FROM JOE CAPROSO from TURN ON JETS 12 Pack
2. Without over complicating the Percy Harvin situation: The Jets lack talent. Harvin is very talented. The Jets have enough space to pay him on his current contract without it hurting them short or long term. Is Harvin a 10 million dollar receiver? On a league wide comparison, absolutely not. Can the talent starved, excessively cap rich Jets comfortably get away with paying him 10 million next year? Absolutely. They also aren’t going to get a comparable talent in the fourth round and may end up with more overall picks if they trade back at some point anyway.
What Caproso is missing is this: While it is true the Jets can afford to take on another year of Harvin at 10 million, and Harvin is almost assuredly going to be a better player than what we could find in the 4th round of the draft, the real question is what happens AFTER next season???
We won't continue to pay Harvin 10+ million year after year. So essentially we are talking about renting Harvin for one more season, no? What good is that? Are we a super bowl contender next year? And, most importantly, whoever we could select in round 4 would be with the organization for the next 5+ years, not just one. So what is more important? Harvin for one more year of non super bowl contention or the player in the 4th round that could be one of the pieces of the puzzle for many years to come?
And lastly, we haven't even identified the money issue. So we could take the money for Harvin and give it to someone like Orlando Franklin, who again will sign a long term deal with us and commit to being part of our future. In the end, I will take a 10 million dollar valued FA signed long term, and a 4th round pick who will grow with this franchise, over one more year of renting Percy Harvin.
