Revis Says Jets are Super Bowl Contenders

FLORHAM PARK — Darrelle Revis has been around the block a few times during his nine NFL seasons. Good teams, bad teams, championship teams. You name it, and the Jets' star cornerback has been a part of it.

And it's those experiences that have Revis believing the Jets can contend for a Super Bowl in 2016.

"Yeah," Revis told NJ Advance Media on Sunday. "We've got a lot of talent. We feel very confident with our team overall. The offense is booming, we've added some extra pieces, we've got Ryan [Fitzpatrick] back. We're very confident in what we have."

For playoff-deprived teams (the Jets last made it in 2010), just qualifying for the postseason is normally enough. But the Jets have higher expectations. Way, way higher. See, they tasted the playoffs in 2015, but never got the entree.

Against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17, the Jets blew a shot to make the playoffs. If they won, they would have qualified. Instead, they lost, 22-17, and were sent home.

The players who took part in that game? Most are back. And therein lies the No. 1 reason Revis believes the Jets can compete: They avoided the roster turnover plaguing other teams.

On offense, just Matt Forte (running back) and Ryan Clady (left tackle) are new. On defense, Steve McLendon (nose tackle) and rookie Jordan Jenkins (outside linebacker) are the lone additions. Erin Henderson (inside linebacker), Lorenzo Mauldin (outside linebacker) and Buster Skrine (cornerback) are technically "new" starters, too, but all three players were on the Jets' roster last year.

"It's very tough having a first-year head coach and just expecting the moon and the stars," Revis said. "It's difficult to bank on that, even though you want to go out and win a Super Bowl your first year. I think guys this year are much more confident because they're more comfortable in the things we're doing on both sides of the ball."

If the Jets want to make a run this year, they are going to have to survive a horrendously difficult September and October. In the Jets' first six games, they play five playoff teams (Bengals, Chiefs, Seahawks, Steelers, Cardinals ). The only team that didn't make the playoffs? The Bills. And the Jets haven't beaten them since 2013, with five straight losses since.

Oh, and four of those first six games are on the road.

If the Jets can make it through that stretch with their heads above the water, Revis believes it'll show the rest of the league what he and his teammates can accomplish.

"It's going to be a test for us, and we all understand that," Revis said. "But we're also confident that we're deserving of the schedule we got. We'll see how it goes.

"We know we have to be sharp coming into those games, and we have to have a sense of urgency in those games to get on those teams fast. We need to keep the momentum out of their hands and in ours."

Ya damn right!!

100% on point. Look up and down our roster and the chemisry we have within our locker room. This team is built like '98 and better.

i'm very happy to hear revis speaking about the sense of urgency the jets will need dealing with the 1st 6 games.. hell, i hope he meant for all 16 regular season games..

i would be ecstatic if this is the message bowles is now sending his team, instead of the no one game is more important than another, stuff.....

It really is staring to look that way... And honestly this team might be better....

On Defense I think the 98 team had better edge rushers but the overall front 7 of this one I give the edge too and 98 I think the CB play is equal (unless revis goes back to revis island like ) but this team has better safeties in Prypr and Ghilchrist as well as better depth...

On Offense...
QB - Equal
OL equal
RB - 2016 over 1998 (better Receiving backs this year)
WR's 2016 over 98 Marshal > Key and Decker > Chrebet (only cause of height in the redzone)
TE - equal (Brady's 98 numbers are worse than Jace's rookie season numbers and I think Jace imporves and makes this an upgrade as well

just on the defensive side alone every unit is better...

safety more experience (2nd year) in TB's system led by Calvin Pryor added addition is hybrid DB Marcus Williams playing both CB & FS...

corner position is still an unknown to this point but we did get younger with more speed so it should be a force this year... Marcus Williams could have another great year if he starts across from Revis... Expect another long shot player to make the roster and become a real force this year (Bryson Keeton)... players likely to be exiting this preseason (Dexter McDougle) & (Dee Milliner regardless the dead loss)... Revis, Skrine, Burris, Williams, Morris and Keeton would be an interesting unit...

