#74, DT Larry Faulk

With the 188th pick in the 1976 NFL draft, the NY Jets selected a quiet difference maker who will be forever revered in Jets lore.

Born February 12, 1953 in New Brockton, Alabama. Larry attended Kent State where he was named to the ALL-MAC Team in 1973 and 1974. In 1975 Larry was named team captain.

In 1977, Larry changed his name to Abdul Salaam to help find serenity in his life. That name translates to “Soldier of Peace”. Abdul retired a Jet after the 1983 season. He ended up with only 2.5 sacks during his career, but he was a major factor in the Jets evolution and success of the Sack Exchange. Abdul constantly absorbed double and sometimes triple team blocking schemes, which paved the way for his fellow defensive lineman to get to the quarterback at a record setting rate.

Abdul Salaam was an impact player. He didn't have gaudy #s or pro bowl appearances, but he was part of the face of our Jets franchise for 8 seasons.

I remember Abdul Salaam of the Sack Exchange! However did not realize he was drafted Larry Faulk in the 1976 draft. This is the first time I have heard about his name change. Probably just forgot lol. Interesting. Back in those days of course some famous athletes changed their names, Ali and Kareem. He did his job, was always there! #74

I was working undercover at Roosevelt Field one year and I ran into Larry Faulk/ Abdul Salaam. He was shopping with his family and every moment that I saw him he was doing some isometric exercises. I started to talk to him and he said he strongly believed in isometrics to supplement weightlifting. The guy was using isometrics on his fingers in the store while waiting for his family.
