giants, Enunwa has made a large leap from practice squad player to the Jets' third wideout. He has seen reps in the slot and is making a case to potentially play there when the season opens.

Not bad for a receiver who has yet to record his first NFL regular-season catch.

Ever since rookie speedster Devin Smith suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in practice early in camp, Enunwa has seen the majority of his reps with the first team alongside Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Enunwa said he has played in the slot and on the outside with the Jets' receiving tandem.
As of now, Bowles said he has not made up his mind over who will be his third wideout. Veteran Jeremy Kerley was thought to be the frontrunner for that spot before camp.

"There's another [position] that's battling," Bowles said of players he still needs to see prove something this weekend. "There are a bunch of them battling for that spot.

"[Enunwa] has been making progress as has all of them. It is tough for the ones that got injured but it is still a battle. I'll see after this game."

Kerley, who played in the slot last season, is recovering from a concussion suffered in the last preseason game. That gives Enunwa another prime opportunity against the Giants. So far, Enunwa has one catch for six yards in the preseason but he has seen the majority of his reps with the first team.
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who worked with new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey in Buffalo, said Gailey likes to take advantage of using personnel mismatches. Perhaps the Jets like Enunwa's size (6-2, 225) alongside the 6-4 Marshall and 6-3 Decker.

On Saturday, Enunwa hopes to make a lasting impression on the coaching staff.

"[It's] going pretty well, had some mistakes here or there," Enunwa said. "I haven't made a lot of big plays but I have been doing my job well and that is one of the things they have noticed out there. It's just me being in the right spot and knowing what I am supposed to do."
"They [management] noticed me last year which is part of the reason why they kept me," he added. "I have been trying to pick up where I left off last year with the work I did behind the scenes."

Whoever wins those last 2-3 WR spots will have earned it. Some fierce competition for those spots

If Enunwa wins the #3 slot makes for an interesting situation with Kerley. You don't pay a Kerely the money he got to be a #4 WR but I guess we do for insurance if Decker or Marshall get injured. But only for this year!!

Don't forget that Devin Smith is in the mix and they liked what he was bringing to the table as a deep threat before his injury.

I watched Enunwa in the first two preseason games and he is by far turning into one of the best blocking WR's on the squad, I believe that alone will help him make the team.

Those of you from the old scout board may remember HYATT™ prognosticating that Q would one day develop into a decent Jets WR, if you were just patient - at the same time he was declaring Rd 4 WR pick, Jalen Saunders, to be nothing more than a long-shot return guy AT BEST, and cannon fodder most likely.
Not all that big on Shaq Evans either.

Enunwa is an exact replica of Jerricho Cotchery. I like his ceiling.

As far as Jeremy, i dont think his role will be diminished. Gailey's offense is predicated on 4-5 WR sets many times. Truth be told, the wide outs that will be on this team will earn their cash.

Decker
Marshall
Enunwa
Kerely
Smith

***Hakim/Powell/Evans/TJ Graham/Owusu this is the real question. Which one of these will make the team.

IMHO, i feel Chan will force his hand to go into a season with 7 WR's. The two i feel that will make it will be Hakim & Owusu. Just for the mere fact that they have dual roles and also play Special teams. Also they have blazing speed to make plays.

Yep, we're gonna need a KR. It'll come down to Hakim, Powell, or TJ Graham. IMO.

Kerley's role sure seems diminished, and unless there is injury he won't see nearly as many targets or even snaps. If he's not the 3rd guy where does he fit when Devin Smith is healthy and playing? I always felt when the Jets upgraded the position it would come at Kerley's expense.

Kerley is under contract through 2018 with partial guaranteed money throughout. He'll be an expensive player to be standing on the sidelines if that's the plan. I'm a little confused by his lack of playing time. I like Kerley.

Not so much money where he couldn't slide down the depth chart. Kerley won't be inactive and he will get catches and some big first downs, but his role has diminished.

If thats the case, Kerely would be an excellent bargaining chip in case the Jets ever want to trade for a young QB next year ala Zach Mettenberger to compete with Bryce Petty.

HYATT™ would.
Kerley has ZERO trade value.
There are UDFAs falling all over themselves for a shot at proving they are just as good as he is at what he does - and many of them ARE.

When Anquan Boldin goes to SF for a 6th a few years back, it makes me think Kerley would probably go for a 14th round pick.

Of course, this would actually happen before the modern draft era when 14th round picks existed.

What's Enunwa got? 1 catch for 6 yards? Think Kerley has 2 for 39.

Strongly disagree. Kerley does have value. He's a sure handed wr with a little wiggle and in his prime. My gut tells me that barring injury to any other wr's -Kerley may be traded after week one when salaries are not guaranteed. He could fetch up to a 4th rounder to some team like Carolina...

I agree with the bolded part of your statement 100%.

The trade him part, not so much. Why would the Jets want to trade a guy Who's " a sure handed wr with a little wiggle and in his prime."?

Kerley's going to be on the team. Their looking for a challenger. Nothing wrong with that.

Kerley's in N E, lot different numbers.

I only say that because to me it's a little weird that Kerley hasn't been running with the ones. If he was a lock to start he would be getting a lot more reps with the first team offense like Decker and Marshall have been. To my eyes the Jets management may feel that they can get similar production from cheaper younger players. Plus they probably want Smith to be the 3rd wideout once his ribs are healed. They certainly don't want to pay Kerley the money he's currently making to be the 4 th receiver. So by connecting the dots that's why I could see him traded. It may also free up resources to sign Mo to a long term deal.
Personally I like Kerley. He's a home grown talent that has shown he can perform at a high level. But if you look objectively at it, he just may be expendable.
