What you say CH is mostly correct. There are two primary types of stenosis, Cervical and Lumbar both of which are frequently the result of a form of osteoarthritis. The neck injury in his case didn't cause the problem but, instead, agrivated the problem. He was likely born with the problem. The same symptoms are often caused by problems such as yours, frequently, the result of becoming an old fart like me. Honest CH, I'm not saying you are an old fart. But the narrowing of that nerve passage is often caused by the aging and drying out, so to speak, of the disk because they lose the fluid that makes them flexible which in turn causes the vertebrae to squeeze together. Therapy will often relieve the problem as will several other treatment methods but those are usually short term fixes. You have experienced the numbness and weakness that comes with that type of condition so you can imagine how difficult it would be to perform as a wide receiver in the NFL with numb or weak fingers or hands. I believe they can get him in shape to get on the field again but it wouldn't take many hits to reaggravate the condition and put him right back on the sidelines and that's probably why the doctors only give him a 50-50 chance of playing again. They are concerned about his long term health.

Right. What I had was the crushed disc. Not from being an old fart (at that time anyway) because I was in my early 30's. Mine was from abuse. Foolish lifting... Mine was also crushed to the point of being shut down so I had no choice but to have surgery or have no use of my tricep. Anyway, what I had doesn't matter. But stenosis as I understand it, does not have to do with a disc being crushed, it is when the canal through the bone closes in around the nerve and starts to shut it down. Sort of like carpal tunnel which I also have. One hand fixed, the other not. Bone is growing in and pushing on the nerve.

I'm not sure what Q's neck injury was/is but I'm thinking that is the problem doctors are worried about. Not the stenosis. For stenosis they pretty much route out the channel and you're back to normal. My buddy has it in his neck. He had surgery and pretty much no restrictions afterward. I had 2 screws, a metal plate and a cadaver bone put in and had to wear a neck brace for 6 weeks. My bone was supposed to grow and attach to the cadaver bone. Last time I had it xrayed, I wasn't getting much growth. I was supposed to go back once more but I never did. Wasn't going to change anything. I wasn't about to redo surgery and the doc said it was probably good enough

Rooting out the canal as you put is the treatment for when the bones enlarge but there are other things that cause it too such as thickened ligaments, tumors, herniated disk, further physical injuries. So even if the neck injury and the stenosis are two different problems for him any further injury could wind up aggravating the stenosis problem possibly causing permanent damage, So I'm sure they are taking all that in consideration.

Well, if you're right and my knowledge of stenosis is limited, then he's done, or he should be for his own good. And if he tries to get all the money he can out of the Jets first I can't really blame him. Just like they will cut him to save the injury money. Shitty but that's how this works works.
My doctor told me that because my wife works , I should be good or to find a different job. Ha! I've never done anything but construction since I was a kid. Hard to change from that. So I switched to mostly doing plaster which lead to the carpal tunnel and a shoulder that is on the way out so now I just work through whatever happens. One of the guys I work with who is older and has the same issues just says, " you'd be surprised at how much pain you can work through ". Of course he hasn't had any surgeries yet. Too expensive. Thankfully for me, my wife has great insurance

My knowledge of stenosis comes from my experience with it when I worked as an LPN in a county nursing home. I had two patients on my ward who succumbed to the more serious outcomes possible. One had the lumbar version and wound up paralyzed from the waist down. I loaded him into a wheel chair every morning so he could be moved around to face his world. His arms were too weak to even move the chair. His room mate suffered from the cervical version and had lost the use of one arm. Their doctors tried to impart some knowledge of the disease so that I could better understand the ailment and care for their patients. That was many, many years ago and our knowledge of the disease probably hasn't changed much however the treatments may have improved a great deal since then and I wouldn't have up to date knowledge of that. In light of this I would, if I were asked by him, suggest that he find another occupation which wouldn't subject him to injury that could make his stenosis a more serious life complication and I would also recommend to you my on line friend follow your doctors advice because a herniated disc could put you in the same boat as that is one of the known causes of that sneaky disease. Many people have the disease and don't even know it until they have an accident or injury especially in people over 50. So, in closing CH take care of yourself. AND lastly, I know I tend to ramble, I have doubts that the team doctors will clear him to play.

If Enunwa is smart, he won't be listening to anything the team DRs have to say and will be seeing his own DRs who have no relationship with the team. Especially with the events that transpired this off season.
If I remember correctly, his issue in 2017 was bulging discs in his neck that required surgery and the injury happened in 2015, but team DRs cleared him to play in 15,16,and 17 in spite of the disk injury and constant pain , before it got too severe and he couldn't get up off the turf after diving for a ball in camp.

Yeah. I know. When I had my surgery, I was scared to death of being paralyzed. Like screwed in the head acared. When I told my doctor my worry, he said to me, That Doesn't Happen. He was so confident in what he does so I guess that was good. At the time, my wife was a nurse practitioner in the ICU. Since then she has gotten her DNP and is now Director of Quality ( Just tooting her horn cause I'm proud of her) so I didn't have to worry o r know what was happening as much because she knew. I'm fact, once I accepted that I needed the surgery, I didn't want to know anything about what would be done. I just wanted it over with. I didn't find out about the screws, plate, and cadaver bone until a post up visit when I saw the xray

I can't change jobs really, because this is all I know, but I do try not to over do things like I used to. I'm hoping God's plan for me doesn't include any more surgeries.

If Tonys right and he was playing with bulging discs then that is scarey. That's not going to get better, only worse. I understand Q wanting to play again because it's kind of like me still doing what I do, the big difference however, is that Q is a millionaire and I make shit

Tony is correct and that's the problem. He's high risk for more serious, life altering problems, if he continues playing. The next hit he takes could put him permanently in a wheel chair. Tony is also right that he should not just accept the team doctors opinions just because he wants to play. He needs to trust the doctor that has his best interest in mind, his own doctor. He loves football so I can understand his desire to get back on the field but maybe he should consider doing that in a coaching capacity or something like that. Maybe the treatment solutions are much better these days and there is no longer any risk associated with the disease once he heals from the surgery. I don't know. Like I said, I've been away from it for awhile but I haven't heard of any such procedures. He needs to be smart and consider his future.
