Ian Rapoport indicates former Raiders head coach and current ESPN analyst Jon Gruden will likely return to the organization.

The Daily News has learned that Jon Gruden is expected to be interested in hiring offensive coordinator John Morton if/when he gets the Oakland Raiders job.

Morton worked in the Raiders organization during Gruden’s first stint with the team.

What does this mean?

To be honest, this is probably much ado about nothing.

It is good for Morton for a report like this to come out. It sounds like he is in demand now. A report like this doesn’t necessarily mean the interest is real. Remember a while back when Mehta reported the University of Tennessee had interest in Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers? As it turned out, Tennessee could not give the job away. They were turned down by nine candidates. After being turned down by their A-list, B-list, and C-list candidates, Rodgers did not get so much as a single interview. It didn’t hurt his reputation for some random report to make it sound like he was in demand, though.

In reality, it doesn’t matter if the Raiders are interested. The Jets have Morton under contract and can block any such move. If the Jets want Morton to stay, there is nothing the Raiders can do about it.

If the Jets ever allowed Morton to leave, they clearly don’t think much of him or his ability to develop a young quarterback.

Morton would also have to want to leave, and early indications are the job might be a step back in one sense. You might have noticed in the Rapoport tweet he indicates Gruden is planning on calling his own plays. Morton gets to call plays with the Jets. So he’d essentially be taking a demotion.

Maybe things have turned toxic behind the scenes for Morton and the Jets. That’s about the only way he will be leaving.

Neither do we. Look at the results so far with Petty and Hack.

If Raiders do indeed want John Morton and the Jets are prepared to let him go if he wants too that means they have his heir apparent already in house waiting in the wings...

Josh McCown makes the most sense, yes he doesn't have the experience calling plays, but in reality he has the most experience playing in a multitude of offenses over the course of his career allowing him to create the most elaborate and structured game plan... But finding a quarterback to run it will be tricky...

It would have to be Bates, and not McCown.

How about a 3rd round pick for him .... its a lateral move, so Jets do not have to oblige the Raiders... I would also hire Jack Del Rio as my Defensive Co-ordinator .

John Morton was signed to a 1 year deal ( 2 years but second year is lame duck year) last off season, meaning even tho they will be retained for another annual contract he is free to leave since he is a free agent so to speak...

But if it was a two-year contract in actuality, even if the second year was a "lame duck" year, he would still be under contract, and therefore wouldn't technically be a free agent now.

Is there something about contracts I am missing here? Are coaches not bound to the final year of their deals?

basically Todd Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan were under contract through next season but that lame duck contract isn't guaranteed...

however it plays out, we'll see in the next few days if he stays or goes and if we would be entitled to any compensation if he wants to leave...

The final year isn't guaranteed, meaning the team terminates employment, it does not owe the HC/GM for that final year? I did not know that.

Get Arians in here...STAT. He'll help with developing a young QB.

I don't see it happening, but an interesting thought. Would he come east to work for his protege/friend as an OC? I think he retired because of the stress and physical toll of the job and recent health issues. Not sure he would want to immerse himself in NY's pressure cooker even if it was as an OC.
