Report: Ryan Fitzpatrick would rather not play than accept current Jets offer

Just another reason why I believe this is a lost season, bad drafting, cash strapped, insufficient player replacement, and old roster just got a year older, NO improvements on offense whatsoever, and likely Geno starting. Hell, even if Fitz is to sign with the Jets? I believe because he had not been a member of the team for so long that he's simply not ready to play even close to how well he played last season. This is destined for a 6-10 record and a top ten pick.

We should just forfeit our games now and save everyone the trouble. It's all over - May 2nd, 2016.

Bryce Petty - QB - Jets
Jets GM Mike Maccagnan didn't mention second-year QB Bryce Petty when discussing the team's quarterback plans for 2016.
"Hopefully if we can re-sign Ryan (Fitzpatrick) and we have Geno (Smith), kind of go from there and see how we do," Maccagnan said. He also wouldn't rule out playing rookie Christian Hackenberg this season. If the Jets get Fitzpatrick back in the fold, and keep Smith, then that leaves no room for Petty, whom the Jets used the No. 103 overall pick on just last year.

I'm not surprised he didn't mention Petty for 2016 -- all we heard was he would be a 2-3 year project, so if he was ready by September it would be a shocker all around. Having said that, I WOULD be surprised if they gave up on him already, especially if Fitz comes back.

For now I'll take his open stance on the rookie as a promising sign and let everything else fall into place . . .

If Fitz comes back and we keep Geno, how do we keep Petty? We're not cutting our second round pick...

think that was selective editing above to make it look like macc didn't mention petty.

while i didn't listen to the interview or podcast, here is a snippet from macc's espn radio interview yesterday

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan on the QB situation: They still want to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick (where have we heard that before?), they're "excited" to see Geno Smith, they like Bryce Petty "quite a bit" and, "in a perfect world," they won't have to rush Christian Hackenberg into the lineup as a rookie. Hey folks half of me could agree with this post & he could be right. What I don't like is our timing on this team. I feel as of today .....AGAIN today.....that we are not ready for this year & we should have lost a little more age on our team this year. But this could change tomorrow. Also, Big mac could hit HR's with these picks but he is rolling the dice. Do we have a QB only thing I know is we have GENO

But that can't all be true - he knows they can't keep 4, so between Fitz, Geno and Petty he can only have 2. So if he wants to re-sign Fitz, he either isn't excited to see Geno or he doesn't like Petty much.
Fitz signs, I promise you Geno will be cut
I tend to agree, but a guy with his experience at his price (no meaningful difference between Geno and Petty, dollar-wise) is hard to let go in favor of a guy not ready to hit the field this year (if that's how they feel about Petty). Especially if you think Hackenberg might be ready sooner - which, based on Macc's comment today re: Hackenberg possibly being ready at some point this year, seems to be their thinking now.

In other words, if you COULD keep 4, and in that scenario Geno would start the season as QB2, you've got to think long and hard before letting him go in favor of a guy who may never be ready to start an NFL game, and who is perceived as being behind your rookie draft pick.

If Fitz signs, don't be so sure they cut Geno Smith unless they are convinced Petty can be the backup. They would cut Smith to save 1.4MM they could use for Fitz. But if they don't think Petty can cut it, they'll move Petty to the practice squad unless someone claims him.

i don't disagree that they likely can't keep all 4. and obviously macc isn't gonna tip his hand and say if fitz sign, we will do X (cut geno, cut petty, try to get petty on practice squad, etc...)

i was just saying that the snippet previously posted about him not mentioning petty was probably inaccurate since he elsewhere said they like petty quite a lot. it's just a problem of trying to interpret news given by snippets of a larger interview

Oh, I think I read it out of context... Anyway, I don't think theres any chance Petty makes it to the PS before the season - he doesn't even have to go to another teams active roster at that point, right?

hypothetically, if the jets wanted to get petty (or any practice squad eligible player) to the practice squad, they would have to waive the player. IF the player is claimed by another team, he must be put on the active roster (not necessarily gameday roster, but the 53 man roster). IF no team claims him, petty could sign on the jets practice squad, or really, any team's practice squad he wishes. he's basically a free agent at that time

I looked into that a while ago and I think before the season, they have to cut him, and another team can sign him and put him on the PS. Looking for that info now...

well yes and no. only a team that will put him on the roster can claim him on waivers. if no one claims him, petty (or any player) is free to sign with whatever teams' practice squad they wish to sign. one would think it would make sense to stick with the team you worked with last year, but then again, a player could be pissed for being waived and chose to sign elsewhere.

but unless there was a rule change i am not aware of, another team can't claim him off waivers and put him on the practice squad. but if he clears waivers, any team can put them on their practice squad, but the player gets to chose which team he would sign with (of those offering a p.s. spot)