linebackers got speed and after an impressive first preseason game first round selection Lee looks like he could have the coaching staff reconsider his playing time percentage in rotation with Erin Henderson... not saying he should start but he showed enough wow to be considered an option... third round selection Jordan Jenkins (Calvin Pace 2.0) looks to be a heady football player with very nice athleticism to steal a starting role... Mauldin is expected to be the other starter but could be splitting time with someone this season if he doesn't make splash in the next two weeks...

even the defensive line got a boost with second year player Leonard Williams showcasing his true ability as an inside rusher... remember he was a defensive tackle in college to lineup with Richardson and Wilkerson they could set a new standard of up front dominance from the front three...

tight end is what it was last year with more experience (H Back role) in Enunwa should be a force this year... Jace Amaro could be on the way out if he doesn't show progression in preseason games two and three... Kellen Davis has a role on this team and is who he is a excellent blocking tight end... With Davis returning the Jets could rid the full back position this year, only reason I say this is because they tried Bohanon at RB the last couple weeks...

running back situation is solid with the share role play of Powell & Forte, but who is the third... Khiry Robinson isn't a lock to make the roster, Dominique Williams looks solid but injury status might hurt his chances... Does the veteran Antoine Smith bring anything to the table or should the team roll the dice with the speedster from North Carolina in Romar Morris... Morris looks like he could develop into a nice all around player, but needs live reps to continue his progression...

quarterback has improved with the drafting in Hackenberg and the emergence of Petty in year two... Geno is Geno, nothing new... Fitzpatrick could be better but like Geno, Fitz is Fitz...

receiving core this year could be the best in team's history... from Decker, Marshall and H Back role Enunwa should be good enough for the Jets to keep three rookies with those veterans... Yes Charone Peake is a steal but so is Jalin Marshall... Robby Anderson even though he didn't bring that catch for a touchdown his athleticism could be enough for the team to want not to lose him from the practice squad... There is no time table for Devin Smith's return even if he is healthy mid season could be shelved until next year...

All in all this team has potential to be a playoff team... Once in the playoffs anything goes, and yes this team has just enough to make a push if they make it to the playoffs...

GMF - The one position group that you don't mention is the OL, and therein lies the key to the season IMHO. The right side of the line is a serious question mark, particularly the RT position. Breno is a liability, and his injury woes magnify my concern. Can Qvale and/or Ijilana replace him if necessary? Winters from some accounts has played well enough to warrant a starting position, but again is he the long term answer? Clady is an upgrade over Brick, but can he stay healthy? This is a year where our backups may have to log some starting time, and do we have the quality depth to avoid a falloff in offensive production? I'm particularly concerned about our depth behind Clady and Mangold, if either go down we are in a lot of trouble. I'm sure that MM will address the OL in next offseason via the draft and FA, but it will not help this year's group. Lots of question marks that cannot be ignored.

the OL is important but it is one position that is the issue is the RT position like you said... If Breno doesn't return, expect Ben Ijalana to take that job as he has been a step ahead of Brent Qvale this off season... Qvale is liked by the coaching staff but when Brick retired the team jumped to get Ijalana back in the fold, so that could say something in how they feel... Then Ijalana started preseason game one, will he start tonight as well?

actually impressed with Brian Winters so far this off season/preseason he has taken his game to another level being that it is his contract year... depth is a concern but I feel they are comfortable with certain players currently in house like rookie Brandon Shell seems to be a lock to make the final cut...

think Jarvis Harrison has underwhelmed to this point and is inline to be cut/practice squad while Dakota Dozier showed some improvements since last year... still wondering how many OL they will carry and has Kyle Friend done enough to replace Wesley Johnson as Nick Mangold's backup... Friend was noted to show his versatility to play guard as well as center, will be interesting if he makes the cut...

my guess after the sure four locks: Ryan Clady, James Carpenter, Nick Mangold & Brian Winters that Ben Ijalana finally gets his chance with Brent Qvale & Brandon Shell breathing down his neck for a chance to replace him... I hope that Friend wiggles his way into the active roster while we still keep Wesley Johnson with Dakota Dozier as backup guards... Just my perspective but believe they could be a solid group all around but a dominate zone blocking unit...
