Report: Jets Interested In Signing Veteran Quarterback Matt Schaub

March 30, 2015 2:52 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Might there be a three-man — or even four-man — competition in training camp?

Geno Smith is the Jets’ No. 1 quarterback at the moment, head coach Todd Bowles said last week. But if he struggles, veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick — who was traded to New York earlier this month — will be waiting in the wings to take over.

And on Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Jets have some level of interest in signing 33-year-old quarterback Matt Schaub.

Schaub backed up rookie Derek Carr in Oakland this past season and was released on March 16. A two-time Pro Bowler and former NFL passing yards leader, the Virginia product appeared in 11 games in 2014 but attempted just 10 passes. He completed five of them for 57 yards, throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns and fumbling three times.

And then, of course, there’s the upcoming draft. The Jets have the sixth overall pick, and many experts predict that they will select reigning Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.
But it’s very conceivable that Mariota will be off the board when the Jets are on the clock.
Matt Simms is the other quarterback on the roster, and Michael Vick is an unrestricted free agent. He’s expected to sign elsewhere

I think Fitz may be better than Schaub but who knows after this latest injury. Both are over the hill and if they beat out Geno then Geno is much worse than I ever thought.

Get them all in camp and let it sort itself out, seems like the strategy, plus we will have all the backup qbs when another team needs one.

i think their are legitimate questions with fitz coming back from a broken leg...........will he have the arm strength again to push off his legs? will his legs be able to take a full season worth of hits. Will he worry about getting hit and not be as accurate in the past I feel these are all legitimate questions we have to have at this point.

Has another QB came back from a broken leg like this before?

Didn't a broken leg end theismans career?

Mac has seen both of them play in Houston. Hope he knows something the rest of the league doesn't know

To me it sounds like Bowles would rather have a Veteran leading this team than a project in Geno (or Mariota).

Schaub is just another QB turnover machine added to our stable. We don't need another.

I think MacBowles takes Mariota in a NY minute and lets him learn and develop for 2015 behind Fitzpatrick

this would be the best scenario let mariotta learn from fitz until 2016 then take over 2017.

Uggh! That is one horrific career ending injury I will never forget when it was shown in slow motion replay on MNF. I still remember almost barfing and then viewing live shots of a visibly upset Lawrence Taylor grimacing over what he saw as the result of his hit. Forget Theisman I think he had to be in total shock...

Medical treatment and rehab are far more advanced today on football injuries then they were back in the mid 80's though you do bring up a good points on the unknowns of Fitz being fully ready and able to play.

Not only that, but the break that Theisman had was devastating. The bone was actually broken in half, and protruding through his skin. he was lucky he didn't lose his leg.

From what I've read Fitz's fracture wasn't all that horrible, and he should recover 100% in very short order. Of course there is still the matter of rehabbing the muscles that haven't been used in several months.

Still IMO this is a very odd move to bring two vets in, at fair amounts of money. I believe I read Fitz makes 3.5. Schaub is a FA, and will probably want more. I'm pretty sure both of these guy's want to start.

From what I've read there are two other teams interested. Oakland who has had all kinds of opportunities to sign him, but he wants to start, and he knows they are in with Carr. The Ravens, If he wants to start wouldn't be the place to go.

If this story is true, and the Jets are interested in signing him, they will have to promise him, the same thing they promised Fitz, he has a legit chance to start over Smith, and Fitz, who won't be able to practice until camp.

This will really be a fun debate on what the fate of Smith is going to be if the signing happens.

I'm probably going to have to wait till it happens to start speculating.

I'm old enough to remember several modern historic moments in US history: Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, the birth of MTV, Apple Computers... And the Joe Theisman injury on MNF. I still cannot believe how many times they showed it, while saying "you might wanna turn away if you've got a weak stomach". Really?

It's like saying "there's an awful train wreck to your right, but don't look!

I suffered the same injury as Joe Theismann just a few months before he suffered his. I was actually sitting there in a leg cast watching the game when it happened. Only difference with mine was the bone did not break the skin. It was snapped in half (tibia and fibula), a very jagged break, and you could see it pushing up against the skin, but the skin never broke. Looked like I had two knees on the same leg bending in the same direction.

Surprisingly, it wasn't that painful when it happened. I think I was in shock. I knew I was messed up, but I laid there joking with my coach and teammates about how I didn't think I'd be able to play that weekend.

But, when the ambulance came and they had to straighten it out, things got real. Holy crap...never felt so much pain.

Thank God we had a good orthopedic surgeon in the area. And, thank God I was unconscious while they manipulated the boned back into place and reset them.

Nine months in a cast and then six months rehab just to walk normally...was never really able to play competitive sports again.
