QB Ken Stabler, Joe Namath's backup at Alabama, a star for the Raiders and, speaking of injustice NOT an NFL HOFer for some unearthly reason died today at age 69 of complications related to colon cancer
Sad news. Those were some great Raider teams -- Stabler was one of those guys that you loved to hate back in the 70s.

Very sad news. The first NFL game I recall watching was a playoff game between the Raiders vs. the Fins, I think the year following the Fins' 2nd SB win. Last play of the game Stabler was being tackled and going down when he flicked the winning TD into the endzone. Soon after that the "in the grasp" rule came into effect and announcers were fond of pointing out the TD would not have counted if the rule had been in effect then. Sure glad that rule is no more.

Ice water ran threw that man's veins. One of the best to ever play. The timing routes his receivers ran back then (70's) were great with Stabler at QB. I feel bad tonight...I always liked him. Threw a beautiful pass. Had a style all his own.
I'm from his home town (Foley, AL) and had the pleasure to meet him 3-4 times. Just the nicest person you'd ever want to meet. Very soft spoken. He was pretty much the embodiment of the "lovable rogue" character.
His family put out a statement that he passed peacefully listening to his favorite songs including "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd which is not a bad way to go out if you grew up in what was then a little town in the middle of nowhere rural south Alabama.

I loved Kenny Stabler growing up! Being a fellow lefty, it was cool watching him throw just like me! If you get a chance read "Snake" it's an entertaining read.

Why has Stabler not been selected and inducted into Canton???
Deserves to be there ahead of a bunch of those inducted since the Snake became eligible

The man was part of so many huge plays and great teams. He belongs in the Hall -- here are a few of his career defining plays - when 4 of your plays have names attached to them, you must have done something right in your career. RIP Snake.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't the Snake turn into a pretty good Drag racer after his NFL career ? He liked living on the edge no doubt.
