The NFL on Monday suspended Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa for four games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

According to a person familiar with the situation, Enunwa's suspension stems from his August 2014 arrest on a domestic violence simple assault charge that was dismissed two months later in Florham Park municipal court. That person spoke to NJ Advance Media on condition of anonymity.

Enunwa's suspension begins immediately. He will not be eligible to return to the Jets' active roster until Friday, Nov. 13, the day after their Week 10 game at home against the Bills.

In a statement, the Jets said, "We support and respect the NFL's decision to suspend Quincy Enunwa. The New York Jets share the NFL's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging others to speak out and seek help."

Last year, in the wake of its mishandling of the Ray Rice case, the NFL established a protocol that mandates a six-game suspension for a first offense related to domestic violence. That protocol falls under the league's personal conduct policy. ESPN's Jane McManus, citing a source, reported that Enunwa's cooperation and remorse were factors in having the suspension reduced from six games to four. McManus also reported that the four games was a negotiated settlement between the league and the players' union, which means there will be no appeal.

Enunwa is a 2014 sixth-round draft pick who made the 53-man roster this year after spending last season on the practice squad. He has eight catches for 94 yards this season. Both totals are third-most among Jets receivers.

Enunwa was arrested on Aug. 31, 2014, after an incident with his then-girlfriend at the Wyndham Hamilton Park Hotel near the Jets' practice facility in Florham Park. According to court documents, Enunwa "knowingly and recklessly" caused "bodily injury to another, specifically by grabbing the victim by her ankle and pulling her off a bed and causing her to strike and injure both her head and finger."

The charge was dropped two months later after the victim decided not to testify against Enunwa.

At the time, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told NJ Advance Media, "We will review available court documents, but do not anticipate there would be a basis for discipline."

Even head coach Todd Bowles on Monday admitted he was "surprised" the league acted to suspend Enunwa now, considering the incident "happened last year." Bowles also said he first learned the league was considering discipline against Enunwa around the time of the Jets' last preseason game in early September.

Bowles said the Jets learned of the actual punishment on Monday.

Hate to say it, I'm a little suspicious of the timing of this whole thing. Clearly the Jets didn't know it was coming down.

So am I Flgreen. With the receivers that were on the roster preseason, why did the league wait to discipline if at all. It's a double standard. Most of the time the league waits til the legal process ends before administering action. This is last summer's infraction.

Clearly a lesson to be learned here.

Tom Brady undoubtedly is caught cheating in the playoffs. Destroys evidence, refuses to co-operate with the NFL in any manor, sues the league, walks away with no suspension.

Enunwa case: the charges are dropped. Found guilty of nothing. NFL spokesman publicly states, no disciplinary action will be taken. Enunwa co-operates with the NFL, and comes away with a 4 game suspension, that can't be appealed.

What's wrong with this picture?

This is strictly the NFL being politically correct as it is "Domestic Violence" month. Total BS and it is probably a payback deal for Sheldon. I would take the deal any day if they let Sheldon play all year and suspend him for a couple early next year.

IMHO, huge blessing in disguise. The team will benefit from his absence and faster players will provide this offense to become more explosive with Owusu, Kerely and Devin Smith seeing more of the field.

He could also appeal.

+1 Agree with Dan. He should not be used as our #3 WR option, his hands don't justify that. Dan mentioned Owusu, Kerley & Devin Smith, I'd like to add Cumberland to the mix.

Last year, after Enunwa's domestic violence charge was dismissed, the NFL said he was unlikely to be disciplined. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...a_has_domestic_violence_charge_dismissed.html

I don't get this.
Its an overreaction to the Ray Rice backlash and the amount of heat the league took over that whole sordid affair. The courts cut this kid loose and dismissed the charges, so four games is way too draconian, its absurd, he should absolutely appeal and the NFLPA better fight as hard for him as they did for their Golden Boy, Tom Brady.

If he doesn't at least get this knocked down to two games, its ridiculously unfair.

Source: Quincy Enunwa's 4-game suspension was a negotiated settlement between NFL and NFLPA. As such, there won't be an appeal.
You gotta be kidding me?

If I'm Quincy Enunwa, I'm thinking ... with friends at the NFLPA, who needs enemies?

I think Cuberlamd is better, and if he's not, it's not much of a drop off

Every disciplinary action taken by the NFL seems arbitrary and inconsistent.

Why did Enunwa agree to this negotiation? NFLPA offered him up as a sacrificial scapegoat.

The NFL under Goodell is a mess. I do not believe that he personally is responsible for the growth of the NFL, all of that would have happened under someone else.

This smells.

Got to agree.

Don't understand it. They have this monster cash cow, that they seem intent on beating to death with greed, and PC motivated decisions.

I don't think we should be looking to employers to make judgments about what constitutes domestic abuse and whether someone is guilty of a crime and should be punished. The NFL is not equipped in any way to make these judgments, and it shows in their entirely arbitrary process and even more arbitrary results. Having consistent outcomes and not having arbitrary applications of rules that vary from person to person is the very purpose of the legal system and without the protections built in for defendants, you would wind up with exactly what you have here. Fake rules that are used to give any given decision the veneer of legitimacy. But they aren't really rules because they apply differently to different people.

The NFL gets to decide what is and what isn't acceptable behavior for its players, and is empowered by the collective bargaining agreement to punish players from 31 of the 32 teams in they league when they stray from what they league considers acceptable.

In my estimation, any man that lays a hand on a woman deserves far more than a simple 4 game suspension. Enunwa sucks anyway, he has hands of stone. Cut him and move on.

It's called "fixing games".
DUH !!!
Are you still one of the last believers in fair NFL games, without NFL sanctioned fixing?
NE obviously is pissing themselves over the idea of facing the Jets defense and improved offense, so they rang up "Commish in the pocket" Evil-EL and asked for another favor.

Ain't gunna make a lick of difference, Bradybich is still on the ambulance reserve call list for the next NJJ v NEP game.
