Stephen Gostkowski - K - Patriots
ESPN Boston says the Patriots are more likely to use the franchise tag on K Stephen Gostkowski than S Devin McCourty.
Tagging Gostkowski would cost the Patriots roughly $4.5M while McCourty would be closer to $9.5M. Gostkowski has been one of the league's best kickers ever since the Patriots scooped him in the fourth round of the 2006 draft, converting 243-of-280 (86.8 percent) field-goal attempts.

With the above news report, do you think the jets should do what it takes to land McCourty? I think some may say only if the price is right, but the right price for McCourty is likely amongst the top paid safetys...so get ready for $10 mill per or better...but do you do it for a young Antrell Role that can play FS and CB in a pinch?

Sounds like a good opportunity to grab a guy that has the flexibility to play for Bowles. I'd be pretty happy with he and Pryor as our safety tandem.

The thing with the Patriots is they will find a way to keep him, Revis and whoever else that fits their needs.

With so much money on cap. I dont recommend it for all free agents but might as well overspend for someone and hes a nyack guy

It's incredible, but true. Every year, they have no cap space. And every year, they spend a ridiculous amount of money bringing new toys to their team.

I agree I think the Pats find a way to keep him; but if I was Mac, and he was a free agent Day 1...I would talk to Bowles and see what he'd think about throwing a big number at McCourty and seeing if he bites. What if we stole McCourty but it cost us $12-13 mill...would it be worth it? What a perfect match-up for Gronk and Clay, right? Also perfect CF safety.

Good point.

Worst case scenario, you drive up the price for the Pats. I wouldn't mind doing that. Might keep them from making another addition.

He's one of the young safeties that make him worth CB money. He also can slide out to CB with his big frame in certain match-ups vs D Thomas, Dez, B. Marshall, Andre Johnson type Wrs, especially in short yardage/jump ball situations. He brings unique versatility I'd consider him a top FA target worth a big number. Bringing him back to New Jersey would be huge.

And with the Jets, do you play him at safety, where he's had the most success, or do you try to make a corner out of him again?

You are kidding right? He was moved to safety for a reason. Terrible CB especially in man coverage which is what Bowles will run mostly.

Agreed, but that brings up the question of why you would invest that much into the secondary, but not at the biggest position of need. CB is a bigger need than safety, much bigger.

Obviously they would still need to invest in CB. If they only sign one FA it will be a CB. Easily the biggest hole on the team.

It will be very interesting to see who we are meeting with prior to March 10. The early signs of who we might sign are always so excited.

Devin McCourty: It would be bittersweet to leave the Patriots

Safety Devin McCourty had no argument with getting what he called a “player-friendly” franchise tag from the Patriots, but things played out a different way on Monday.

The Patriots opted to use the tag on kicker Stephen Gostkowski instead, a move that McCourty said he didn’t know was coming until the Patriots made it. McCourty said there was “no real information” from the team ahead of time about where they’d go with the tag and correctly surmised that the chances he winds up playing elsewhere are greater in light of the move.

As for that, McCourty said he wants to remain with the Patriots but he knows that the best deal may be coming from somewhere else.

“It would definitely be bittersweet,” McCourty said, via Josina Anderson of ESPN. “You stay somewhere for five years and really make a name for yourself in that place. I’ve gotten a lot of help. I know a lot of people in the area, built great relationships, so it will definitely be bittersweet. But my mom always reminds me that comes with the territory. That’s part of being in the NFL, that change is always coming.”

With the Patriots still working out cornerback Darrelle Revis’s situation for the 2015 season, it seems likely that McCourty is going to be talking to other teams come the weekend. As the top safety hitting the market, there’s a good chance that one of them will make him an offer that leads to bittersweet feelings.

Like I said, I think NE probably has something in the works with McCourty but if not, give him The Godfather offer

The Jets should go all out and sign McCourty. He is a true FS and would allow Pryor to be a box safety, his strength.
