Rex Ryan’s best coaching seasons might be a few years removed now, but his gift of gab might live on in the NFL in another form.

The New York Daily News reports that the former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach has signed a multi-year deal with ESPN to be a part of “Sunday NFL Countdown.” He appeared as a guest analyst on Super Bowl Sunday — a tryout of sorts? — and likely convinced executives he’ll be able to talk about football.

When reached by Shutdown Corner, an ESPN spokesman said he had no comment on the report.

Ryan became more known for his talking in recent years than his coaching. He was fired by the Bills before the end of his second season there after signing a five-year deal as their coach before the 2015 season with a record in Buffalo of 15-16.P

Although Ryan had some strong successes early in his tenure with the Jets, reaching two AFC championship games, he also missed the playoffs in his final four seasons, failing to surpass the .500 mark in any of them, and was let go after a 4-12 record in 2014.

This is not surprising. CBS and other networks reportedly made a run at Ryan after the Jets fired him and before the Bills made him a whopper of an offer to remain in coaching. Although ESPN reportedly has been working toward shedding talent salaries in the future, adding the straight-shooting Ryan to talk NFL turkey for a show that’s replacing Chris Berman and has sagged a bit in the ratings appears to be a no-brainer — if Ryan is as unfiltered as an analyst as he was as a coach.

It was only a matter of time. Rex is an entertainer, he'll do great as an analyst. I wish he found success as a coach though.

He'll be acting like his two playoff seasons (as great as they were) were a pair of SB victories instead. The bluff and bluster and blowhard behavior will be hard to watch.

One more reason for Jets fans not to watch the Clown College of Bristol, CT (as if there weren't enough already).

I'm sick of ESPN and their political views. BTW, they are not the same as mine. I won't watch any of their shows. I will watch a game, but that is it.

He will be great on TV and for some reason I think if he ever coaches again he will be successful

ESPN's rating have dropped tremendously and people are blaming it for the same reason you are. Their political views. People just want to watch sports. Even though management is aware of this complaint, they are still shoving their views down people's throats

My biggest problem with ESPN is their sickeningly shameless self-promoting. Every event that ESPN covers is the biggest deal in the world, and anything that anyone else has the rights to is irrelevant.

They really do think they're bigger than the sports themselves. The ESPYs, the biggest night in sports? Tell that to Super Bowl Sunday, or the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, or any Game 7 in any sport. Indy 500. Kentucky Derby. PLEASE!

I hope they continue to tank and they can take their useless political views with them.

I'm not crazy about athletes or actors, or anyone in entertainment, getting any publicity for their political views, regardless of their side. I don't care what Angelina Jolie thinks about Trump, or what Curt Schilling thought of Obama.

Seems odd Americans care more about who Tom Brady or Lebron James endorsed than what someone with a Ph.D. in Political Science or International Relations thinks.

Speak for yourself. I loved the very bold, put it all out there attitude. He backed up the bluster also when the GM gave Rex the talent.

I respectfully disagree. He inherited a good team from the prior regime, and ran it into the ground - wrecking a quarterback along the way...

While ESPN is headquartered in Bristol, Ct.I can barely get ESPN radio at my (western) end of the state. We're on the fringe of the New York FM station (the AM station broadcasts in Spanish) and if they have a radio outlet in Eastern or Central Connecticut, the signal isn't beamed this way. Sometimes I can get it in my car. So I really never hear any political talk on the station. As for ESPN TV, I rarely watch anything other than games and haven't noticed any political content at those times. But I did read recently that because of declining audience share, the station is contemplating layoffs, including on-air personalities.

I disagree with you here. I think Rex was a great defensive coach when he had the talents. Yes, the team had talent but they played like crap under Mangini. He was a solid coach but had huge flaws. He also had a lot of say in personnel matters which he shouldn't of had. Some of his picks were awful, especially Coples. The story on him was that he lacked effort. I think he's out of the league now. They were right.
